RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad just hit the App Store. This popular construction and management videogame franchise that simulates amusement park originally management debuted on Windows PCs back in 1999.

RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 released on Windows more than a decade ago (it dropped on October 26, 2004) and today’s release has finally brought the classic strategy simulation title to the iOS platform.

The game costs $4.99 and is free of In-App Purchase schemes.

What’s this all about?

Ported over to iOS by Frontier Developments Ltd., RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 incorporates touch controls and includes all eighteen scenarios from the original PC game. Managing your own roller coaster park requires you to overcome day-to-day challenges such as changing weather patterns, demanding guests who always want more and more.

The happier your guests are, the more in-game revenue you’ll earn from them. And the more in-game money you have, the better as you’ll be able to advance your amusement parks with additional attractions, refreshment stands and other perks.

After you’ve played through all of the included missions, you can custom-design your own generic theme park without restriction in Sandbox mode, or take advantage of built-in designs such as Generic, Spooky, Western, Adventure and Sci-fi.

As you can see for yourself, graphics are top-notch.

  • Create your ultimate theme park in stunning 3D.
  • Let your imagination run free in Sandbox mode.
  • Play through all 18 scenarios from the original PC game.
  • Watch your guests react to your park as you try to make them happy.
  • Happy guests earn you more in-game money to build out your parks even more.
  • Design your parks using 5 fun themes: Generic, Spooky, Western, Adventure and Sci-fi.
  • See every spine tingling detail with fully controllable cameras.
  • Grab a front seat for the ride of your life with the jaw-dropping Coaster Cam.
  • Cope with challenging objectives, changing weather patterns and enjoy beautiful vistas, sunsets, moonlight and more.

In fact, developers proudly mention this in iTunes release notes, saying “With a new mobile-friendly UI, the creativity, depth and sophistication of the classic PC game is all here – with NO in-app purchases.”

  • finally a good game with no in-app, I’m sick of all kind of scams

  • now this brings back memories. I wonder what features are removed.. I can tell that the view distance is modified to not show and infinite background like the desktop version.

    • S.Curry

      Nothing is removed!!!!

To anyone who bought it: Is there any such option to make the camera like it was in RC 1 and 2 (a sort of static camera angle)? I read in the wikipedia article that there was an option to do so in the PC version of the game, just wondering if they ported it over.

The second game is where it’s at. I was obsessed and still play from time to time. I’ll download this to have it on my phone but never was a huge fan of the graphical style.

Amen to that, I have rct3 on my iphone now and it is way fun but im with you that rct2 would be even better

      • TotallySerious

Yeah i just bought it and can’t put it down! Although I will say that I enjoy the second game much more, that game is my childhood lol

    • Tom Spander

What you mean is an isometric camera and yes, it’s included.

      • TotallySerious

Ok thank you! I just found the option myself as you replied lol

No In-App Purchases whatsoever! This is a very good point

    • S.Curry

      They arent lying!!! Its awesomeeeeee

Sad when no in-app purchase is a selling/marketing point and even headline of an article about the game.

I wonder if someone will make mods for the ported game like they did with the PC version. Meaning customs supports, more buildings, more scenery, etc. etc. I really hope some of the PC community will come to help out the iOS community and make mods for it.

It’s great that they created such a nice iOS Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 app with a one time only purchase and no in-app purchases! Awesome.

I’ve bought the game yesterday night and started playing it immidiately. Unfortunately there are still a few small bugs and fixes that are needed.

    – Circus can’t be ‘opened’ (green flag) but only ‘tested’ and ‘closed’ flag work. I haven’t seen this issue with other attractions. If i find others i will let you know.
    – If you select ‘Settings’ and then press the ‘I’ (info) button the app closes
    – The text/information description is missing when you try to add employees (e.g. cleaners, security) to the park. I do see the ‘x’ and ‘v’ and when i press the ‘v’ i do see that i’ve hired employees.

    Not easy to operate:
    – It’s not easy to add a few paths after each other
    – When i start at the start point of a rollercoast to create my own coaster and somewhere in between to decide to also start building from the end point of the coaster i can’t easily connect the parts in between. In the end i chose a standard coaster layout.
    – It’s not quite clear (top view) where the entrance of a shop/eat/drink building are. I did get a notification in the game with a few shops that people weren’t able to order (the notification is great).

The developers already confirmed there are a few bugs in the (Dutch) version of the App. Overall i would advise others to buy this app when the small issues are resolved.

I’m using the latest iOS app (NL/Dutch user) from RollerCoast Tycoon3 on my iPad mini2 (retina) on iOS8.4.
