AFVideo Cydia

The launch of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus brought autofocus ability to the stock Camera app while recording video. This was a feature that many iPhone users clamored for, and when it was finally unveiled with the iPhone 6, it was met with a positive response.

Unfortunately, video autofocus was to be exclusive to the newer devices, and wouldn’t be retroactively added to older devices like the iPhone 5s via iOS 8. But that all changed today when a new jailbreak tweak called AFVideo was released. This tweak brings video autofocus to older jailbroken devices running iOS 8.

After installing AFVideo, it begins working immediately. In fact, there are no options, settings, or app icons added post installation, so there’s nothing for users to configure.

I tested AFVideo on my jailbroken iPhone 5s, and was very impressed by what I found. Autofocus now works while shooting video very similar to how it does on the iPhone 6 Plus. It’s not quite as fast as it is on my 6 Plus, but it doesn’t lag too far behind according to my testing.

I actually held both devices side by side while recording a video. I then moved the phones around to adjust what I was capturing at the same time on both devices. The iPhone 6 Plus always seems to focus in first on each new object that I center the viewfinder on, but the 5s did an admirable job of keeping up.

So what’s the final consensus? I conclude that AFVideo—a free tweak on Cydia—is a must-have for anyone who takes video on a regular basis on their older iPhones. I’m not sure how it will impact battery life, if at all, but I could find no other potential downsides from using this tweak, and therefore recommend it.

Have you tried AFVideo? If so, what do you think?

Getting it right now! Never knew the iPhone 5S and older didn’t autofocus while recording…

    • QuarterSwede

It has manual focus (tapping on screen to focus) while recording it just doesn’t do it automatically as objects get closer or farther away.

  • HamptonWalley

This the first thing which would make me jailbrake my older iphone device.

    3rd…

Question: is there any tweak which enables 60 fps recording video on the 5s?

    • cameratweak 3 iirc

    • Guest

Slo-mo should do the trick. Enter 60 FPS in the settings. Anything higher will make the camera crash.

  • Vitor

    How it can be free?
we have scrappy tweaks paid and this great tweak is free.
    thank you Poomsmart

some Devs can afford making their wares free for the fame and eventual hope that their tweaks become a household name whilst the rest can’t.

It all depends on the dev himself/themselves/herself. No one knows their personal life better than them.

      • Some tweaks are also offered for free and then a premium version made too e.g SwipeSelection and Virtual Home…

Why can’t Apple just retrospectively add this to older devices that can support it? It’s a bit lame in my opinion.

    • Leslie B

Clearly Apple wants customers to believe they need to buy an iPhone 6 to get this feature.
I love my Apple stuff, but I wish they weren’t so f***ing greedy.

They have to please shareholders. Shareholders before loyal customers.

Looks great! Btw here’s a question: is 8.1 sluggish on 4s? I’m still on 7.1.2 and reluctant to update.

    • GuyWithTheThings

      I believe you can’t upgrade to iOS 8 on a 4S.

      • Norbi Whitney

        You believe wrong sir

    • BoardDWorld

Not sluggish, it’s very similar. Search YouTube for everythingapplepro. He has a comparison. Lack of memory is a problem though.

      • Ariel

Thanks, but thats for 8.0. I did update, but than downgraded back before it was too late. I want to know if 8.1 fixed 8.0’s problems.

      • TDD140

Yes, iOS 8.1 and up have fixed many problems that iOS 8.0 had, however there’s nothing wrong with being on iOS 7 because it has slightly better performance.

      • BoardDWorld

He did a comparative video for 8.1.1 vs 8.1 and then recently did another video comparing 8.1.2 vs 7.*? 7 requires less memory which is always a good thing. I gave up and just upgraded to a 5s.

      • Ariel

K, thanks guys I’ll be staying on 7! Hopefully new phone soon…

  • ‘Ariff

Anyone have any issues with iPhone 5? I’ve installed but it doesn’t seem to be working.

    • ‘Ariff

Nevermind I uninstalled, restarted my iPhone, and reinstalled and it works perfectly.

  • iKhalil

    Cool

  • hkgsulphate

they should allow this on the 5s…

  • Damn you Apple and your “let’s give all the new features exclusively to the new devices” mentality! If it works on older devices then don’t disable it!

  • Sandro Michailidis

Works great , here on the iPhone 4S
