The all-new, redesigned iPad Air adds the design introduced by the iPad Pro, and brings with it even more powerful specs.
Apple has officially unveiled the new iPad Air, which boasts a design with minimized bezels similar to the iPad Pro. It comes in a variety of colors, and features a squared-off design as well. The narrow-border design is an “all-screen design”. Sky blue, green, rose gold, silver, and space gray are the color options.
The new display measures in at 10.99 inches, with 2360×1640 resolution, full lamination, True Tone, and an anti-glare coating. And, as expected, Touch ID has been shifted from the standard Home button. It’s now present in the top button, integrated into the button. It’s the smallest version of Touch ID to date, but it’s still just as fast as the previous generation. It relies on a sapphire crystal lens, which can more accurately capture a fingerprint.
The new iPad Air features a new chip under the hood, which will boost overall performance. That is the A14 Bionic. According to Apple, it’s the most powerful processor the company has built to date. It’s built on the 5nm process technology. It has 11.8 billion transistors. That’s an increase of nearly 40% over the 7nm processor. This increases power efficiency and performance.
It has a 6-core CPU, with a 40% increase in performance over the last iPad Air model. The 4-core design for graphics performance is a 30% increase. It also boasts a much faster neural engine, doubling the number of cores to a 16-core engine. It’s capable of executing 11 trillion operations per second. It ups the performance up to 2X over the previous iPad Air model.
The redesigned iPad Air also features USB-C with up to 5Gb/s transfer speeds. It provides access to new accessories, including monitors up to 4K. It has cameras on the front and back. A 7MP on the front, with improved 1080p capture, and HDR support. Meanwhile, on the back there is a 12MP camera from the iPad Pro. It has a larger aperture. It features improved video stabilization and much more.
The speakers have been redesigned, with stereo audio in landscape mode.
The new iPad Air works with the Apple Pencil, which attaches to the side for pairing and charging. It works with the Magic Keyboard as well.
It starts at $599, and it launches in October.
