iPhone firmware 2.1 coming friday

At his Let's Rock event, Steve Jobs announced that a new iPhone firmware 2.1 will be made available for download this friday.

Steve Jobs called it a "big" update but seeing what this update will bring, it looks to me like the usual "bug fixes" update...Here is what Steve had to say about the new 2.1 iPhone and iPod Touch firmware:

no crashes with applications - Oh, thanks Steve, you're too generous... fewer dropped calls - never had any issue with that. This means they will update the baseband big battery improvement - Hmm, I heard that before... faster backups - ok, cool, what else? that's it

You will ask: "what about this fucking copy/paste I've been waiting for since June 29, 2007?" Well my friend, no word about this. Now, if Apple had added copy/paste or push notification, THAT would have been a "BIG" update. To me this update should have been 2.0.3 and not 2.1.

I highly recommend you wait for the DevTeam to come up with a new Pwnage tool before upgrading - that is for users with jailbroken iPhones, of course!

I personally won't have time to report everything going on. If everything interesting comes out for the iPhone, I will let you know. I will pass on the useless details about the new iPod Nano and other MacBook stuff...

iPhone Tunnel Suite gets many updates

Since I wrote about iPhone tunnel Suite 2.5 last week, a lots have been going on for this useful little application as iMakkie has been updating a couple times.

iPhone Tunnel Suite 2.6 - 09/06/08

Added Features:

You can kill iTunnel and iConnect processes by clicking the X buttons. iConnect window its not appearing anymore. A new notify icon that show iTunnel and iConnect status. You can switch device by right-clicking the notify icon!

iPhone Tunnel Suite 2.7 - 09/07/08

Bug fix Little Updates Now iTunnel auto-start if not started and needed!

Why all these updates? Either iMakkie is very bored, or he wants us (and me!) to talk about iPhone Tunnel Suite and create a buzz. I believe he doesn't have much to do and he is on top of listening to his users who report about minor bugs. Good job, iMakkie!

I yet have to work on a tutorial on how to use iPhone Tunnel Suite but I've been kinda busy lately (moving to a new house with Tina).

On his blog, iMakkie also posted a mockup for what couple the possible UI of iPhone Tunnel Suite 3.0. You can see this mockup below.

Why jailbreak your iPhone

BigBoss, as usual, has a very interesting post on his blog about the reasons why you would jailbreak your iPhone. I wrote many posts about jailbreaking your phone and you may see most of them here. I will sum this up the reasons why you would want jailbreak your iPhone but I invite you to read his full post.

WinterBoard + Customize Jailbreak to fix Apple's bugs Cycorder and Snapture Launchers Cydia Taking control of your system Unlocking

BigBoss goes more into detail for each of these reasons and it's worth the read.

I have 76 iPhone 3G for sale

Well, I don't. But the DevTeam posted this morning that"Duchess", a DevTeam member was so upset with the lack of 3G unlock she went around and bought up all the available SIM-free 3G handsets in her town.

I wouldn't want to pay her credit card bill...

From the DevTeam:

NB: This is NOT any cryptic update on 3G unlock progress, just a cool photo from one of our members, so conspiracy theorists please replace your tin-foil hats ;) We are still working on the 3G unlock as hard as we can.

EA Games coming up with 9 more games for the iPhone

EA Games announced that it will soon release 9 more games for the iPhone, namely:

Yahtzee Adventures Mini Golf Lemonade Tycoon Mahjong Monopoly: Here & Now The World Edition SimCity Tiger Woods PGA Tour ‘09 Need for Speed Undercover Sims 3

I am not really into video games. Having ADD alows me to spend only a few minutes on them before I get bored. I really can't wait for the Monopoly game though.

Record videos on your iPhone with Cycorder 0.9-4

Hooray! Cycorder just updated to version 0.9-4 and now allows you to record videos with sound on your iPhone. I have to say I am really impressed by the quality of the picture and the sound recording.

Cycorder allows you to record videos on your iPhone at the maximum speed of the iPhone camera (6-15 frames per second), with no compression delay between pressing sop and getting to view the resulting video.

Cycorder does MJPEG compression and video files are recorded at 384×288, a 4×3 TV aspect ratio.

How do you get your recorded video from your iPhone to your computer? When you record a video, it is placed as a .mov movie in /var/mobile/Media/Videos. Apparently, a future version might integrate into DCIM.

Here is what this 0.9-4 upgrade brings to Cycorder:

audio recording TV out supported playback (does that mean TV output?) no autolock when recording a few minor fixes

I recorded my own video and made it available to you. You can view this video made with Cycorder here.

The application is only available in Cydia and believe it or not, it is free. It shows ads while you record but these ads are not intrusive at all. Ads don’t show anywhere on your recording when you’re watching.

iPhone fix to “Unable to Download Application” error

Have you ever had this error message on your iPhone while trying to download an application or a game: Unable to download application.

There is a pretty easy fix for this and here is how it works:

Simply double tap the icon of the application that gives you trouble and wait for a few seconds. It should then be available.

If it does not work, the problem may also be that the app didn't get downloaded completely. So, remove it and try downloading it again. I found it much better to download app over wifi, rather than 3G.

A new ZiPhone in the work

Zibri posted this weekend that he is currently working on a new version of ZiPhone. I have always been a big fan of ZiPhone as it offers a one-click jailbreak/unlock for the iPhone. I really respect the DevTeam and cmw for QuickPwn and WinPwn, but I have to admit my heart goes to ZiPhone...

Here is what Zibri says:

I’m testing at the moment a very preliminary version of the next ZiPhone.. Let me tell you it’s impressive. A very few testers screamed when they saw how simple is this. I can’t tell you more for now.. It’s really to early.

This makes me think that ZiPhone is gonna be much easier to use than QuickPwn and WinPwn, which are already dead simple...

iPhone Tunnel Suite 2.5

[digg-me]Wanna SSH into your iPhone but don't have wifi. Well, rejoice because thanks to th enew iPhone Tunnel Suite 2.5, you're now gonna be able to just that, with the help of a USB cable.

The iPhone Tunnel Suite supports tethering and all other SSH possibilities via USB cable.

The Version 2.5 is currently in an closed beta-test but will be released in a few days.

Supposedly, you're gonna be able to use your iPhone as a 3G/EDGE modem and a WIFI antenna.

You will be able to sftp on the iPhone, share internet connection from the iPhone or use the iPod Touch as a wifi antenna via usb cable. You'll also be able to use terminal via usb cable.

QuickPwn Mac OS X Tutorial

[digg-me]How to use QuickPwn Mac OS X to jailbreak the iPhone? This is a very good question that will find answer in the new few paragraphs. Before we start, I want to make it clear that QuickPwn for Mac OS X does not activate; it just pawns firmware 2.0.2 (at least to this date).

Another thing I would like to add is that you are pawning your iPhone at your own risk and it will void Apple's warranty. It is also worth noting that pawning your iPhone is illegal. I know, it's your phone, you should be able to do whatever you do with it but it still illegal. Ok, let's go.

QuickPwn Mac OS X Guide:

Before starting: your iPhone must be on firmware 2.0.2.

Download QuickPwn Mac OS X from here or from our iPhone Downloads section. Also download the 2.0.2 firmware for your iPhone and place it in your DOCUMENTS folder. It is very important you put it there as QuickPwn will automatically look for it at this location. Open QuickPwn and click OK to the warning. The next few steps are all automated, you pretty much have nothing to do but sit and relax. QuickPwn will ask you to connect your iPhone. Do so and click OK. QuickPwn will then automatically detect your device. Then QuickPwn will automatically build the custom firmware for you. It should say "Building IPSW". It will then ask for your password. Enter it. OK, now is the part where you actually work a little bit... Follow the onscreen instructions to put your iPhone into DFU mode. Wait for QuickPwn to pawn your iPhone. Then you will get a message telling you that "QuickPwn is modifying your device". Click OK and you will get a cute success message (you'll see what I mean). This process may take a few minutes and your iPhone will reboot automatically. Done!

So, wasn't that hard, was it? Please leave comments.
