Brilliant flowchart advises how to prepare your iOS 14, 15, or 16 device for jailbreak eligibility

So you’ve heard about the Odyssey Team’s upcoming Cheyote jailbreak for iOS & iPadOS 15.0-15.1.1, but now you’re wondering what you should do with those device(s) you still have running iOS or iPadOS 14, or perhaps they’re running a newer version of iOS or iPadOS 15, or even iOS or iPadOS 16 beta for that matter. What should you do next?

While the golden rule that we reiterate religiously here at iDownloadBlog is for prospective jailbreakers to keep their device(s) at the lowest firmware whenever possible for the sake of jailbreak eligibility, the one and only time we can bend that rule is when we know there’s a looming jailbreak release and a newer firmware will be supported.

Since there’s a lot of confusion on the matter of what options prospective jailbreakers have with respect to what firmware they’re running, it seemed like a very good time to echo a helpful flowchart Tweeted by Havoc repository customer experience lead @aaronp613 this evening. Here’s a closer look at that flowchart:

Depending on what version of iOS or iPadOS you’re currently running, there may be certain actions you will want to take to preserve or enhance your jailbreak eligibility. Here’s the gist of things:

  • If you’re unjailbroken on iOS or iPadOS 14.8.1 or below, then we recommend staying where you are. On the other hand, the Odyssey Team will investigate the possibility of adding iOS & iPadOS 15.2-15.4.1 support in the future, but this isn’t a promise or a guarantee. You have the option of using the DelayOTA update method to get to iOS or iPadOS 15.4.1 until August 13th if you want to make that gamble, but you do so at your own risk and forfeit jailbreak eligibility if a jailbreak for iOS & iPadOS 14.8.1 and below comes out.
  • If you are jailbroken on iOS or iPadOS 14.8.1 or below, and have an A13 or newer device, then what you do next depends on whether you saved blobs for iOS or iPadOS 15.4-15.4.1 or not. If you did, then you can use futurerestore if a jailbreak comes out for those firmware versions. If you didn’t save blobs, then you can use the DelayOTA method to get to iOS or iPadOS 15.4.1 until August 13th if you want to make that gamble, but there’s no guarantee you’ll see a jailbreak for iOS or iPadOS 15.4.1.
  • If you are jailbroken on iOS or iPadOS 14.8.1 or below, and you don’t have an A13 or newer device, then what you do next depends on whether you saved blobs for iOS or iPadOS 15.0-15.1.1 or not.
  • If you are using iOS or iPadOS 15.0-15.1.1, regardless of the type of device, then you should stay where you are and do nothing until the Cheyote jailbreak launches.
  • If you are using iOS or iPadOS 15.2-15.4, regardless of the type of device, then we recommend staying where you are. On the other hand, the Odyssey Team will investigate the possibility of adding iOS & iPadOS 15.2-15.4.1 support in the future, but this isn’t a promise or a guarantee. You have the option of using the DelayOTA update method to get to iOS or iPadOS 15.4.1 until August 13th if you want to make that gamble, but you do so at your own risk and forfeit jailbreak eligibility if a jailbreak for iOS & iPadOS 15.2-15.4 comes out.
  • If you are using iOS or iPadOS 15.5-16.x, regardless of the type of device, then we recommend staying on or getting to iOS or iPadOS 15.5 as soon as you can. It’s possible to downgrade from iOS or iPadOS 16 beta to iOS or iPadOS 15.5. at the time of this writing. There’s no news of anyone working on a jailbreak for iOS or iPadOS 15.5 yet, but there’s a greater likelihood of one being release for this firmware than for iOS or iPadOS 16.x.

The flow chart is generally correct in most instances; however, we advise our readers to decide for themselves if losing their current jailbreak or gambling with jailbreak eligibility in the future is worth it. Currently, the only certain jailbreak release is going to be for iOS & iPadOS 15.0-15.1.1, but it’s worth noting that security researcher Linus Henze plans to demo Fugu15 with support for up to iOS & iPadOS 15.4.1 in October. No one knows yet if Henze plans to release this publicly.
