EU and Justice Department give Google the green light for Motorola Mobility purchase

From AllThingsD:

Google has gotten the all-clear from European Union regulators to buy Motorola Mobility, though officials remain concerned about how Google will use Motorola’s patent portfolio.

“This merger decision should not and will not mean that we are not concerned by the possibility that, once Google is the owner of this portfolio, Google can abuse these patents, linking some patents with its Android devices,” Commissioner Joaquin Almunia told reporters, according to Reuters. “This is our worry.”

Hours after the EU gave its agreement, the US Department of Justice gave its blessing as well:

With this, Google is one step closer to closing the deal, although they’re still waiting on approval from China, Taiwan, and Israel before the transaction can officially be completed.

World War III is just about to start, and it's all about patents!

Can you identify this iPhone thief?

This video was taken by a man who witnessed another man stealing an iPhone from a backpack left behind on a London train. The thief had the balls to open up the bag and steal the iPhone from it in front of everyone, which enraged our amateur cameraman.

After arguing back and forth for a few minutes, the thief just grabs his bicycle and leaves the train, as if nothing had happened...

Apple stock reaching new heights, now worth more than Google and Microsoft combined

It sure is a good time to be an Apple investor. After reaching new records a couple weeks ago, the stock hasn't stopped going up ever since. AAPL is currently trading at about $495, which is an absolute record.

As 9to5Mac notes, at its current $460 billion market capitalization, Apple is worth more than 10% of all NASDAQ combined. More impressive maybe is that Apple is worth 52 times RIM's value, more than 5 times Amazon's, more than twice the value of Google, and almost double the size of Microsoft. Heck, Apple is worth more than Google and Microsoft combined!

Tweetbot Updated to Version 2.0

I find Tweetbot to be "over designed," meaning its user interface it's too heavy for my eyes. I hear it's still people's favorite Twitter app for iPhone though, so they must definitely be doing something right.

Today, Tweetbot was updated to version 2.0, bringing the following new features:

ContactPrivacy: a New Jailbreak Tweak That Warns You When Apps Try to Access Your Contacts Data

Following yesterday's Path debacle about how the app uploads your entire address book to its servers without your knowledge, jailbreak developer Ryan Petrich decided to do what Apple should have done in the first place: having a notification for when apps try to access your contacts data.

The jailbreak tweak is conveniently called ContactPrivacy and is a free download from Cydia. After installing ContactPrivacy on your iPhone, you won't find any new icon or settings to tweak...

Sprint Nextel is expected to release its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2011 later today, and it appears that numbers are even worse than they were during the previous quarter.

For the three months that ended on December 31st, Sprint lost $1.3 billion on revenue of $8.7 billion. That compares to a loss of $929 million on revenue of $8.3 billion for the same quarter the previous year.

Everything isn't that bad for Sprint though. The company managed to sell 1.8 million iPhones, of which 40% were new customers..
