You can now track 32 items in the Find My app instead of 16

Apple’s Find My app can now track 32 AirTags and other accessories in the Items tab, but some AirPods models may count as more than a single items.

When the AirTag debuted, the Find My app on the iPhone, iPad and Mac could track no more than sixteen products listed underneath the Items tab. Apple has now doubled the maximum number of items that can be tracked in the Find My app to 32.

However, some AirPods models may count as multiple items. For example, the second-generation AirPods Pro count as three items.

The new item limit is confirmed in Apple’s updated support document about using Find My track personal items, spotted by MacRumors. It’s unclear when the limit was boosted, but some blogs say it was quietly increased with iOS 16 in 2022.

Apple reveals some AirPods count as more than one item, but AirPods Max aren’t among them—the $550 over-ear headphones lack a charging case that would count as a second item (they charge via the built-in Lightning connector).

Why some AirPods count as multiple items in Find My

But what about AirPods that do ship with a charging case, like the regular AirPods and the first-generation AirPods Pro? Well, the charging case of those AirPods doesn’t participate in the Find My network, so they show up as two items in Find My, with the left and right earbuds listed separately.

Finally, the second-generation AirPods Pro (both Lightning and USB-C versions) ship with an improved charging case with Find My support so they count as three items—the left and right earbuds are two items, and the charging case is a third item.

What’s the Items tab in the Find My app?

The Find My app can track people who share their location with you, your active devices like iPhones, iPads and Macs, plus accessories referred to as Items.

Products that fall under the Items category include Apple’s AirTag personal item tracker, AirPods and Beats headphones and compatible third-party accessories such as the Venmo bikes that feature built-in Find My functionality.

To check if your AirPods participate in the Find My network, venture into Settings > Bluetooth on your iPhone and hit the ⓘ (Info) button next to your listed AirPods, then scroll down and confirm that the Find My network switch is turned on.
