An Apple silicon update to the discontinued 27-inch iMac not in the works after all

Apple is not developing an Apple silicon successor to the 27-inch iMac. Isntead, the company would prefer if customers focused on the current 24-inch M3 iMacs.

Apple has put an end to rumors calling for a revival of the 27-inch iMac. A company representative has come forward to publicly confirm there are no plans to update the all-in-one desktop that was discontinued in March 2022.

In its statement to The Verge, Apple said “no” to a replacement for the Intel-based 27 incher. However, the company’s messaging does leave the door open for the possibility of a larger-screened iMac beyond 27 inches down the road.

There won’t be an Apple silicon version of the discontinued 27-inch iMac

Dan Seifert, The Verge:

Apple will not be making an Apple silicon version of the 27-inch iMac to replace the Intel-equipped model that it discontinued in 2022. The company is instead focusing the iMac line around the 24-inch model that was first released in early 2021 and just updated with the new M3 processor this fall.

Starlayne Meza, Apple’s PR representative, has confirmed the claims to The Verge, saying the company “encourages those who have been holding out hope for a larger iMac to consider the Studio Display and Mac Studio or Mac mini.”

Of course, Apple’s PR person will downplay an unreleased product and praise the current offering. But telling iMac fans to consider a setup with a separate computer and screen versus the iMac’s breathtaking all-in-one design is disingenuous.

Bigger-screened iMacs could be in the works

For many people like this author, the iMac is why we like this company so much. The inaugural candy-colored computer that saved Apple from the brink of destruction in the 1990s has undergone many design and engineering revisions and design over the years, including the famous “lamp” look.

But Apple isn’t lying; there won’t be a new 27-inch iMac. Not because the company doesn’t believe in iMacs with bigger screens—quite the contrary, the company might be developing a bigger-than-30-inch iMac as we speak.

That’s according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who also learned from his sources that Apple has been developing a successor to the $4999 iMac Pro. However, that computer “won’t be anytime soon,” Gurman cautioned.
