Review: Apple’s Smart Keyboard Folio for 2018 iPad Pro—depends on your preference

Apple has updated its Smart Keyboard alongside the new iPad Pro models for 2018. Taking user feedback seriously, the new iPad keyboard features a streamlined design that’s finally adjustable for added versatility while protecting both the front and the back of your tablet.

Like its predecessor, the new Smart Keyboard Folio lacks any wires or standard keyboard components and therefore does not need to be charged. It attaches magnetically with a satisfying “click” and is powered by Apple’s magnetic connector on the new iPad Pro.

The keys are still in woven fabric, making this new iPad keyboard from Apple resistant to water and other liquids, just like its predecessor. Unfortunately, there’s still no backlight on this thing and that, my friends, leaves a lot to be desired in terms of typing in the dark.

Something to consider when picking up the Folio: weight. The 11-inch version weighs in at 297 grams, up from the 245 grams of its predecessor. And if you opt for a 12.9-inch iPad Pro, the matching Smart Keyboard Folio comes in at 407 grams, a significant increase from the 340 grams for the regular Smart Keyboard for the previous-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

In other words, the 12.9-inch Smart Keyboard Folio is almost as heavy as the 11-inch iPad Pro itself, which comes in at 468 grams. You should definitely keep this in mind before purchasing it. TLDR: If you’re planning on toting around a 12.9-inch iPad Pro with a Smart Keyboard Folio, that will weigh about a kilogram, or 2.2 pounds.

Also, this new Apple keyboard is a bit on the expensive side.

The 11-inch model will set you back $179 (Apple, Amazon) and the 12.9-inch model is priced at $199 (Apple, Amazon). This keyboard cover works only on the new iPad Pro models introduced in 2018. Apple still sells the regular $159 Smart Keyboard for older iPad Pro generations.

Have you tried the new Folio yet? If so, what did you think of it?
