new remote app

Although Apple posted a number of iOS 7-flavored app updates this week, there’s still one that I’m anxiously awaiting: the Remote app. I use it every day to control my Apple TV, and it’s very much in need of a UI overhaul.

Fortunately, it looks like I won’t have to wait much longer. A redesigned icon for the Remote app has been discovered in iTunes, suggesting that Apple may be putting the finishing touches on an iOS 7 update for the utility…

First discovered by a 9to5Mac reader, the new icon can be seen in iTunes version 11.1.2 during the process of adding a new remote. To see it for yourself, follow these steps (make sure that you’re on the latest version of iTunes):

  • Launch iTunes on your computer and the Remote app on your iOS device.
  • Make sure both are on Wi-Fi, and both have Home Sharing enabled.
  • In the Remote app, tap on the gear-like Settings icon in the top-right corner.
  • Select ‘Add an iTunes Library.’
  • In iTunes, tap the ‘Devices’ tab located to the left of the iTunes Store tab.

And that’s all there is to it. You should see the new Remote icon in the drop-down menu. Note that it is very different from the icon in the iOS app. As with other iOS 7 app updates, it’s flatter now, and has generous white spacing.

Of course, this in no way confirms that Remote is about to get a makeover. But it’s worth noting that last week, new icons for the iOS versions of GarageBand and iPhoto popped up in iCloud just a few days before they were updated.

In addition to Remote, Apple has yet to post iOS 7 updates for its iBooks and Find My Friends apps (am I missing any?). You’d think it would want to release them all at the same time, or at least close to each other, so stay tuned.

    • kenzie t

lol fine my friends, that’s a much better name

    • Matthew Cleveland

I agree. I die a little inside every time I use Find My Friends.

      • Patrick

    • omrishtam

why .app :/ ?… could just say Remote and iBooks….

      • klouud

Why not? .app denotes iOS over OSX. Why is that a big deal?

      • Falk M.

Actually no, because applications on OS X are named “App” (speaking of filenames here)

      • klouud

Well darn. You guys are right – I retract the .app part of my statement.

  • The iBooks app needs update. I use it regularly to read books and it isn’t much like a ios7 app. Btw anyone know any alternative ebook reader for iPad ?

    • Σαλαη αββας

For the iPad , yes there is alternative readers , but since it’s ios , iBooks is the best option

Interesting how you approached his question and then immediately disregarded it without the info he was seeking, lol.

Check out Marvin app (free for iPad, pay for iPhone). Absolutely the best ereader out there IMHO. Was looking for a replacement for obsolete Stanza reader. Marvin trounces clunky iBook hands down.

I am quite confused on dropping choice for upgrading my iDevices. which comes first, iPad 2 for iPad air or iphone 4s for 5s , since its too pricey to buy both of them at the same time.

While I think, 5s isnt a quite major upgrade for Photography, should I go with iPad Air instead?
    thanks for your advise 🙂

    • Σαλαη αββας

      iPad air

    • diggitydang

I’d say it depends on which you use most often! Good luck!

  • omrishtam

about time 😀 i hope they will bring some new features to it

They really need to update Remote. Of all of them, it looks the worst. Gradients, dark, and black. I’d rather have leather everywhere on it than black.

  • Jonathan

I don’t have a devices tab even after I connect to iTunes via Remote.

  • bigtalk

    umm oka cool
