Apple designed iOS’ Home screen such that it would be easy to interact with. Fingertip-sized application and folder icons are accompanied by distinguishable name labels, and the permanent row of app icons that we call the Dock sports its own unique background to help it stand out from everything else.
While there really isn’t anything wrong with the stock iOS Home screen setup, the fact remains that jailbreakers are always searching for ways to personalize it. With that in mind, minimalists are likely to appreciate a newly released and free jailbreak tweak dubbed HideSurplus by iOS developer 8a1wkar.
As the name suggests, HideSurplus provides users with a way to hide superfluous user interface elements from the Home screen. The tweak supports hiding app icon labels, folder icon labels, and the Dock’s infamous background. The screenshot example above depicts what the Home screen looks like with these items hidden.
Once installed, a dedicated preference pane finds its way into your Settings app where you can configure the tweak to your liking:
Here, you can:
- Toggle app icon labels on or off
- Toggle folder icon labels on or off
- Toggle the Dock’s background on or off
The developer includes a Respring button at the bottom of the preference pane to help you save any changes you make to the settings.
Albeit not the most robust jailbreak tweak to be released in recent memory, HideSurplus is short, sweet, and to the point for anyone who might fancy a minimalist-friendly Home screen.
