Apple Watch 1.0.1 OS update 003

Following its April 2015 launch, the first software update for the Apple Watch is now available for download through the companion Apple Watch app on your iPhone. Release notes for Apple Watch OS 1.0.1 cite several performance improvements related to Siri, third-party apps, activity tracking and more.

In addition, the software update delivers display support for new emoji characters and more than half a dozen new languages.

Based on web reports, a lot of people have had issues with the ‘Hey Siri’ feature on the Apple Watch not working consistently, failing to respond, working only half the time and what not. Thankfully, this update should see to that. Based on our early tests of Watch OS 1.0.1, ‘Hey Siri’ does activate more constantly than before.

From the list of changes, it would also seem that Apple has addressed much of the reported inaccuracies in fitness and activity measuring.

As noted by Kirk McElhearn, who put a Fitbit One and his Apple Watch through their paces, Apple’s device isn’t a very accurate fitness tracker as it often would not count brisk walking as exercise and would report calorie measurements all over the place for indoor workouts.

According to release notes, this update includes performance improvements and bug fixes, including the following:

  • Siri
  • Measuring stand activity
  • Calculating calories for indoor cycling and rowing workouts
  • Distance and pace during outdoor walk and run workouts
  • Accessibility
  • Third-party apps

It also enables display support for new emoji characters and additional language support for:

  • Brazilian Portuguese
  • Danish
  • Dutch
  • Swedish
  • Russian
  • Thai
  • Turkish

Those newly added languages very likely indicate in what countries the Apple Watch will launch next. Details of the security contents of the update should be added to this Apple support document in due time.

Apple Watch 1.0.1 OS update

To apply this update, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone with iOS 8.2, iOS 8.3 or iOS 8.4 beta. Then navigate to General > Software Update, where you should see the update prompt.

To install the software update, your Apple Watch must be in range of your iPhone, connected to its charger and charged at least 50 percent.

    • Victor

We’ve waited way too long for the apple watch 😀

      • Justin de Vreugd

So true i hope WWDC Will bring us good news

  • Fanboy 

Done 🙂 found it really weird that the new emojis werent showing correctly before this update.

  • Jamessmooth

Good! Siri was really slacking off for me. Only worked half the time.

    • Tavish

Has anyone tried Siri after the update? Does it seem more responsive when activating it either by button or voice?

      • Hey Siri seems much more reliable for me. Just like @jamessmooth:disqus noted, Hey Siri would work maybe 50% of the time for me. It now seems to be much more reliable

      • raulortiz318

Good to hear! I found for me the best way to have Hey Siri work is to speak in one continuous sentence with no pauses. So instead of Hey Siri – Pause – then say your request, just keep talking with no pause.

Hoping this update helps people out!

      • socrates

I’ve found that to be true as well.

      • raulortiz318

Cool! Yeah if anyone is having issues with Hey Siri definitely recommend trying that no pausing method.

    • I didn’t use the “Hey Siri” command much before the update, as I found it was easier to just press the Crown. Now I’ll try though. Did anyone else also have problems with Crown-enabled Siri though of it just cutting out before you could say anything?

      • Yes I did. Sometimes my screen would also stay blank and I wouldn’t be able to use Siri until I rebooted the watch.

      • Jamessmooth

Yup, that was my problem exactly. I hardly ever used the Hey Siri feature… mostly digital crown.

  • avd98

Thank god that now supports other languages other than just the basics!

  • Hussain Alsanona

This update pushed by Apple just because I received mine !

  • Tony Trenkle Jr.

Does it HAVE to be on its charger? Cause I hit the update button at work and its not doing anything, but the gears are still turning…so I hope that doesnt kill the battery…

    • f1ght3r

I think it’s just because their servers are super busy right now. I’m in the exact same situation lol

      • Tony Trenkle Jr.

Yeah…I wish I could cancel the download, but it doesnt appear I can.

    • Watch must be charging

      • Tony Trenkle Jr.

Hmm well is there a way to cancel the download? I tried restarting my phone and it still shows in progress.

      • iBanks

It’s not doing anything while the gear is spinning. Mine was spinning for some time now and had no impact on battery, once I stepped into my home, it then started showing the download progress. That was after my devices connected to wifi.

      • Tony Trenkle Jr.

ah ok gotcha. Actually I turned mine on airplane mode and that seemed to do that trick. But thanks!

  • Mark

    I just want my watch!

  • Chris Coleman

Just finished my update, Siri seems more stable and responsive and glances are loading a lot quicker plus swiping through them seems smoother. Also zooming into apps using the digital crown is more fluid.

    • peteo

How about 3rd party app loading?

      • Chris Coleman

A quick test is showing about 3 seconds average loading times for 3rd party apps, not bad in my opinion

  • Krikor

If you tap and hold an app icon they all start wiggling like on the iPhone. You can rearrange and delete apps

  • M L

Took a bit of time, 10-15 min to update but went flawlessly.

  • iPhoneWINS

    already damn

  • ProllyWild

Great speed increase for me. Everything loads faster

  • Julio

When putting it on the charger it says what percent it is charged to at that point (like the iPhones already do) instead of just saying “Charging.” Minor but a change.

  • Tony Trenkle Jr.

So I got home and had both Bluetooth and Wifi on and it won’t update. Gives me this:

  • My watch arrived today. Very impressed. Apple has reinvented the watch. Relatively seamless experience for me.

  • Gary le

it will be alot more convinient if the green workout app be in glances so why isnt Apple make it possible???

  • iPhoneWINS

Played with apple watch in real life the other day and immediately evident is that it is far too small.. even the bigger one is too small and the screen quality is lower than that of the iPhone 6+ so the screen is hard to read.. am sure it will not be till gen 3 that this device comes what it was supposed to be.

Has anyone noticed that on the “Modular” face it says “Local Weather” instead of the city that you are currently in?
