Apple TV+ gets high marks for 4K video quality

Apple TV+ is getting plaudits for the quality of its 4K video streaming from FlatpanelsHD editor in chief Rasmus Larsen. In a recent forum post. Larsen said that Apple TV+ has the highest 4K streaming quality they’ve seen in any service to date.

They measured the bitrates produced by streaming 4K versions of See, The Elephant Queen, Snoopy In Space, and Dickinson.

It’s worth pointing out that Apple TV+ uses variable bitrate with a quite wide span from low to top, so the console must run for some time to calculate the average bitrate.

Larsen complimented Apple on making 4K Dolby Vision the new default, and said that even Snoopy In Space sported high bitrates for a cartoon.

What they found was that See had the highest bitrate at 29 Mb/s average and 41 MB/s peak, while The Elephant Queen averaged around 26 Mb/s. By comparison, said Larsen, that’s about 1.5 – 2x the video bitrate of a typical HD Blu-ray Disc, or about half of a typical UHD Blu-ray disc.
