Profile of Tim Cook offers insight into his early years

The details of Tim Cook's life post high school are fairly well known. We know he went to and graduated from Auburn University, and that he bounced around at a few companies, including Compaq, before landing at Apple in the late 90's. And the rest is history.

But what about before all of that? Well, until now not much was known about what Cook was like in his earlier years. That changed this week though with a profile of the CEO published bynews site AL.com. And yes, we've collected some excerpts for you below...

Samsung introduces new ‘Gear Fit’ fitness tracker

As Apple and Google prepare their entries into the rising wearables space, Samsung introduced 3 new products into its already-seasoned line of smartwatches at Mobile World Congress this week. There's the Gear 2 and the Gear 2 Neo, and now we have the Gear Fit.

We've already seen the 2 new Gear watches—they're very similar to their predecessor in that they look, well, like watches. The Gear Fit, however, unveiled yesterday alongside the Galaxy S5, looks more like a cross between a smartwatch and a Fitbit Force fitness band...

p0sixspwn updated to jailbreak iOS 6.1.6

p0sixspwn—the jailbreak tool created by the tandem of iH8sn0w and new Apple employee Winocm—has been updated to support the just-released iOS 6.1.6 for an untethered jailbreak. iOS 6.1.6 was released solely for the iPhone 3GS and the iPod touch 4th generation. The firmware update was pushed out as a part of Apple's SSL security fix, which also ushered in iOS 7.0.6 for more recent devices.

If you're currently using an iPhone 3GS or a 4th generation iPod touch running iOS 6.1.x, it's highly recommended that you update to iOS 6.1.6, and benefit from Apple's SSL fix. The good news is that you can then use p0sixspwn to enjoy the same untethered jailbreak that was available for iOS 6.1.3 through iOS 6.1.5.

This Steve Jobs statue is headed to Cupertino

A rather interesting statue honoring Steve Jobs was unveiled in Belgrade, Serbia today by famed sculptor Dragan Radenovic. The work is the result of an art competition that saw more than 10,000 entries and will end up in Apple's Cupertino headquarters.

The statue, which has been garnering mixed feedback as the story bounced around the web today, features Jobs' head along with the Latin letter A and the binary digits one and zero. It also features a pair of Serbian letters: E, and then III rests at the bottom...

Bing iOS app updated with Safari integration, new search features and more

Microsoft has updated its mobile Bing client for iOS today, bringing the app to version 4.4. The update brings about a number of new features and improvements that both current Bing and potential future Bing users might find worth checking out.

Perhaps most interesting of the additions is a new shake-to-discover feature, which allows you to shake your iPhone about to discover random 'Trending' news topics. Microsoft also added the ability to copy URLs and open URLs in mobile Safari...

Samsung unveils new Galaxy S5 with heart-rate monitor, fingerprint scanner and more

Out of all the major manufacturers presenting new products at Mobile World Congress this week, no keynote was more highly anticipated than Samsung's Unpacked 5 event. The South Korean company is the hottest name in Android right now, and it was expected to unveil its latest flagship smartphone.

And it delivered. This afternoon, Samsung introduced the new Galaxy S5 handset to a packed auditorium in Barcelona, Spain. There were no paid TV hosts or Broadway dancers this time around, just Samsung leadership up on stage talking about the smartphone they built for the year 2014 and beyond...

Imagination spotlights likely iPhone 6 GPU: 192 cores, 4K resolution, smokes Tegra K1 violently

Apple's been using GPU parts from Imagination Technologies since switching to its own in-house designed iOS device processors, starting with the iPhone 3Gs in 2009. This UK-based firm does not churn out actual chips. Instead, it licenses out its GPU designs and intellectual property to vendors like Apple, Intel, Qualcomm and many others - that's why "they" call it a fabless semiconductor maker.

Now, Apple's engine that powers iOS devices typically combines Imagination's GPU and ARM's CPU blueprints with some memory, I/O logic and other supporting functions on a single die, a solution known in the semiconductor industry as a system-on-a-chip (SoC).

Moreover, both Apple and Intel own a stake in Imagination, another indication of its importance to Apple's mobile future. See, Imagination's PowerVR graphics processors coupled with Apple's efficient mobile operating system have been largely responsible for the smooth graphics, transitions and animations seen throughout iOS. It's the reason iOS is the smoothest mobile OS out there.

At CES earlier this year, Imagination unveiled a new GPU that we suspect should make its way into upcoming iOS devices. Today, the company is detailing some of its more intricate aspects and boy does it make our hearts sing: it supports 4K resolutions and outperforms even Nvidia's upcoming Tegra K1, apparently enabling the most powerful graphics yet in mobile phones and tablets...

How to easily change the color of your iPhone keyboard

Update: with the release of iOS 8, Apple now allows third-party keyboards in the App Store. If you're looking for a different keyboard for your iPhone or iPad, make sure to check out our list of iOS 8 keyboards.

I generally hate jailbreak releases that feature goofy names like ColorY0urBoard, but I decided to give the new jailbreak app a try despite my inclinations. To my surprise, ColorY0urBoard is actually not that bad of an app.

If you're searching for a way to easily customize the color of the stock keyboard within iOS, then ColorY0urBoard is a viable option. It's a standalone app release with an interface dedicated solely to changing the keyboard color. The app includes a color wheel, much like you'd find in image-editing applications, and it also features brightness and alpha sliders to perfect your customized look.

ColorY0urBoard isn't perfect, but it does a pretty good job of customizing the look of your keyboard. Have a glance at our video walkthrough inside for more details.

How to get 3GB of free OneDrive storage (and how to fix it if it doesn’t work)

As part of Microsoft's rebranding of its SkyDrive cloud storage solution to the arguably much better "OneDrive," the Redmond firm has set about something of a charm offensive. In an attempt to try and take users away from the hugely awesome Dropbox, Microsoft has already given away 100GB of free storage to the first 100,000 people to sign into the new OneDrive, but if you weren't in on that action then fear not, because you can also snag 3GB of space for absolutely nothing. And that's on top of the 7GB that they offer up right out of the gate.

In order to get your slice of the free cloud-based pie, all you need to do is install one of Microsoft's OneDrive mobile apps – the iOS one, preferably – and enable one little feature. In all honesty it's a feature you're going to want to enable anyway, because Microsoft is giving away 3GB of free storage to anyone that turns on automatic uploading of their Camera Roll.

Now you may be saying the same thing that we said. Why would you want to do that if you already use Dropbox? Well, here's why...

How to quickly launch apps using gestures

Gestr is a brand new jailbreak tweak that allows users to assign gestures to a specific app and launch the app using the assigned gesture. The tweak, which is available for $0.99 on Cydia's BigBoss repo, uses an Activator action to engage the screen used for inputing gestures.

In the end, Gestr probably isn't a tweak that will significantly speed up app launches on iOS, but it's undoubtedly a cool way to do so. Have a look inside for our video walkthrough, which showcases how it works.
