Amidst AirPods Pro shortages, Apple reportedly doubles production

AirPods ProLast year holiday buyers scrambled to find the original AirPods in stock at retail stores and online retailers. This year it looks 2019 is going to be a repeat: folks looking to pick up AirPods Pro for the people on their holiday lists are already running into long waits for the hot accessory. A new report from Asia says that Apple is doubling production of the popular earbuds to keep up with demand.

Since they debuted in October, the $249 AirPods Pro have been a hot item – lots of folks with original AirPods are looking to upgrade to the noise-cancelling models, and many more folks are looking to lay their hands on the new ones, since they’re the first AirPods with flexible silicone tips for a custom ear fit, active noise cancellation, and water resistance.

Up until recently Apple was able to keep up with demand, but now we’re squarely in the holiday rush and there are already shortages. When iDB checked on Wednesday morning, for example, AirPods Pro deliveries placed on Apple’s web site weren’t expected to be delivered until after Christmas. Availability in retail stores and at other online retailers varies.

Nikkei Asian Review reports that Apple is bringing on new suppliers to meet demand for the new AirPods Pro, doubling production from 1 million units to 2 million units per month.
