Review: Woolnut’s premium Leather Folio iPad Pro

This year I took the plunge and upgrade to the 2021 M1 iPad Pro 12.9”. I also tossed in the Magic Keyboard. Now, left holding an expensive kit, I was looking around for an equally stunning case to keep it all tidy. The Woolnut Leather Folio for iPad Pro is the only high quality case that matched Apple’s craftsmanship.

Woolnut Leather Folio for iPad Pro

Generally, I just let my iPad bang around in my laptop bag, because my TUMI has a separate laptop/tablet section. I also sometimes keep it in a simple sleeve. I only mention the brand of the bag to say that the Woolnut Folio holds its own against other quality brands in a similar space.

This is the first time I own the Apple Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro, but not the first time I’ve owned the largest iPad. I feel like the Magic Keyboard case is made of a material that is very likely to show imperfections, all the more so if you were risk averse enough to buy the white version. Consequently, I was looking for a sleeve-like case, but one that would hold the iPad and the Magic Keyboard. I don’t want to have one, but not the other and I didn’t want to store my iPad and keyboard separately.

The Woolnut Leather Folio for iPad Pro is just large enough to hold and iPad Pro, inside the Magic Keyboard, and have a nice slot for Apple Pencil. It’s a perfect package for keeping everything in one spot and the luxury matches Apple quality.

Specially picked materials make the difference. The full grain Scandinavian leather is soft to the touch. “Supple” is cliched, but completely accurate when describing the feel. It even smells incredible, which you’d expect in a leather of this cost. This is combined with 100% natural wool felt from a 120+ year old German wool manufacturer. The YKK EXCELLA metal zipper brings the whole thing together. The sturdy zipper makes the folio extremely simple to open and close quickly. A tasteful and small “Woolnut” logo is stamped on one side.

Important to note, Apple Pencil will fit in the pen holder on top of the folio or there is enough room between the zipper and iPad to have it charge magnetically while stored. As shown below, note the Apple Pencil holder to the left and the it actually charging in place. This larger Woolnut logo is no longer used on the product, instead just a simple “Woolnut” text is currently added on one side of the folio.

When traveling back and forth to work in this dynamic, ever changing WFH-and-office split work life, I utilize the folio regularly. It has formed well around the iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard. Sometimes, I utilized the folio to tote just my Magic Trackpad and MacBook external Magic Keyboard. It makes for a perfect accessory pouch, when I don’t need to carry my iPad around.

Conclusion

The Leather Folio is worth the price of admission 122.50 Euro (142.84USD, at time of publication). No, I didn’t get paid for my review, although I did reach out to Woolnut to ask for a sample unit and they obliged.

It’s a “yes,” as I mentioned above. The ability to carry the iPad Pro, Magic Keyboard, and Apple Pencil, with room to charge it, is a huge win. Combine this functionality with quality leather, wool, and a premium zipper. It makes it a simple recommendation.

Personally, I’m a picky and budget conscious spender, but I’m also willing to pay for quality. While the price point is not for every day shoppers, neither is spending $1,450 before tax for an iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard… over $1,550 if you toss in a second generation Apple Pencil. In my mind, if you are already willing to pay more than the cost of a MacBook Pro for an iPad Pro setup, then spending the extra money on this quality folio is well in your means and an elegant way to keep your expensive investment secure.

Woolnut’s Leather Folio is available in cognac, black, and green.

It also pairs incredibly well with the Woolnut MacBook Pro sleeve, which I also reviewed in an earlier post. Currently, they have a AirPods Max case that is available for pre-order at a discount.
