A leaker gives us the first look at Apple’s smaller, cheaper HomePod mini

Ahead of the Apple event scheduled at 10am PT today, prominent leaker Evan Blass has shared press images of what he claims is Apple’s upcoming $99 HomePod mini.

According to Blass, the images represent Apple’s smaller Siri-driven speaker and it looks to have adopted  a spherical design, as opposed to the cylindrical appearance of the regular $250 HomePod. Both Space Gray and White designs are represented on the images.

According to the rumor-mill, the smaller speaker will use Apple’s U1 chip for spatial awareness and accurate indoor positioning, tracking the user’s location as they walk around the house. The feature will require an U1-enabled device like one of the iPhone 11 or Apple Watch Series 6.

Other rumored features include half the height of the original mode, Apple’s S5 chip from the latest Apple Watch and more. It’s expected to start shipping next month.
