Apple has joined the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) as a Platinum member.

CNCF is an open source Linux foundation project dedicated to making cloud native computing universal and sustainable. As part of Apple’s Platinum membership, the company’s Senior Engineering Manager Tom Doron has joined CNCF’s Governing Board.

The press release frames Apple as one of the pioneers in cloud native computing and one of the earlier adopters of container technology that the CNCF project is all about.

Chris Aniszczyk, the project’s head of technology:

Having a company with the experience and scale of Apple as an end user member is a huge testament to the vitality of cloud native computing for the future of infrastructure and application development. We’re thrilled to have the support of Apple and look forward to the future contributions to the broader cloud native project community.

CNCF was founded in 2015 by Google, CoreOS, Mesosphere, Red Hat, Twitter, Huawei, Intel, Cisco, IBM, Docker, Univa and VMware. Google also contributed the container cluster manager Kubernetes as a seed technology. In August 2018, the search giant said it was handing over operational control of the project to the community.

Apple contributed to several CNCF projects like Kubernetes, gRPC, Prometheus, Envoy Proxy and Vitess. It also hosted the FoundationDB Summit at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon last year.
