New report says iPhone 8 will feature curved OLED display, new sensing tech

iPhone 7 plus back large camera

All iPhone 8 models will feature curved OLED displays, reports The Korea Herald. Citing sources familiar with the plans, the outlet says Apple has placed large orders with Samsung Display for plastic (not glass) OLED panels—similar to those used on the Galaxy S7 Edge—to use in its next handset.

The source also said the device may feature new sensing tech, stating “the upcoming iPhone may use new sensing technology, which enables the phone to respond when users touch any side of the device.” It may, however, decide not to use the tech, they added without providing any additional details.

After several quarters of struggling iPhone sales, analysts expect Apple’s 2017 handset to be a significant upgrade. Rumors thus far have suggested it will include an edge-to-edge, bezel-free display with no physical Home button, wireless charging, and 3 standalone models with differing feature sets.

people probably will like curved screen but personally I’m a little skeptic ..

    • Diego Milano

I never found this curved panels trend interesting at all.

      • Chris Owen

Me neither. I just can’t imagine a curved display making my experience any better, in fact I think it would hinder me more than anything. But that’s just my opinion.

      • Diego Milano

That makes the two of us already then.

      • Chris Owen

Yeah Apple almost always finds the best way to do something.

      • The King

I have the Edge 7, and the curve has no significant difference to my usage of the phone. Their is a feature that makes the curve on the left or right side of it useful, but I find it to be “meh” at best. I have it disabled.

      • Me too another reason is that you have to keep extra care on the phone and you cant keep it in you pocket

      • Diego Milano

What would prevent you from keeping a somewhat curved-display device inside your pocket anyway? That sounds odd.
I still remember the iPhone 3GS was exceptionally comfortable in your hand because of its curved back design, and I had no issues keeping it inside my pocket.

  • Newgunnerr

So it will JUST be screen on the front side? Wow

  • Jayy

The only thing negative about curved screens are cases fit weird.

    • Diego Milano

Well case makers would just need to make new ones from scratch, in a sense that’s what also keeps the market moving.

      • Jayy

Very true, but I don’t think there was ever a shortage of phone cases in terms of the market.

      • Diego Milano

There doesn’t have to be one, but Apple did have one of those for some colors of some of their silicone ones in the past.

    • Rowan09

I agree and they only make plastic screen protectors for them.

      • Jayy

I didn’t know that about the plastic screen protectors for curved phones, but I’m sure someone will come up with something for instance I have a smart glass screen protector on my iPhone.

      • Rowan09

Well they didn’t make any for the S7 Edge because it caused issues on the S6 Edge.

      • Jayy

        Ah okay I see!

      • Christopher Lim

UGH… I’m looking for plastic screen protectors for my iPhone and I can’t find one. Glass is too heavy… and raises the area around the home button…

      • Rowan09

Those are everywhere the Zagg protectors that doesn’t say glass are all plastic. You can get some cheap ones as well from Amazon and eBay.

  • Denver Morgan

I don’t believe this plastic screen no way.

  • Eliijah Moss

Again, why do people always believe what they see on the internet? Why don’t people do research before they make a comment/complaint? I would believe the leaked casings first before I believe words. Just saying.

    • Diego Milano

Whatever research you do over the Internet it’s still based on what you read, right? Even if you read your books it’s pretty much the same, the only difference is you read it everywhere and so it becomes an accepted statement. The truth is nobody knows for real unless you work for Apple; ultimately, we’ll know by September next year or so, as usual.

      • Eliijah Moss

Agreed. My statement was towards those who are gullible enough to believe anything and everything without even thinking on the subject. Yes. A book and this site may be similar, but you also have to think about the author of the book. It may just be a book, but the author is the one who wrote it, thus… the creator & original source that can be trusted.

  • Curved screen that mins like samsung galaxy s7 edge then I will like it. …

    • Diego Milano

I hope not, there’s no true usage in that in real life, just another gimmick. I for one have my phone usually right in front of me, so a curved display would add literally ZERO new functionality to my daily life. But that’s just me; I do hope Apple does it the right way instead of adding something iPhone does not need at all.

      • We can’t always predict the upcoming features of apple product. Hope we will enjoy the new features.

      • Diego Milano

That’s true, but like I said, looking at other brand’s curved panels, I don’t see any benefit if they are considering doing that. I keep my phone in front of me, not upside down or to a side, so the Galaxy Edge type of curved panel would be of zero benefit to me.

      • Ok, That’s true .. Tho Curved panel of Galaxy Edge shows most frequently used apps and the Tasks edge, where you can add shortcuts of things you do often with your phone.

      • Diego Milano

That’s my point, I would never use any of that, haha. Maybe it’s just me, I don’t know.

      • Yah!! I got your point. Appreciating your consciousness..

  • Diego Milano

It is only when sales start to decline that Apple decides to use some of the features they had kept away for a while. This is what competition creates, it makes you have to move quickly and get out of your comfort zone to try new things. I get it Apple always claims they want to do things the right way and their own way, but the ultimate truth is Apple is a profitable company with stocks and if you see numbers not growing as much as investors and executives want to, then you need to step up… quickly.

  • ok I really don’t understand why every site is saying iPhone 8. It’s going to be the 7s. This happened right after the 6 was released too. Everyone said iPhone 7 will have these features, apple will drop the s cycle etc. Why are we calling it the 8 and not the 7s?

    • n0ahcruz3

Maybe they will call it 7 pro, calling it iphone 8 doesn’t make any sense. My 2¢

      • They also thought it was going to be called the iPhone 6 and 6 Pro but it ended up being plus but who really knows. I guess it’s just all the clickbate (which definitely isn’t IDB) ads that say “Forget the iPhone 7 look at what apple has planned for the iPhone 8.”

  • Stephan Fry

What a crock of shit! The next iPhone a year away will be the iPhone 7S and look the same as the current one for sure. I have used a S7 Edge Plus extensively and curve screens are a joke. No ergonomic benefit and they distort the image at the edges. No benefit. The iPhone 8 wont be out for 2 years and even Apple employees don’t know what it will look like or what screen technology will be available in late 2018. Likely some form of OLED buy do you seriously think Apple would or could lock in what screens they will use in 2 years. Just moronic
