Is Apple going to rebrand OS X as ‘macOS’?

OS X, the desktop operating system which powers the Mac—“it’s what makes a Mac a Mac,” says Apple—does not fit into the company’s current OS naming scheme that has already given us watchOS, tvOS and iOS, but that might be about to change.

According to Portuguese-language site, developer Guilherme Rambo has discovered an interesting mention of ‘macOS’ in the “FUFlightViewController_macOS.nib” interface file within the FlightUtilities framework inside OS X code.

What makes this even more interesting is the fact that the name of that file has changed in the latest OS X El Capitan 10.11.4 software update, indicating the next major revision to the Mac operating system, OS X 10.12, might be marketed as ‘macOS’.

I think this change is logical and has been in the cards for some time now.

In addition to iOS 10, tvOS 10 and watchOS 3, Apple should also preview OS X 10.12 with Siri for Mac and other improvements at this summer’s WWDC.

With the tvOS, watchOS and iOS OC names, it would make a lot of sense to rebrand OS X as ‘macOS’ for the sake of consistency, don’t you think so?

  • YES! And the next version wouldl be “macOS 1”

  • Maybe they’re doing this because iOS 10 could be iOS X.

      7 hours late.

    • Jackson Grong

      Too confusing.

  • Manor

I think it makes sense because this summer Apple will release iOS 10 and it might confuse people having iOS 10 and OS X

    • That’s what I was thinking 🙂

      • Manor

LOL. Great minds think alike 🙂

    • Elias Chao

Even though I agree with you, we have to accept that most people call it “o s x” instead of “o s 10”.

      • Manor

Really? Most people I know usually say OS 10.

      • schoeberlt

Allthough I know that it us false, I always call it O S X 😀

  • Change the name, change IOS 10 and OSX interfaces! They have the hardware aspect down, now change up the software with a completely different interface, it’s well past time.

    • Well past time? iOS was revamped 3 years ago.

      • Albert

I think he means the layout of the springboard, not the icon structure of each native app.

  • :D

Well it would clear up the sex confusion when I tell people about the OS I use

    • Elias Chao

The “right” way to say it is “OS 10”, but yes most people call it OS-ex.

Please, Apple, bring phoneOS and tabletOS as well, and make the iPad the PC replacement you want it to be.

    • Fanboy 

YES, i ordered the 9.7 iPad Pro and my only complaint is going to be the software. They need to make some serious iPad-only software features

The OS X numbering system is kind of weird especially if you read it as OS ten (e.g. OS ten ten.twelve), which is how it originally came out. But MacOS begs the question, What does iOS mean? The OS X code names aren’t helpful once the release is out because most folks don’t want to have to remember whether Yosemite came before El Capitan, etc.

Are you asking ? Just in case

      iOS is iPhone Operating System

      But was originally iPhone OS

  • Rowan09

When I first saw the article and thought it was going to make a “hybrid” OS with a blend of IOS and OSX. While it’s not a huge deal for the iPhone, I always believed the iPad should be a cross between the 2 of them.

  • Jayy

I prefer OSX, please don’t change it Apple!

I’m probably the only person who still calls OS X, “Mac OS 10″… Just like Steve used to do… I remember that as soon as Lion dropped, they stopped adding the Mac part in front of OS X. Seeing as how everything is now “device type”OS, it would make sense for them to go with macOS.

    Debatable, indeed

  • noracuts

I’m ready for OS 11. Then they can rebrand it to whatever they want. I’d like to see something touchscreen friendly. iPad Pro can run it. But Macs will run it as well with touchscreen capability. OS X, ten , 10 is awesome but getting long in the tooth.

to many OS variations and numbers to keep track of
