iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro models include new performance management system to reduce issues with aging batteries

Aging batteries have become a bit of a sticking point for Apple. The company tried to mitigate issues with older batteries, but that led to a big backlash and ultimately forced Apple to reduce the cost of its battery replacement program.

But now we’re in the back half of 2019 and the new iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro are out there in the world. So what’s next for Apple and batteries? According to a new support document (via 9to5Mac), the company has included a brand new “dynamic performance management system” in the new iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro series.

iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max power needs are dynamically monitored, and performance is managed so that it can address these needs in real time. The system is more advanced than previous iPhone battery and power management systems and allows your iPhone to reduce performance impacts from battery aging.

We know that the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and the iPhone X include new (at the time) power management hardware. And as noted in the original report, it sounds like Apple is taking what it learned from that hardware tweak and taking it even further.

However, the battery in the iPhone 11 series is still going to degrade over time and with usage. So, Apple’s support document takes a moment to note that performance can still be impacted down the road, no matter what power management tweaks it makes:

While performance impacts are reduced as much as possible, battery aging might still eventually lead to noticeable, possibly temporary, effects. Depending on the battery state and the tasks that your iPhone is handling, examples might include longer app launch times, lower frame rates, reduced wireless-data throughput, backlight dimming, or lower speaker volume.

An important change, and one that will hopefully actually offer real world results several months from now.
