Munster: Apple television in December, iPhone 5 in October

Piper Jaffray's resident Apple analyst Gene Munster is certainly the biggest proponent of a full-blown Apple television set and I guess you could say he's actually started the whole craze in the first place.

It's been a while since we last heard from him, but now Munster's back with some updates to both iTV and iPhone 5 memes.

He sees an Apple-branded television debuting in December of this year and hitting store shelves in 2013 (hopefully, it won't be a “terrible use of retail space”).

As for a sixth-generation iPhone, or the iPhone 5 as the press dubbed it, he agrees on the general consensus of an October timeframe, which also jives well with what iMore recently heard from sources, too...

Seas0nPass iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak released for Apple TV

Hot on the heels of the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak release earlier today, Seas0nPass has been updated to bring support for the second generation Apple TV iOS 5.0.1 (iOS 5.1.1).

This release brings the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak to the Apple TV 2, which up until now could only support a tethered jailbreak. Thanks to the hard work of pod2g and others, we now have a true untethered jailbreak available for the Apple TV's latest firmware...

iTV? Think iHub.

According to Forrester Research, the key competitive advantage of Apple's rumored television set - often referred to in media reports as the iTV - won't be the television part per se.

Instead, one analyst thinks Apple should sell the world’s first non-TV TV, which would entail convincing folks they need a new screen in their lives.

It should enable the ultimate portability in that one should be able to hang it on any wall where the family congregates for the usual activities and of course it would run apps and represent the ultimate realization of everything Apple stands for...

Friday is Funday: the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak is coming tomorrow

As of this post, at about 4:45AM EST, it is 10:45AM in Amsterdam where the Hack In The Box conference is currently taking place. Just as pod2g alluded to in a previous post on his blog, it looks like the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak will be demonstrated live at the conference, along with its highly awaited released before the conference concludes.

The official Twitter account for the Hack In The Box Security Conference just sent out a tweet confirming "Jailbreak Live" will take place tomorrow, and they are offering special 1-day passes if you happen to be in the area and wish to watch history take place.

What time can you expect to see the untethered jailbreak released in your neck of the woods? We analyze the likely time for the release inside...

MuscleNerd reveals more iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak info

MuscleNerd just tweeted out a whole host of interesting info about the upcoming iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak.

Inside, he confirms that it's very likely that we will see the untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1 by the end of this week.

He also details some of the behind the scenes work that has taken place in order to make this a well supported jailbreak. iPod 3rd generation owners, and iPhone 3GS owners should take particular note...

What we learn from the Absinthe 2.0 video [updated]

Now that a video showcasing the Absinthe 2.0 iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak has finally surfaced, we can glean additional details about what to expect when the tool is released to the public.

If you haven't already seen our posts outing the name of the highly anticipated tool, or our post with the video of Absinthe in action, then be sure to take a look at those respective posts.

The nice thing about seeing the tool in action for the first time, is that we can have a clearer idea as to what to expect once the tool is released.

Here is what we've found so far...

Absinthe 2.0 iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak in action [Video]

Shortly after confirming the name of the upcoming iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak tool, iOS hacker, xvolks, uploaded a video showcasing Absinthe 2.0 in action.

xvolks warns that the video is poor quality, but given that he and the rest of the team have been working very hard on getting this release out as soon as possible, we can surely cut him some slack.

The video is of an iPhone 4 GSM running iOS 5.1.1. The iPhone 4 is jailbroken with the new Absinthe tool, which incorporates pod2g's exploits.

Check inside for a sneak peak at the new Absinthe 2.0 in action...

The new iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak tool will likely be called Absinthe 2.0

With the iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak right around the corner, work has apparently started on packaging the exploits into a tool that your average iOS device owner can utilize.

Tools like GreenPois0n and RedSn0w take 99% of the guess work out of the jailbreaks, making it so that almost anyone can take advantage of the benefits that jailbreaking brings to the table.

With that in mind, it's no surprise that the highly anticipated 5.1.1 jailbreak will follow the same pattern. Judging from a conversation I had with an iOS hacker close to pod2g, it appears that the latest jailbreak tool in the pipeline will retain the Absinthe name.

In other words, I'd say it's totally reasonable to expect an Absinthe 2.0 iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak sometime within the next few days...

iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak release is just days away

It looks like the prospect of the iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak being released during the Hack In The Box security conference is becoming more likely, as pod2g announces on twitter that the jailbreak release is mere days away.

A few days ago, pod2g said that "something big" will happen during the event regarding jailbreaking. Honestly, what can be bigger than the 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak?

Get ready ladies and gentlemen, it's almost here...

New Party Doodles app shows the potential of Apple TV gaming

I've said before that I felt like AirPlay Mirroring was one of the most underrated features of iOS 5. The ability to wirelessly stream content from the device to a TV seemed like an open invitation for iOS developers to create console-esque games.

We've seen a couple of big name titles take advantage of this, but perhaps none of them showcases the feature's potential better than Cerebral Gardens' recently-released Party Doodles...

On clueless analysts and iTV being such a “terrible use of retail space”

Pacific Crest's Andy Hargreaves wins the coveted title for this week's Most Idiotic Analysis concerning a rumored HD TV television set from Apple, aptly dubbed by the press the iTV.

In a note issued to clients on Tuesday, Hargreaves provided two arguments against an Apple-branded telly.

First, such a device would be of little value to couch potatoes unless it came with a bucket load of premium Hollywood entertainment. Up to a point, he argued Apple thus far has failed to get content owners in line to stream movies and television shows to the TV.

Bear with me for a sec.

Secondly, he wrote a 46-inch HD TV set "would be a terrible use of retail space relative to iPhone, iPad or the Apple TV set-top box".

Has this guy heard of warehouses? What about jumbo-sized walls of Apple's retail stores? And whoever said Apple would need to stock hundreds of big-screen iTVs in retail outlets, especially if they'll fetch a cool $2,000 a pop, as rumored...

Apple looking to bring WatchESPN app to Apple TV

Bloomberg is out with a new report this afternoon, claiming that Apple is in talks with Disney to bring its WatchESPN app to the Apple TV. The app, which is currently available on the iPhone and iPad, allows existing ESPN subscribers to watch sporting events on the go.

Apple TV already contains apps from the NBA, MLB, and NHL — all of which provide live broadcasts of league games to subscribers. But ESPN's offering would feature much more rounded coverage, including basketball, baseball, golf, soccer, tennis and more...
