At CES 2020, LG said its 2018 and newer TVs would soon get the Apple TV app. Tuesday, the Korean electronics maker announced that Apple’s software started to roll out to select 2019 TVs, with older models manufactured in 2018 getting the app “later this year”.
The Apple TV app is now available on LG’s compatible webOS-powered 2019 smart TVs sold in the United States and more than 80 other countries. The company already introduced its 2020 smart TVs with the Apple TV app at CES last month.
The company said:
LG TV customers can now enjoy Apple TV in addition to AirPlay 2 and HomeKit on all of LG’s 2019 OLED TVs, NanoCell TVs (series SM9X and SM8X) and later this month, the Apple TV app will roll out on select UHD TVs (series UM7X and UM6X). The Apple TV app and Apple TV+ will be available on 2020 TVs at launch and on LG’s 2018 TVs later this year via an over-the-air firmware upgrade.
At CES 2019, LG and rival makers including Samsung, Sony and Vizio announced a surprise partnership with Apple that saw their television sets pick up AirPlay 2 compatibility ahead of the Apple TV+ debut in November 2019. However, Samsung reached an exclusivity agreement with Apple because it was first to bring the Apple TV app to its smart TVs.
Now that LG and others have introduced (or are planning to roll out) the Apple TV app on their compatible TV products, customers will be able to access their purchased iTunes content as well as subscribe to supported streaming services (Apple TV Channels) and enjoy Apple TV+ in Dolby Vision right on their LG television, no Apple device required whatsoever.
“LG was an early adopter of Dolby technology and its latest TVs continue to support Dolby Vision, offering users the most immersive viewing experience with truly vivid colors, greater depth and stunningly realistic sound,” the company noted in the press release.
LG’s 2019 models also support Apple’s AirPlay 2 and HomeKit technologies out of the box.
