Is Apple Full of Sh*t About the iPhone 4 Antenna Issue?

Are you familiar with the iPhone 4 antenna death grip? Basically, when held with the left hand, connecting the two antennas, the signal drops significantly, often cutting off cell signal. It's a big deal as many people reported experiencing this issue, me included.

Someone has been emailing Steve Jobs about this issue, who sent the most moronic email reply of all times:

If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.

Ok, so you're telling me to hold my iPhone a different way, or, to buy one of your cases? Seriously, is that your official statement? Anyways.

Now there are rumors that Apple might come up with a software upgrade to fix this issue. So why did Steve Jobs sent this moronic reply if it can be fixed with a software update?

As Mongstradamus pointed out to me, someone needs to call out Apple on this. Steve's email clearly makes it seem like it's a hardware issue and a software update wouldn't change a thing.

Is it just me being too skeptical? What do you think?

FaceTime: Apple Lets You Try It With Them

If you just got an iPhone 4 and non of your friends did, you probably couldn't try the new FaceTime feature. Apple thought about you and now lets you try FaceTime with a few Apple reps.

Although I had tried FaceTime before, I wanted to give Apple a call and have some FaceTime with a random employee for a few minutes.

This is what you need to do if you want to try FaceTime with an Apple rep:

1. Call 1-888-32238463 from your iPhone

2. An Apple rep will pickup the phone and ask you a few questions about your iPhone setup (FaceTime ON, wifi ON, and caller ID ON)

3. The rep will transfer the call to his iPhone to start FaceTime and will go with you over the few features of FaceTime

The whole experience took about 5 minutes. I FaceTimed with a very fun and friendly girl. I asked her if she had already had some awkward ChatRoulette-style moments today and she confirmed that no one had showed her his penis yet... I guess it's just a matter of time.

FaceTime works great. It takes a few seconds to connect but once you're on, the sound is crystal clear and the video is of a very good quality.

Try it on!

Apple & AT&T May Prevent iPhone Jailbreak With OTA Updates

Ok people, take this one with a huge grain of salt but there is a rumor going around that says Apple and AT&T might be preventing iPhone jailbreaks on iOS 4 via OTA updates sent to your iPhone. Does that sound wacky? If not, read this "tip" that was sent to some unknown blog called Addictive Tips from a so-called Apple insider.

How it works is every 7 to 14 days We (Apple) and AT&T send a message to your iPhone that gathers some data from your iPhone without you knowing and we see what is running, baseband and firmware. We then send a following message. “There are optional updates for your iPhone, Would you like to install them now?” two options “Yes” or “Later”. Those are what would would call “OPTIONAL UPDATES”

Now there are things called “MANDATORY UPDATES”. They tend to work the same way, grab data from the iPhones sends it to AT&T and us then back to your iPhone with the message, “Your iPhone (name of iphone) must be updated to the current AT&T standards to run”, your only option is to “Accept” Now you can try to work your way around it until you get the second mandatory message again “You must plug iPhone into iTunes and update”

If you don’t do this you will then receive no Signal from the network anymore and your iPhone will potentially lock up with no signs of use until you update your iPhone via iTunes. You all agreed to this terms and condition when you installed iTunes 9.2 and then again once you updated to iOS4. With that being Said go ahead Try to unlock the iPhone it will only last 14 days max…

I think it's complete BS from a blog that wants its 5 minutes of fame but I thought it was still worth mentioning on the blog and see what you guys think about that.

But wait, that's not over. There is more controversy contained in this "leak". According to Addictive Tips:

AT&T shipped some iPhone 4 early to verify their OTA update system. Apple stealing user information via FaceTime, which lacks encryption. Some Apple employees who are aware of this situation are not updating to iOS 4.

Does it sound wacky now? Of course it does! If it's true though, Apple and AT&T might have a lot of explaining to do...

What do you think? Do you buy into this?

Apple Says White iPhone 4 Won’t Be Available Until Mid July

Those of you who are waiting for the White iPhone 4 shouldn't hold their breath. Apple just released a short statement in which it says the White iPhone won't be available until mid July.

White models of Apple’s new iPhone 4 have proven more challenging to manufacture than expected, and as a result they will not be available until the second half of July. The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected.

Now why is it harder to make an iPhone in white? I have no idea but it seems to me the color is not the issue here and that Apple is facing other challenges they'd rather not disclose.

At any rates, now you know that if you want a White iPhone 4, you're going to have to wait another month. Is that another "fail" to add to the list of this iPhone 4 launch?

iPhone 4 to Be Delivered One Day Early?

If you pre-ordered your iPhone 4 with Apple and opted for the delivery, you  probably received an  email alerting you that your iPhone will deliver on June 23rd, which is a day ahead of schedule.

The email reads:

Subject: Apple Store - Your iPhone will deliver on June 23rd From: donotreply@apple.com Date: Tue, 22 Jun 2010 00:11:30 -0500

Dear Apple Store Customer,

You recently received a Shipment Notification email from Apple advising you that your iPhone has shipped.

This email is to confirm that your delivery will occur on June 23rd. Although Apple and FedEx tracking information may currently indicate a later date, you can check the FedEx website the morning of the June 23rd to track your package to your doorstep.

In the event that you will not be available to accept delivery on June 23rd, it may be more convenient to use our pre-sign delivery option by visiting our Order Status website at http://www.apple.com/orderstatus.

Sincerely,

The Apple Store Team

So, will our iPhone really arrive on the 23rd? I doubt  it. I think this is just a big mistake from Apple, and someone in Cupertino might have gotten fired for this.

Last year, my UPS tracking showed my 3GS was going to arrive a day early too but the phone eventually got held for an additional day and was finally delivered on the  scheduled date.

Did you get one of these  emails? Do you think your iPhone will arrive on the 23rd?

Apple Cancels Some iPhone 4 Orders

While some iPhone 4 orders are being shipped, others are reportedly being canceled. Apple has indeed sent the following emails to some people who had pre-ordered via the online Apple Store.

Dear Customer,

We were unable to complete the authorization process for your iPhone order. As a result, we had to cancel your iPhone order. To complete the purchase of your iPhone, please visit an Apple Retail Store or an AT&T company-owned retail store.

To locate an Apple Retail Store near you, please visit http://www.apple.com/retail/storelist/.

We apologize for this inconvenience.

Sincerely,

Apple Online Store Team

We're not sure why these orders are being cancelled but the word around town goes that it might be due a to a failure to authorize or people clicking the "submit" button several times.

If your order has been canceled by Apple or AT&T, please let us know in the comments.

iPhone Jailbreak About to Be Legalized?

When you buy an  iPhone, you could expect being able to do whatever you want with it. You may want to jailbreak it to install applications that are not allowed in the App Store. You may also want to unlock it so it is not restricted to only one carrier.

Well, legally you can't do all this because of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which is a law intended to protect digital locks. This law was intended to protect copyrighted music, DVDs, and DRM entertainment products.

When congress passed this law, they were not thinking that it would also legally allow hardware manufacturers like Apple to have a total control over what you can and cannot do with your iPhone. The DMCA clearly wasn't created to prevent you from jailbreaking your iPhone, but it "accidentally" did when Apple started to flag jailbreaking as a violation of this law.

A little over a year ago, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a non-profit digital rights advocacy organization, asked regulators to add jailbreaking to a list of explicit exemptions to the DMCA's anti-circumvention provisions. The US Copyright Office is now supposed to rule any day on whether jailbreaking should be exempted from the DMCA or not.

This is big news because if the exemption was to be approved, Apple would probably lose the huge grip it has on the App Store and what's allowed or not in the Store.

Apple has always argued that it wanted a clean, safe, porn-free App Store. Bottom line is they want to control every aspect of the Store and that is just not right. It should be the users' decision, not Apple's. Only me can decide what's best for me. Only me can decide if I want to take the risk of installing malicious software on my iPhone.

Apple has never sued jailbreakers or even the Dev Team because they know it would be at the very edge of legality. If the US Copyright Office decides to exempt jailbreaking from the DMCA, it will be a big victory for iPhone (and other smartphones) users and digital rights in general.

Let's cross our fingers! In the meantime, you can watch this video to learn more about the DMCA exemption for jailbreaking iPhones.

What do you think about that? Do you think jailbreaking should be made legal?

Steve Jobs A Modern Day Willy Wonka?

After Monday's keynote address by one of the most recognized and charismatic people in the industry, I couldn't help but be in awe of Apple's latest creation. It didn't matter that there was no mention of a Verizon iPhone in the works, or that the screen size was gonna stay at a complacent 3.6".

It was all the magic, the way they presented FaceTime and iMovie for the iPhone with HD recording. It was the fact that 9 years ago, this was done in a tiny lecture hall in front of a handful of people when Steve Jobs introduced the first ipod.

Just to think about the type of evolution that has taken place in consumer electronics, mobile phones and media players in particular is mind blowing. And as much as most people hate to admit it, the juggernaut from Cupertino is responsible for a lot of the industries progress. From the iPod to the iPhone and iPod touch, and now more recently the iPad, Apple seems to pick areas in the market where there's not a a dominant leader, and set a standard.

Full touch screen phones were a joke before Apple came in and set a standard, no stylus, no combing the internet for compatible applications. Same can be said for iPad. The tablet industry was made up of heavy, stylus only machines that took up as much space as a regular laptop, so weren't too practical as a notebook substitute.

If you watched the iPad get introduced, one 'buzz' word Steve Jobs kept mentioning was "magic." This was a magic device that completely revolutionized how you could interact with a computer. And even though the naysayers put in their 2 cents, "where's the webcam, where's the usb port, etc." after selling 2 million iPads in the first 60 days, it's safe to say Apple's got another hit on their hands.

And with a slew of tablets scheduled to hit the market later this year, also running mobile phone operating systems (Android, web os anyone?), once again Apple has set a standard in an area that had no definite leader, not to mention, setting the bar awfully high in terms of design and function.

Not only has Apple been a constant leader in the industry, their products have garnered near celebrity-like attention, especially their unreleased ones. As typical before any large Apple event where Steve Jobs is scheduled to keynote, the gadget blogs and mac-focused web sites were swirling with rumors of possible product announcements.

This year even saw a story unfold that captured the world's attention involving a prototype of Apple's new iPhone 4 design in a tale that save for the lack of murder (yet?), would fit right at home on any one of Jerry Bruckheimer's prime time crime shows.

In fact Steve Jobs himself has grown to celebrity status. He was seen attending the Oscar's this year, where his new magical device was used through out the night to read off winner's of various Academy awards. The iPad continued to make cameo's in TV shows and garner attention up to it's April 3rd launch date.

Much like the iPad, the new iPhone stirred up all kinds of discussion among tech blogs and gadget forums alike. What size camera will they use? Will they finally implement multitasking, the prototype appeared to have a front-facing camera, will video calls finally be a main stay here in the U.S.?

We talked about this thing until we were blue in the face, and why? It's simple. Steve Jobs has become a present day Willy Wonka. We all wait outside his factory in Cupertino, and try to imagine what goes on inside. I myself picture an almost Utopian like society where mythical creatures run about amongst wizards who wave their wands and things like iPads just kind of appear.

Whatever your mental image, chances are, yesterday when Steve Jobs took the stage you were glued to your phone or computer, hanging on every announcement Mr. Jobs made about the new iPhone.

And if you weren't one of the millions who tuned in to Macrumors.live or Boy Genius's coverage of the event, you are at least aware of its existence and probably could tell me when the device will become available.

This phenomenon had not become so evident to me until today visiting my local post office, I overheard a clerk who was well over 60 years old (not profiling, just telling you facts) discussing with another senior citizen the problems Steve Jobs had during his keynote yesterday accessing the internet on the new iPhone due to 500+ wifi devices running. Even when Microsoft and Bill Gates were at their peak of domination, they never produced this much media attention.

Call it "magic", call it innovation, call it whatever you want, but just a few days after the announcement of the new iPhone 4, people are already guessing what the next Apple product to receive a refresh will be. A new mac mini? A revamped Apple TV? A "magic" touch pad device? Apple's ability to make something that appeals to everybody due to sexy design and simplicity is only out done by its own way of capturing our imagination and making us "think different."

In fact this is the one company where someone says "what will they think up next?" and your mind really ventures off into the seemingly  impossible because with Willy Wonka and his Cupertino factory, you never know how to answer that question.

This is Big: Bing to Replace Google in iPhone OS 4

This is some seriously big news. TechCrunch reported yesterday that according to their sources, Bing might replace Google as the default search engine in the upcoming iPhone OS 4.

To most people, this news won't mean much and some of you might even think it's not a big deal. But it is. It is a huge deal because it's just one more fight between Apple and Google in the great battle to take over the mobile market.

Back in December I wrote an article (one of the first on the topic, mind you) titled "Apple Vs Google: the war is on" in which I was kinda predicting that things were going to turn bad between the 2 giants. Then a bit later, rumors started going around that Apple and Microsoft might actually join forces to fight the oh-so-evil Google.

Today it seems that these rumors are resurfacing, and as anti-Google advocate, I'm hoping these rumors come true.

Google is rumored to be paying $100M/year to Apple for being the default search engine. My guess is that Microsoft offered at least the same amount. At any rates, I don't think Apple is in it for the money here ; after all, $100M is peanuts for Apple.

They're just realizing that the iPhone is powered by too many Google services (maps, YouTube, search), and if they want to fight Google on the mobile market, they have to fight them everywhere, which means getting rid of as many Google services.

While a Microsoft/Apple partnership would have sounded completely crazy a few years ago, it seems to make more and more sense today. Microsoft is not going to win the mobile battle (heck, they're already losing it) and they know it. They also know they have to partner with someone strong in the mobile market if they want to be relevant in search. Good move from Microsoft if indeed this rumor is true.

In the meanwhile, Apple surpasses Microsoft as the largest tech company in the world. It's crazy to see how quickly things can move.

What do you think?

Apple Surpasses Microsoft’s Market Capitalization and Becomes World’s Biggest Tech Company

Apple finally surpassed Microsoft in terms of market capitalization to become the world's largest tech company. Obviously, there are many criteria on which you can rate companies and my guess is that Microsoft still surpasses Apple on many of them (ie. market shares for the personal computer market).

Anyway you look at it, it's still huge news. At the time I'm writing this, Microsoft market cap is at 225.58 billion dollars which Apple's is at 226.57 billions.

I'm glad I got some of those Apple stocks a while back...

Apple Drops The J-Word (Jailbreaking)

"This article is about adverse issues experienced by customers who have made unauthorized modifications to the iPhone OS (this hacking process is often called "jailbreaking"). Issues that have been encountered include instability, disruption of services, and compromised security."

This is the summary of a new support document posted on Apple's website last week. I don't know if you noticed but they clearly used the word "jailbreaking". This is a first!

The document goes on and on about how bad bad bad bad bad jailbreaking is for your device. According to Apple, there are 6 main issues encountered by proud owners of jailbroken iPhones.

As much as I would like to prove Apple wrong, I have to admit that they are right on most of these issues:

Device and application instability: Frequent and unexpected crashes of the device, crashes and freezes of built-in apps and third-party apps, and loss of data.

Unreliable voice and data: Dropped calls, slow or unreliable data connections, and delayed or inaccurate location data.

Disruption of services: Services such as Visual Voicemail, YouTube, Weather, and Stocks have been disrupted or no longer work on the device. Additionally, third-party apps that use the Apple Push Notification Service have had difficulty receiving notifications or received notifications that were intended for a different hacked device. Other push-based services such as MobileMe and Exchange have experienced problems synchronizing data with their respective servers.

Compromised security: Security compromises have been introduced by these modifications that could allow hackers to steal personal information, damage the device, attack the wireless network, or introduce malware or viruses.

Shortened battery life: The hacked software has caused an accelerated battery drain that shortens the operation of an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch on a single battery charge.

Inability to apply future software updates: Some unauthorized modifications have caused damage to the iPhone OS that is not repairable. This can result in the hacked iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone OS update is installed.

What Apple failed to mention is how awesome jailbreaking is! For those of you still on the fence, you may want to learn more about what jailbreaking is, and what the reasons for jailbreaking are. If you've already jailbroken, check out the best jailbreak apps and add your favorite to the list.

Apple: Taking Over The World One Bite At A Time

By the looks of all of Apple's announcements last week, it seems they will literally control all forms of technology in 10-15 years. iAd replaces Google Adsense and HTML5 replaces and ruins Adobe.

It’s a pretty bold statement but let’s take a deeper look. You might compare Apple’s actions to the likes of Google. Google’s motto over the past few years has been "if you can’t beat'em, buy'em". Google is perhaps best known for its business acquiring capabilities. Quite often there are jokes about Google taking over the world.

Google’s actions, however, are usually widely accepted by the public and encouraged. Admit it, you kind of like it when Google acquires a new company, probably because Google has a good track record of bettering acquired services and offering them free for public consumption.

When Google acquires a service, it usually means new and innovative things are coming soon. Apple, on the other hand, is not so friendly.

Apple knows that no matter what kind of business practices they use, consumers will still buy their products since they create desirable products. So Apple decides to not incorporate Adobe Flash into the iPhone OS. Let’s consider a few reasons as to why Apple might not want to allow Flash to run on their devices.

Virtually all forms of multimedia online today can be delivered through the Flash platform. From Hulu to illegal streams of newly released movies, Adobe Flash powers all forms of media on the internet. Using Flash, you can illegally listen to new music that is being streamed through a peer to peer website. You can also find tons of sites that offer streaming of new release movies via Flash. You can play thousands of graphically advanced games via Flash as well. So why does Apple not want to allow Flash on their device?

If the previous few sentences have not made it apparent yet, here’s why: Apple makes a killing selling movies, music, and games. Billions of songs have already been downloaded from the iTunes store, and billions of games have been downloaded from the AppStore. You read that right - that’s BILLIONS (1,000,000,000++). I would say that’s a pretty profitable source of income.

If Flash were to be allowed on the iPad and the iPhone, then there would essentially be no use for Apple’s iTunes Store. Why pay $9.99 for an album and over $15 for a movie or TV show when I can stream it online for free? If Flash were to be allowed on the iPad, then they would not be profiting from their App Store or iTunes Store, at all.

So they decide to make the iPad HTML5 friendly, which is essentially a new Adobe Flash, but newer technology and less memory intensive. All of today’s dynamic online advertisements are delivered with Flash. So Apple is trying to become the father of HTML5, meaning in the future they'll essentially control the content of every website, because website creators will want to conform to Apple's rules so that their own content will be allowed to be viewed on the iPad.

Several sites have already posted an HTML5 version of their website such as TED.com, WSJ, NYTimes, MSNBC, ABC, and CNN. They all already have HTML5 friendly videos, instead of Flash, and all this only for the iPad (and it’s only been what? A few days since the release of the iPad?).

Imagine 5 years from now the control that Apple will have. Adobe itself admits today that Apple is ruining their business. Today Apple says they don't want Flash on their device. So everyone conforms. Tomorrow they'll say they don't want Google to work on their device, so everyone conforms.
