Continuing our coverage on Apple's earnings call from yesterday afternoon, we have an interesting comment made by Tim Cook in response to a question asked by an analyst during the Q&A portion. The question was in regards to Apple entering new product categories this year.

Obviously, Cook didn't say exactly what the company's plans are for future products, but parts of his otherwise boiler-plate answer were worth noting. The CEO said Apple has zero issue coming up with new ideas, but the challenge is focusing on the few of them that deserve energy...

Apple posted some huge sales numbers for the holiday quarter earlier today. During the 3-month period, the company sold 51 million iPhones, 26 million iPads—both records—and a surprisingly high 4.8 million Macs. But not all of its device sales were impressive.

iPod sales decreased by more than 50% since last year's holiday quarter, with Apple selling just 6 million units during the time frame. And during the company's earnings call, Tim Cook admitted that it has known for some time that the iPod is a declining business...

Apple says iOS 7 is now installed on 80% of compatible devices

Apple has updated its App Store support page for developers this week to reflect new information regarding iOS 7 adoption. According to the company’s usage data, the new OS is running on 80% of iOS devices accessing the App Store.

That’s just a small jump from December of last year, when it was reported that iOS 7 adoption had hit 78%, but Apple said on its earnings call just a few moments ago that it's enough to make iOS 7 the most popular OS in the world...

As expected, Apple is out with its financial report for Q1 2014 this afternoon. It’s an important one, as it follows a number of product releases in the late fall of last year, and then of course the holiday season, where the company typically posts huge numbers.

Foxconn looking to open large display manufacturing plant in US

Foxconn is looking to beef up its presence in the US according to some recent comments made by Terry Gou. During an event marking the company's 40th anniversary, the chairman said they were exploring the possibly of opening a large display plant in the country.

The manufacturing giant already has a handful of factories scattered across the US, but this particular facility would be capable of producing TV-sized display panels over 60-inches. And the move could save Foxconn's American clients millions of dollars in shipping costs...

Virgin Mobile now offering unsubsidized iPhone 5s for $495, 5c for $405

Folks in the market for a prepaid iPhone may want to check out Virgin Mobile. The Sprint networked-backed MVNO has just shaved another 10% off its iPhone selection, bringing about some of the cheapest unsubsidized prices we've seen for the handset.

The discount brings the cost of the 16GB iPhone 5s down to $495, and the 32GB 5s down to $585. And if you want to go for the 64GB model, it'll only cost you $675—just a little bit more than you'd normally pay for a 16GB full retail...

Samsung and Google agree to 10-year patent deal

Huge news coming out of Mountain View this afternoon. Google has announced that it has reached a global patent cross-licensing agreement with Android heavyweight Samsung, covering a broad range of technologies and business areas.

Few details are known about the agreement at this time, but the companies have said that it's a 10-year deal and that it covers all current and future technology patents. The move will bolster the patent positions for both Samsung and Google...

On January 24, 1984, Steve Jobs demonstrated the original Macintosh for the first time at an Apple shareholders meeting in Cupertino. You've probably seen a video of the presentation; it's the one where Jobs is introduced by a joke-telling Mac.
