Apple offered Samsung a cross-licensing deal prior to trial

As the wave of injunction motions and appeals requests continue in the aftermath of this summer's high-profile Apple vs. Samsung trial, another interesting tidbit has been brought to light.

According to recently-filed court documents, it looks like Apple tried to offer Samsung a cross-licensing deal involving 3G/UMTS patents back in April, hoping to avoid at least some litigation...

Lockitron lets you lock and unlock your door with your iPhone

Shortly after introducing the App Store in 2008, Apple started running an ad campaign with the tag line "there's an app for that." It produced a series of TV commercials that highlighted iPhone apps that made otherwise arduous tasks, like counting calories and apartment hunting, a lot easier.

But in 2012, apps are doing a lot more than diet tracking and crawling rental property listings. Now they're parking cars, making coffee, and thanks to Apigy's new Lockitron deadbolt cover, they're locking and unlocking doors...

Elevation Dock hacked to support new Lightning connector

Since the iPhone 5 launched two weeks ago with its new Lightning port, accessories have been extremely scarce. Lightning to USB cables alone have been hard to find, never mind docks and other add-ons.

Thus, we imagine we'll be seeing a slew of do-it-yourself solutions pop up over the next few months. In fact, one has already surfaced involving an Elevation Dock, some hacking and a Lightning USB cable...

Infographic shows true cost of an iPhone 5

Like its predecessor, the iPhone 5 starts at $650 here in the US. That's the full retail cost for the entry-level 16GB model, which is pretty expensive by most standards.

Luckily, many carriers will pay for $450 of that, knocking the price down to $199, if you're willing to sign a two year contract with them. How can they afford to do that?

Oh don't worry, they make their money back and then some...

Major Exchange bug spotted in iOS 6

Since its release two weeks ago, Apple has taken an enormous amount of criticism over iOS 6. The bulk of the heat has come over the new, so-called inferior Maps application, but there have also been complaints of Wi-Fi and App Store issues.

In fact, according to a new report today, some major companies are urging their employees not to update their iOS devices to the new firmware. But it's not because of Maps or Wi-Fi problems. It has to do with a major Exchange bug...

The HackStore is a viable alternative to the Mac App Store [sponsored]

Back in April, a handful of developers launched the HackStore, an alternative to the Mac App Store. Similar to Cydia for iOS, the HackStore hosts third-party Mac applications that for one reason or another didn't make it past Apple's approval process.

In our first take, we noted that while the Store looked good, it needed some work. It was a bit buggy, and only contained around 50 apps. But after nearly 6 months and a number of updates, we figured it was time to give the HackStore another run-through...

Eric Schmidt: a Google Maps app is up to Apple

As Apple continues to take heat over its new mapping software, the question on everyone's mind seems to be: will Google release a standalone Maps app for iOS? It's a fair question, considering it recently published a YouTube app for the platform.

But a report that surfaced last week claiming Google had already submitted a Maps app to Apple and was awaiting approval was quickly debunked. And Eric Schmidt himself confirmed yesterday that his company hasn't made a move yet...

Consumer Reports gives iPhone 5 a thumbs-up

Consumer Reports is an 80+ year-old American magazine that publishes reviews and opinions on new consumer products and services. It's physical publication has more than 7 million monthly subscribers and is highly regarded among shoppers.

The magazine has quite a history with Apple, once giving the iPhone 4 a "cannot recommend status," back in 2010, and then sensationalizing the iPad 3's overheating issue earlier this year. But as it turns out, it actually really likes the iPhone 5...

Verizon iPhone 5 to stay unlocked due to FCC agreements

Last week, we discovered that the Verizon version of the iPhone 5 comes with an unlocked SIM slot. Our very own Jeff confirmed the theory by using his VZW handset to connect to AT&T's GSM network.

While this was obviously great news, we were worried that things wouldn't stay this way because carriers don't generally like unlocked phones. But according to a new report, Verizon may not have a choice...

Apple announces 5 million iPhone 5 sales during launch weekend

Apple has announced that it sold a record-breaking 5 million iPhone 5s during its three day launch weekend, besting its previous record set by the iPhone 4S last year by more than a million.

The numbers shouldn't surprise anyone, considering the amount of demand we've seen for the device thus far. Apple said last week that it sold more than 2 million units in its first 24 hours...

Apple said to be “aggressively” recruiting ex-Google Maps staff

Apple publicly commented on the ongoing criticism of its new Maps application last week, essentially asking users to be patient, as the service would get better over time.

But patience is a hard thing to ask for in a space as competitive as the smartphone market. So it looks like Apple is going to help speed up the process with some ex-Googlers...
