If you’ve ever listened to an episode of iDB’s Let’s Talk iOS podcast, you know that many of us struggle with how buggy iOS 7 is. We’ve noted on multiple occasions that some of us see our iPhones and iPads crash more than once per day, which is pathetic.

But there may be light at the end of this dark tunnel. Mashable has received an official comment from an Apple spokesperson that Apple is aware of a problem, which the site refers to as the “white/black screen of death,” and it has a fix coming a future update…

Here’s the text from the report:

“Since Apple released iOS 7, its completely revamped operating system for the iPhone, reviews have been mixed but mostly positive. However, a glitch that has quietly plagued iPhone users — the “white/black screen of death,” a bug that abruptly soft reboots the smartphone — will finally be addressed in a future iOS 7 update.

“We have a fix in an upcoming software update for a bug that can occasionally cause a home screen crash,” Apple spokesperson Trudy Muller told Mashable.”

While I’m sure users experience this type of crashing in different ways, I’ve noticed that every once in a while—usually while I’m switching between apps or scrolling through large pages in Safari—my iPhone will either auto-respring or completely restart itself.

The fix is expected to be included in the upcoming iOS 7.1 update, which is currently in its fourth beta. But of course, it’s also very possible that Apple could patch the issue by way of a minor update (like iOS 7.0.5.) if it wanted to correct the problem quickly.

How about you, does your iOS 7 device crash or respring itself?

  • Armando Ruiz

Got to be honest. I’ve never encountered that issue.

    • Sam Khan

It always happens on my iPad Air

      • WingsThree

Same here, 3 or 4 times a week, daily use. iPhone 5s less frequently, just occasionally.

      • Jackson Grong

My iPad Air crashes even 4-5 times a day, 90% of the times when using multitasking gestures.
My friend’s iPad didn’t turn on after one of this crashes, and he lost all his data! Just hope this doesn’t happed to me, my last backup is like 3 months old!

      • Kevin Osborne

So maybe back-up more often? 😛

  • Sam Khan

Wellp looks like 7.0.5 is on its way. Save your jailbreak boys and girls..

    • Andy

Seems to be more likely on 7.1, seeing as how it’s already in beta 4 now.

      • Sam Khan

i think 7.1 is still a month away. since its not fully cooked, Yet.

      • Andy

They never said the upcoming fix would be released early. It’s now nearing the end of January, so I wouldn’t be suprised if 7.1 was released early to mid March.

  • Ash

By crash what does it mean? I’ve experienced my 5S randomly respringing but I blame that on the fact that it’s jailbroken.

    • Dani Hayes

I’m on stock iOS 7 on my 5s and have only had to do a hard reboot once. The buttons were not responding. But I’ve never had a problem like the one the article is stating on my iPad 2 and 4S.

      • Ash

Never had that issue and nope I’ve had no issues with my iPad 2 either.

    • josojojo

Same over here. I have a 5s and it resprings occasionally.
I couldn’t figured it out and blamed a cydia tweak, but now I understand that it is a firmware problem (I am on 7.0.4).

Maybe this could be solved by a Cydia Patch, after ios 7.1 is released?

      • Ash

It happens to me in awkward times. For example using passbook to collect Subway point and my phone will respring whilst I’m at the till!

Personal problems aside, I am hoping that whatever the problem is (buggy iOS or jailbreak related), it’s fixed soon.

      • Ash

That’s if Evasion jailbreak isn’t patched for 7.1…

      • Adam

a cydia patch or patches to replicate ios updates would be amazing staying on 7.0.4 and then having all the benefits of 7.1 sounds great but who knows how possible this is, any devs in here is this possible

    • blastingbigairs

Do you use iCleaner once a week? Highly recommended if you are Jailbroken.

    • Adan

I would normally think that it would be because of a jailbreak, but it’s been happening before the jailbreak for iOS 7 was available

  • Gucciipad

Just experienced safari crashes on my iphone 5s

    • ✪ aidan harris ✪

This may happen to you if you have AppSync installed but I think there must be other reasons too since my iPad crashes an awful lot and does not have it installed…

      • Gucciipad

Before my jailbreak. A brand new iphone 5s. Fresh out of the box. The safari would just keep on crashing.

  • pokaprophet

They’re giving us more RAM in a software update?? Now that IS magical!!

    • Ash

It’s obviously a software bug. You’ll only be facing a laggy interface if you’re using something like an iPhone 4 as they’re holding on to the latest iOS barely

      • Wood1030

Not only the iPhone 4, which i have os a back-up tester (JB’d IOS 7), but my iPad 2 is also a notorious crasher, mostly due to low memory.
Safari app is the main culprit for my IPad crashing, it just bleeds memory right out, (thank god for ‘FreeRam7’)
To be honest, I’l settle for a little crash now and then rather than to give up my JB.
I’m staying on IOS 7.04, til the next stable JB comes along, however long that takes!

  • Zower

yup, experiencing crashes but not everyday though esp. on my my ipad mini.

  • 123bob

“But there may be light at the end of this dark tunnel.”

Maybe that light is a train!

  • Elvin Topalov

Hopefully they fix the iPad orientation lock bug too.):

    • Jackson Grong

I had this bug ever since iOS 5. :S They probably won’t fix it :/

  • madmaxmedia

Sounds good to me. I’ve never had my iPad 3 or iPhone 5 totally reboot. Just occasional crash to home screen, but didn’t feel it was happening more than iOS 6. But less crashing is always good-

  • Vitor

The only problem I had with my 5s was with Bioprotect tweak

I have installed and uninstalled the tweak several times, and the phone just blocks and buttons were not responding.
Most of the times was after a call

  • Alan Roberts

On my iPhone 5S safari crashes quite a lot. Also my phone has rebooted when I’m using it.

  • Jonathan

Its been happening when I open apps on my iPhone 5

  • Christian Mejía

No one on here is going to write an article about Apple flagships cube store braking?

  • jack

What about Safari tab crash on iPad

  • blastingbigairs

Rather have crashes (never had one myself) over no JB. Pass!!!

  • Tommy Gumbs

My iP5s does not have the crashing issue. However, my iPad Air is horrible. It crashes so often that I am waiting to jailbreak. I figured a future update might have a fix.

  • Adam

crashing on my 5s on a daily basis I can’t even remember when it happens it happens on so many different occasions atleast once a day sometimes upwards of 5

  • Matt

I’m just going to stick with my 7.1.4 until there will be some sort of jailbreak for 7.1

    • Abdl

      • Matt

Lol I knew that I was going to make a mistake somewhere.
        Thanks for correcting me 😀

  • Adan

Happens all the time on iPhone 5s and iPad air.

  • Brandon Miranda

No. It might have but since its jailbroken I just put it on a bad tweak. Lol

  • Joe Honse

I’ve seen a lot of these posts mentioning Safari. I can say I’ve never seen this behavior in ios 7 however I NEVER use Safari. I use Chrome exclusively. Sounds like a fix may simply be: don’t use Safari. Also, I can say I’ve not seen this on my families 4S, ipod 5th, ipad 2, ipad mini, iphone 5, or iphone 5C all running 7.0.4

  • butterfield

mmm, have an iPad mini retina and I have never crashed…either before or after jailbreaking…

  • Nicky 

Happend to my 5S i think about at least 6 times since ive got him from the release date. It is Jailbroken. I had more crashes with stock iOS7 then with my Jailbroken version. Last week i had the first Blue Screen of Death. Anyone else had this?

  • mahe

    Never happend on my iPhone5
But on my iPad mini retina it happend twice a day …
The funny fact is that since I jailbroke the iPad it only happens once in a while now, so about once a week or something like that

  • derick cruz

I know its a off topic question but i have this problem with five finger pinch gesture, when im trying to close an application the screen start to freeze, i have to hard reset it to reboot.. Now Im using activator as replacement but i would like to use the builtin gesture for ios7., thanks in advance

    Ipad 4, 64gb, wifi+3g, ios 7.0.4, JB

    • derick cruz

Is there a fix for this?

  • Norbi Whitney

Happened to me 5-6 times per week. I took my 5s into the store to get it looked and, and the genius “fixed” it…until about 2 days later when it started doing it again.

  • mehrab

Happens ALOT to me specially when multitasking between a lot of apps

  • Joe Benning

    And a fix for Evasi0n, of course…

  • Yujin

Mine crashes weekly only when I use touch id

  • mav3rick

…how buggy *the most advanced* iOS 7 is…

  • Alex-V

had those things on 7.0.3 but not on 7.0.4 …mmhh..who knows…btw…i got back no not jailbrake (dont want to buy more tweaks in cydia before ios 7.1 jailbreak is there)

  • Bongky Alexander

Happend to me, but after jailbroken my i5 never crash,

  • Sarah Bailey

So I definitely have this issue. My problem is whether this is Jailbreak related or not. I don’t remember it happening before jailbreaking. However, when it does happen, all my tweaks still work. Is that possible in safety mood? (in the past when safe mood occurred none of the tweaks worked until you removed the faulty tweak). I am running the following tweaks: Activator, Adblocker, Bitesms, Browserchanger, ccquick, dockshift, F.lux, Fancy, Ifile, Message customizer, Mobile terminal, NCAllOnly, Slide2Kill, Swipey, Tetherme, Translucent, and Winterboard. Would it be wise to rest and restore and then re-jailbreak, or should I wait for a software update? My problem with the latter is that if the exploits are patched then no jailbreak.

  • seadoc

I am done with Apple. Two iPad Airs with blue screen of death. What a joke Apple has become…

  • Random Guy

Its funny, how with time android became stable and iOS became so buggy. I get a few crashes a day, and iBooks doesn’t render PDF pages quickly.

Lucky i switched my phone to android. I wanted to have an iOS device so i upgraded my iPad 2 to 4. I’m really annoyed with apple not allowing aftermarket cables to be made, and i think they specifically designed a weak cable. I usually look after my tech, my iPod cable from 2005 still works, but the lightning connector cable broke in less than a year. Go figure… I am on holidays in Sochi Russia, and it will be hard to find an official cable here. Thanks Apple… I probably wont upgrade my tablet to another iOS device.

  • Andrei

Loads of reboots /white apple screens on the white 14gig wifi ‘Air’. Annoying as hell.

  • Tommy Gumbs

I am now on my third iPad air replacement. Unfortunately all three have the crashing issue. It’s to the point I don’t want the device anymore. I can use it for class or meeting because it has crashed in the middle of important stuff to many times now. Very disappointed.

  • Pato Londres

Hi, installed 7.1 on my iPad and now I get the constant reboots and the black with Apple screen, which I didn’t get before. So Apple has not fixed the problem

  • Truth Gun

Still not working right. My podcast app freezes immediately when opened.

  • Constant freezes on open with 7.1.1 on ipad3. I have to reboot several times to get it to work at all. Not only frustrating but downright upsetting. No one seems to have found the “cure”….read all the forums, tried all the approaches. Did not happen on ipad with earlier ios.

Apple, you really need to attend to this, and soon.
