The upcoming Dyson CleanTrace attachment works with the company’s Gen5detect vacuum and iPhone app to let you clean the room in augmented reality (AR).
The only downside is that CleanTrace works with Dyson’s Gen5detect vacuum. The accessory will be available globally from June 2024 at an as-of-yet-undisclosed price, according to a press release the company shared with iMore and other outlets.
CleanTrace takes advantage of the LiDAR sensor in your iPhone to map the room and understand where furniture is, which can be done because an iPhone is attached securely to the vacuum via a special clip-on attachment.
Cleaning intelligence
The MyDyson app leverages depth data and cleaning intelligence to overlay cleaning pathways in augmented reality (AR) so you don’t miss anything.
Actually, this is one of the most compelling use cases for AR where showing you the areas you have against sections that need cleaning can be really helpful.
The app connects with the sensors in a Gen5detect that count the collected dust particles. You get numerical and visual overviews which give you a good picture of cleaning effectiveness. Missed spots are highlighted so you can go over them.
You must be thinking, “Wow, but how about vacuuming while wearing Vision Pro?” While it can be technically done, please don’t for your own safety.
But since you brought it up, gamefying vacuuming isn’t a new idea. When Apple launched its Vision Pro headset in February, one of early concepts was this YouTube video showing vacuuming gold coins in AR.
Dyson would be very wise to add something like this to its mobile software.
Pricing and availability
Dyson CleanTrace will launch globally sometime in June 2024. The company has said that the accessory will work with its Gen5detect vacuum cleaner and require a 106-gram clamp for attaching your phone to the cleaner.
