Is Motorola becoming a patent troll? Microsoft seems to think so

Last week, Apple lodged a complaint against Motorola with the European Commission regarding FRAND abuse. Apple believes that Motorola is not making its standards-essentials patents available under Fair, Reasonable, and Non Discriminatory terms.

The truth is, Apple's right. Motorola is asking the iPhone-maker for a ridiculous 2.25% of Apple's wireless device sales in exchange for the use of its industry-standard patents. Is Motorola becoming a patent troll? Microsoft seems to think so...

Poisoned iPhone factory workers release petition calling for reform

Apple has been in the media as of late for their manufacturing plant Foxconn. Many have profiled the plant as having terrible working conditions, but when we got an inside look last night, things didn't look as bad as previously depicted. The FLA is currently inside of Foxconn inspecting conditions and is poised to publish a report soon.

Today, at another China plant that manufacturers screens for the iPhone, two workers who claimed they were poisoned on the job have prompted a new petition...

What it actually costs Apple to build an iPhone

Asymco analyst Horace Dediu published an interesting report this morning that attempts to figure out what Apple pays to manufacture each iPhone. Over the last 5 years, the handset has quickly become Apple's largest money-maker.

Dediu uses a number of resources, including manufacturing information that has recently come to light thanks to ABC's "A Trip to the iFactory" documentary, to determine what Apple spends building each iPhone, from parts to shipping...

The Beatles release 27 classic ringtones on iTunes

I was lucky enough to grow up 15 minutes away from the Cavern Club in Liverpool. The club is best known as being the cradle of British pop music and is synonymous with the Beatles. Growing up in the area and having strong ties to Liverpool itself means I'm a big fan of the fab 4.

I was delighted when Apple added the full Beatles collection to the iTunes catalog back in November of 2010. Now, as per the 'New on iTunes' email I received in my inbox today, I'm delighted to say that Apple have added 27 ringtones from the hit compilation album '1'...

Workers claim Foxconn hid underage workers before FLA inspection

After facing criticism from both the media and human rights organizations, Apple has opened up the doors to its manufacturing plants for the world to see. This has allowed the Fair Labor Association in to do an inspection, and ABC to do a report.

If you haven't seen ABC's "A Trip to the iFactory" yet, you should really watch it. The documentary actually doesn't make Foxconn, Apple's largest manufacturing partner, look as bad as the media has made them out to be. But were they hiding anything?

Gevey releases SIM unlock for iPhone 4S

Back in November, the Dev Team announced they had found a very promising iPhone 4S unlock, but there hasn't been any news on that front ever since. We've had an untethered jailbreak for A5 devices for a while, but the cherry on top would be to get a software unlock via UltraSn0w for the iPhone 4S.

While we're waiting for a software unlock, a few Chinese companies are working on a hardware unlock. We've recently heard about new comers who claimed having a SIM interposer unlock for the iPhone 4S – TPSIM and R-SIM – but we can't recommend those yet as we haven't been able to give them a try.

Today, Gevey, a familiar name to us, is releasing the Gevey Ultra S unlock for iPhone 4S...

Doctors to ‘prescribe’ smartphone apps to their patients

We've mentioned a few health related apps and peripherals in the past such as an ECG and a blood pressure monitor for your iDevice, but according to the Daily Telegraph, doctors in the UK are now being urged to prescribe smartphone apps to their patients in an attempt to reduce visits to health centers, ultimately putting the power of knowledge in the hands of the patient.

Andrew Lansley, the Health Secretary, has compiled a dossier of approximately 500 tools and apps which will be recommended by the National Health Service...

Steve Job’s life documented in a fascinating Facebook timeline [updated]

Since the passing of the late Steve Jobs, we've seen many tributes relating to the man behind Apple. Cult Of Mac have come across an extraordinary rendition of such a tribute.

It's a fascinating look into Job's life in none less than a Facebook timeline, documenting his life since the day he was born. As Killian Bell points out, the people behind this tribute must have put a heck of a lot of work into this.

Watch ABC’s documentary “A Trip to The iFactory”

Yesterday ABC aired a documentary called "A Trip to The iFactory" where they tried to depict the conditions Chinese workers at Foxconn have to live in.

We don't want to spoil it for you, but you're not going to learn much more than you already knew about Foxconn. However, it's still interesting to have a glimpse at where your iPhone and iPad are made...

Clear to-do app gets the HTML5 treatment, try it for free

Realmac Software's Clear to do application has gotten an enormous amount of media attention over the past few weeks. One publication said that Clear's innovative, gesture-based UI "had the potential to change how we use our devices."

But if you haven't had the chance to try the app out, then it may be hard for you to see what all of the fuss is about. Luckily, developer Evan You has created an HTML5 replica of the Clear application so folks can give it a free test drive...

Five addictive iOS games on my iPhone right now

I'm not a massive gamer, I leave that to my son. However I do like the odd iOS game thanks to the fact you can pick it up and play pretty much anywhere you want. Unfortunately some of these little games are addictive as hell and take up way too much of my work time.
