Last week, I whined about Google dragging its feet when it comes to implementing support for important iOS features, like 3D Touch, in apps such as Gmail. Other iPhone and iPad apps from Google have been more aggressive in adopting 3D Touch features, including Maps. In the latest update, Google Maps was bumped to version 4.28 and now allows users who have an iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus to press places on the map to get quicker access to popular actions.

Previewing a place within Google Maps with 3D Touch pulls up an overlay with shortcuts to actions like getting directions, calling a place, opening its homepage in a browser and a Share Location action that brings up iOS’s multi-purpose share sheet.

Aside from 3D Touch place previews, this edition of Google Maps also allows you to quickly access addresses in your clipboard while using the search feature.

Download Google Maps from App Store.

Not working on iPhone 6s on the latest version!

  • Ben Roberts

this feature is not working. where did you get those screen shots? Can you provide more information about this?

    • Agneev Mukherjee

Are you jailbroken by any chance?

      • Ben Roberts

Nope, not jailbroken. Running iOS beta 10.3

Funny enough the feature is actually working now. I turned my phone off and then back on. The 3d touch feature is quite useful.

However this continues to be my biggest complaint about Google. They slowly roll out features to people even though they announce new features in update notes. I understand that they are updating billions of devices around the world but a software update with new features should happen instantly on device. Not through a server side update days or even weeks later.

So a restart fixed it, I’m gonna try it now…

Thanks! It works after a restart!

    • Those screenies were grabbed on my iPhone 7+.

Try force-quitting the app, then relaunch and 3D Touch should work. You must press a place’s name on the map to pull up the info overlay.
