iPhone 15 could have faster fast charging and a color-matched braided USB-C cable

The iPhone 15 lineup could charge faster when paired with a 35W power adapter and come bundled with a color-matched braided USB-C cable.

9to5Mac has learned from unnamed industry sources that some new iPhone 15 models can charge faster with a 35-watt power adapter.

Also, two leakers have shared images purportedly showing Apple’s new USB-C to USB-C charging cables that appear braided and color-matched.

The leakers suspect these cables could be for upcoming phones as they differ from Apple’s existing woven cables bundled with the MacBook Air and iMac

Apple bundles color-matched cables with the MacBook Air and iMac, but these are woven. Now, leakers @MajinBuOfficial and @KosutamiSan have shared images allegedly showing braided cables with a USB-C connector on both ends.

Three cable colors can be seen on the images: pink, gray and black. The cables feature plastic tubes for strain relief and a polished glass shell for the connector.

iPhone 15 may get faster fast-charging

Apple is expected to ditch its proprietary Lightning charging port with USB-C, starting with the iPhone 15 family, to adhere to the EU’s new rules. This has created an opportunity for it to improve fast charging support on the iPhone.

The iPhone 14 Pro draws up to 27 watts of power when recharging, with the regular iPhone 14 limited to 25 watts. It takes about two hours to fully recharge an iPhone 14 Pro Max at these speeds and about an hour for an iPhone 14.

Charging speeds on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pros max out at 23 and 27 watts, respectively. But if the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models do end up supporting charging at 35 watts of power, as 9to5Mac claims, charging speeds will increase provided battery capacity stays the same as on the iPhone 14 family.

Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra supports “super fast charging,” which can recharge the device fully in less than an hour when used with a special 45-watt charger.

Reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that the iPhone 15 might only support faster charging when certified USB-C cables are used.

What to know about fast charging on the iPhone

All iPhones from the iPhone 8 onward support fast charging with a USB-C power adapter and a USB-C to Lightning cable, but the amount of wattage required deepens on the model. For the iPhone 8, iPhone X, iPhone XS and iPhone 11 families, you must use an 18-watt USB-C charger to get the fast-charge feature.

The iPhone 12 and later require a 20-watt charger for fast charging. The iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 models can achieve even faster charging with a more powerful charger. Charging speeds of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 lineups are the same.

As mentioned, the regular iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 models can reach 23 watts, while the iPhone 13 Pros and iPhone 14 Pros support charging speeds of 27 watts.

If you own an iPhne 13 or iPhone 14, your safest bet is to get Apple’s 30-watt USB-C power adapter or any other USB-C charger of at least 30 watts compatible with the USB-C Power Delivery specification.

With those conditions met, your phone will go from dead to fifty percent battery in around 30 minutes. The charging speed decreases past the fifty percent mark and slows significantly after eighty percent to protect battery health.

Apple’s support document warns that the fast-charging feature “might not work in conditions that are too cold or too hot.”
