OMG! Sega Bringing Sonic CD to iOS!

Those of us old enough to remember the Sega CD, or Mega CD (depending on where you happen to live), will readily admit that it holds a special place in our hearts. The Sega CD was arguably ahead of its time, and eventually died off with the arrival of competing products from Nintendo and Sony, not to mention Sega’s own Saturn.

Before it was killed, the Sega CD did survive long enough to give us one of the better Sonic games to come to any platform since the original release.

With that in mind, I can perhaps be forgiven for squealing like a schoolgirl when I say that Sega is bringing Sonic CD to iOS…

Not only is Sonic CD coming to our favorite mobile platform, but it’s also getting a touch-specific makeover, thanks to a clever independent developer who, it seems, did all the hard work on a conversion SDK. Details are sketchy, but the developer, Christian Whitehead, may have received a bit of love from Sega as a result of his Retro Engine.

Check out the video Whitehead released a couple of years ago showing his hard work, and we can only imagine how much better it is now!

I defy anyone who played the original to not get at least a little excited by the prospect of getting their hands on that!

Sega has also provided a teaser trailer to really get the juices flowing. The only bad news? We have to wait until Christmas to play it.

Are you old enough to remember Sonic CD? What other games would you like to see ported to iOS using the Retro Engine?
