iPhone SE (2020) unboxing and color comparison: White vs. Black vs. PRODUCT(RED)

Apple’s new $399 iPhone SE smartphone landed last Friday as its most powerful inexpensive handset, with reviewers and reports from early adopters suggesting that the Cupertino tech giant potentially has a massive hit on its hands. With that in mind, we thought we’d compare each color of the new handset and, of course, film the entire unboxing experience.

iPhone SE color shootout

The new iPhone SE starts at just $399 and comes in three colorways — Black, White and (PRODUCT)RED — and all three come with an all-black front that looks just great (I’ve never been a huge fan of white iPhone fronts anyway).

The deep Black option is somewhat similar to the matte black iPhone 7. The White variant isn’t just any ordinary white finish you may be expecting. Rather, the iPhone SE in White has that cool pearly sheen to it which is hard to see on the video (it resembles the white iPhone X).

PRODUCT(RED) from day one

Interestingly, that brilliant PRODUCT(RED) variant is available from day one rather than six moths later as was the case with prior iPhones. In the past, Apple used PRODUCT(RED) to revitalize slowing iPhone sales mid-cycle, but now it seems they’ve abandoned that strategy.

The iPhone SE in Silver looks much better in person than on photos

I’m glad they have because red is my favorite color and I’m not sure which stinks more, having to wait six months before Apple treats its most loyal fans to the PRODUCT(RED) option or forcing myself to purchase a handset in a color that isn’t my primary choice.

You can now get a red iPhone on day one, not 6+ months later

If you’re a red iPhone guy like yours truly, you may be pleased to learn that Apple is sharing a portion of proceeds for all iPhone SE (PRODUCT)RED purchases with the newly established COVID-19 Response and HIV/AIDS grants over at the Global Fund.

The iPhone SE in Black is as dramatic as black is

Global Fund’s COVID-19 Response provides funding to countries in need of PPE, diagnostics treatment, lab equipment, public safety communications, supply chain support and more. As for the HIV/AIDS grants, these provide testing, counseling, treatment and prevention programs with a specific focus on eliminating transmission of the virus from mothers to their babies.
