Apple seems to be testing a HomePod with a built-in touchscreen display

Code strings in tvOS 17.4, an upcoming Apple TV update, suggest Apple could be internally testing a HomePod with a built-in display.

tvOS 17.4 references an unreleased device with a “Z314” identifier, running Apple’s A15 chip (current HomePod and HomePod mini models use Apple Watch processors). The “Z314” identifier is not present in older tvOS builds, suggesting Apple may have already begun internal testing of a screen-equipped HomePod.

tvOS 17.4 also brings SwiftUI frameworks to the HomePod firmware and a system tool used to debug unresponsive interfaces in iOS apps. Why would these features exist in tvOS if Apple wasn’t working on a smart speaker with a built-in screen?

For context, the tvOS operating system powers both the Apple TV and HomePod but the HomePod version lacks a user interface.

Apple now testing a future HomePod with a built-in screen

Filipe Espósito, 9to5Mac:

Based on our findings, the unreleased “Z314” device is powered by an A15 Bionic chip, which interestingly is the same as the iPad mini 6. Code reveals that there are internal development and also production versions of this product under test, which suggests that it may have reached an advanced stage of development.

This isn’t the first time we heard about a touchscreen-equipped HomePod. In March 2023, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said a HomePod with a fully functional display the size of an iPad mini would arrive in early 2024. If Kuo’s prediction is anything to go by, the next HomePod may launch alongside new iPads and Macs this spring.

More proof a screen-equipped HomePod is coming soon

Apple leaker “Kosutami” later published claimed pictures of what looks like a HomePod featuring a curved LCD display instead of an LED array at the top.

The device, codenamed B720, allegedly will render a blurred animation based on the colors of the album art when enjoying audio via Apple Music or Apple Podcasts.

The integrated display would presumably perform other functions, like showing important notifications or interactive controls for the smart home. A feature like StandBy, which turns the iPhone into a smart display when charging in landscape orientation, could also be in the works for a screen-equipped HomePod.
