Gurman: 32-inch iMac in 2024, 42-inch model slated for a 2027 release

Apple could release a 32-inch iMac in 2024 and is allegedly working on an even bigger all-in-one desktop computer for a tentative 2027 release.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has learned some details about bigger-screened iMacs, saying a 32-inch model could arrive before the end of 2024.

Meanwhile, customers who don’t need a bigger screen should brace themselves for 24-inch models with Apple’s M3 chips in late 2023 or early 2024.

Apple working on 32-inch and 42-inch iMacs

As per the subscriber-only version of Gurman’s Power On newsletter for Bloomberg, a bigger-screened iMac is currently in the early stages of development, and the company is experimenting with multiple screen sizes, so much could change.

“The company is also conducting early work on an iMac with a screen over 30 inches, I’m told,” he noted in the previous newsletter. Gurman advises against expecting a 32-inch iMac soon, saying Apple is looking to release it before the end of 2024 or some point in 2025.

Making the case for a massive iMac

Apple currently sells 24-inch iMacs powered by the M1 chip, released in April 2021. It had previously discontinued the 27-inch Intel-based model and the iMac Pro, which also featured a 27-inch LCD panel.

But wouldn’t a 32-inch iMac be overkill? No, people prefer their screens big. We first saw this trend with TVs, and then smartphones, tablets and computer monitors.

If Apple shrinks the bezels like with the 24-inch M1 iMac, the whole thing could be similar in size to the discontinued 27-inch model. A 32-inch iMac would be geared at creative pros because this screen size would be perfect for a 6K Retina resolution.

By comparison, the discontinued 27-incher had a 5K display. The Pro Display XDR, Apple’s external monitor, has a 32-inch panel with 6K resolution. The Studio Display measures 27 inches diagonally and has a 5K Retina panel.

Bigger iPhones and iPads also in the works

A 32-inch iMac isn’t the only device to potentially get a bigger screen—Gurman notes that Apple could release a 42-inch iMac in 2027. Furthermore, Apple’s rumored to blow up the screen on the iPhone 16 Pros to 6.9 inches and is reportedly testing iPad Pros with 15-inch screens and beyond.
