Apple announces new $329 9.7-inch iPad, replacing iPad Air 2 & launching this Friday

By , Mar 21, 2017

Aside from announcing a beautiful new (PRODUCT)RED finish of the iPhone 7 series, Apple today unveiled a new, more affordable 9.7-inch iPad model, its most popular-sized tablet. Featuring a brighter 9.7-inch Retina display and Apple’s previous-generation 64-bit A9 chip, the 9.7-inch tablet will be available this Friday starting at $329 for the 32GB with Wi-Fi model, its most affordable price ever.

The Wi-Fi + Cellular model of the new 9.7-inch iPad is priced at $459.

Apple is simply calling the new device “iPad” rather than promote it under the iPad Pro moniker because it runs the A9 chip that powers the iPhone 6s and iPhone SE series, not its more powerful A9X counterpart driving both iPad Pro models.

The iPad Air 2 models that the new tablet replaces were powered by Apple’s A8X chip and cost $70 more, starting at $399. As of today, iPad Air 2 is no longer sold by Apple.

The new iPad lacks a fully laminated display and anti-reflective coating and is only available with 32 and 128 gigabytes of storage. It does not support Apple Pencil and lacks a Smart Connector. The 128GB Wi-Fi version is priced at $429, or $559 for the cellular edition with 128GB of storage.

Check out Apple’s Tech Specs webpage for the full specs.

“iPad is the world’s most popular tablet. Customers love the large, 9.7-inch display for everything from watching TV and movies, to surfing the web, making FaceTime calls, and enjoying photos, and now it is even more affordable,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.

“New customers and anyone looking to upgrade will love this new iPad for use at home, in school, and for work, with its gorgeous Retina display, our powerful A9 chip, and access to the more than 1.3 million apps designed specifically for it.”

The new iPad model comes in Silver, Gold and Space Gray finishes.

The device will be available to order beginning this Friday from apple.com. Shipments will commence next week, when the new device will arrive in Apple Stores and launch via select carriers and Apple Authorized Resellers in the United States and more than 20 countries and regions, including Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Denmark, India, Mexico, Norway, Russia, Turkey and other countries and regions will follow in April. Brazil, Taiwan and other countries and regions will follow in May.

Apple store also has a 128GB option for this new one.

  • For real it’s called “iPad”? Did Apple not learn from “The New iPad”?! You know, the old New iPad, that makes no sense?

Also, there’s leaking HTML under one of the images

    • EimaiNintzas

      who cares about the name?

      • Quite a lot of people I imagine. Would you be persuaded to by something if it were called “iPhone Boring”?

      • EimaiNintzas

sure, as long as i am able to pay it, i dont care if it is air 3, new ipad or ipad. Your example is too naive and would never be the case. People nowadays research before purchases, let alone when paying such a big amount of money.

Hmm… here in Italy 90% of people I know didn’t even know about the existence of the 3D Touch feature on their iPhone or about the existence of an SE model, they just buy the latest apple product for fashion. Research before purchase is for “above average” users here

      • EimaiNintzas

We greeks love Italy no matter what! I will come back to Firenze even though 3d touch is still unknown! Ciao

      • Giacomo Castellucci

Greece is so beautiful too, been there a couple years ago. Happy that you liked Italy, you’re very welcome here 🙂

“People nowadays research before purchases, let alone when paying such a big amount of money.”

LMAO!!! No they don’t, I’m pretty sure of that.

I can’t exactly recall what brick and mortar it was (maybe Best Buy) that had such a huge returns rate of HP and Kindles tablets at one point because people kept thinking they were “just like the iPad.” That alone should say how much “research” people make before paying a big amount of money.

Hell, people don’t even know about 3D Touch, Night Shift, or even the accessibility options in the settings menu, so can we really say people research their info before buying??

      • EimaiNintzas

World is larger than USA my friend 🙂

      • Blip dude

What makes you believe this is only a USA problem?? Trash and stupidity comes from all parts of the world my friend : )

      • Giacomo Castellucci

In my opinion if a product has no specific name it’s more difficult to sell after a few years.
For example if you want to buy an iPad and you don’t know apple very well you certainly know the iPad 3 is better than the 2 because it has a higher number, but you don’t know the difference between an iPad Air 2 and an iPad march 2017 model unless you go look for it on the web.
This happened with the iPhone SE, people were confused: is it better that the iPhone 6? What’s the difference with the 6S? And so on

Any idea if ram is 2 gb?

  • Felipe Queiroz Drumond

No real improvements for iPad Mini. Apple must be kidding.

    • White Michael Jackson

Damn I waiting for something to happen with the iPad Mini.

      • 5723alex .

You got it. The iPad Mini 4 is dead just like the Air 2.

      • Felipe Queiroz Drumond

I was expecting something like a new iPad Mini Pro (7.9″) and I definitely not buying an iPad Mini 4!!!

    • Jacobo Ruiz

Remember the innovator died a few years ago…

  • Will Maitner

They had me until they mentioned the screen wasn’t laminated.. Even the mini 4 is laminated..

    • Jbbbb

They are obviously clearing up leftover stock of Ipad Air 1’s main components (case, lcd and battery) and also clearing up leftover stock of A9 processors, this Ipad is like the turkey curry the day after Christmas lol

  • Peter

For me its great news get a cheap new ipad “im onboard”, right now i only have an old ipad2 wifi, so for me its a big upgrade

  • M_Hawke

Looks like Apple is continuing with introducing products with lower price points to get new customers in their base.

Why do you think they removed the anti-reflective coating and fully laminated display features for this new iPad? Cost cutting measures?
