Skype’s Qik gets optimized for iPhone 6, adds new video menu and holiday surprise

Qik, an ephemeral video messaging app for the iPhone by Microsoft-owned Skype, has received a refresh Wednesday. For starters, it takes full advantage of 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus screens while adding a new video menu.

It also improves how invitations by SMS are handled and includes a special holiday surprise in the form of a cool Easter egg which lets you shake your iPhone to enable snowflakes that fall down the screen.

Here’s that effect in action.

The new ^ menu is available in the app with options to delete your video, save it for later to the Camera roll or send it to another conversation.

Some users complained about their friends overlooking Qik invitations sent by SMS. Up until now, there was no way to resend an SMS invitation but now you can send it again if you want.

Just don’t spam your friends who couldn’t care less about Qik!

Qik 1.3 changelog:

  • New ^ menu lets you delete, save or send your message to another conversation.
  • Friend didn’t open the SMS invitation to Qik you sent? Now you can send it again.
  • Now optimized for iPhone 6 and 6+ screen sizes.
  • Plus, a special holiday surprise.

If you haven’t tried Qik yet, the app lets you record and share short video clips that automatically disappear after two weeks. Launched in October, Qik also lets you manually delete any sent clip at any time in a Snapchat-like fashion.

The app adds new messages to a chat that you can watch like a movie of sorts.

Qik is iPhone-only and requires iOS 7.0 or later.
