What’s new in iOS 17.4.1?

Released on March 21, 2024, iOS 17.4.1 and iPadOS 17.4.1 provide essential bug fixes and security updates. Apple recommends all users install the update.

The iOS 17.4.1 changelog on Apple’s website is scant: “This update provides important bug fixes and security updates and is recommended for all users.”

This isn’t very informative, so let’s take a look at Apple’s support page dedicated to detailing security releases in its software. Here, Apple details a pair of important security patches included in iOS 17.4.1 and iPadOS 17.4.1.

The first fixes a CoreImage issue where processing an image could lead to arbitrary code execution, which was patched with improved input validation.

The second addresses a bug with the WebRTC system that enables web browsers and apps to support real-time communication. “An out-of-bounds write issue was addressed with improved input validation,” Apple notes in the document.

macOS Sonoma 14.4.1 and Ventura 13.6.6 also available

Four days after iOS and iPadOS 17.4.1 became available for public consumption, Apple unleashed the matching macOS Sonoma 14.4.1 update and Ventura 13.6.6 for older Mac computers. Both updates include the same security patches for CoreImage and WebRTC as iOS and iPadOS 17.4.1.

iOS 17.4.1 arrived less than three weeks following iOS 17.4. Aside from changes for users in the European Union to comply with the Digital Markets Act, iOS 17.4 brought a dozen new features like podcast transcripts, new emoji, Stolen Device Protection while away from home and detailed battery stats on the iPhone 15 series.
