Apple today added a handful of new locations to the 3D Flyover feature in its iOS and OS X Maps applications. The new locations include Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Boise, Idaho in the United Sates, Venice, Italy, and other cities around the globe.

First introduced in Apple Maps when it launched in 2012, the Flyover feature allows users to take close-up, 3-dimensional looks at buildings, landmarks and various other areas of interest.

  • Baton Rouge, LA
  • Boise, ID
  • Cáceres, Spain
  • Clermont-Ferrand, France
  • Edinburgh, Scotland
  • Guadalajara, Mexico
  • Linz, Austria
  • Ponce, Puerto Rico
  • Rennes, France
  • Venice, Italy

Apple a month ago added 11 new Flyover locations including cities from Texas, Puerto Rico, Italy, Germany, France, England, Sweden, Denmark and Czech Republic. There are now more than 120 locations around the world with 3D Flyover support.

I cannot imagine this would happen anytime soon, especially with the way the Chinese government are so……protective.

Might have a better chance with Russia.

Yeah, Chinese gov and law is one of the reason. And, in China, iOS map are using AutoNavi map instead of Tom-tom which in U.S. . Fortunately, in iOS 8, there are already have 3D map in standard mode (not satellite mode) in almost all the cities in China (look like white 3D model).

Is it just me or does anyone else also not really care for the flyover feature? Even though where I live is supported, I never use it.

I think we all take it for what it is, a novelty feature that just makes the experience of exploring the world a little more convenient maybe.

Since they don’t have street view yet it’s helpful and it’s also nice for exploring as John said.
