Foursquare app updated with new design and real-time recommendations

Foursquare has issued a fairly significant update to its iOS client today, bringing the app to version 6.4. The update includes a number of improvements, including new UI and an all-new ‘Nearby’ button.

But easily the biggest addition to Foursquare 6.4 is the new Real-time recommendations feature. With it enabled, the app will send you useful location-based information, like current specials at a restaurant…

Here is the full 6.4 change log:

– Got an hour to kill before dinner? There’s a new ‘nearby’ button. Tap it to see which of your friends are around.
– Want to meet up with someone right now? We now just show each friend’s most recent check-in. Want to dig deeper and see more? Tap through to their profile.
– As always, the second you open the app, we show you what’s interesting around you, like a new restaurant or a popular concert nearby.

And more info on Real-time recommendations:

“Real-time recommendations // When you arrive someplace, we can tell you something great there (like the best thing to order, or a money-saving special). With this release, we’re turning real-time recommendations on for a small batch of people who use Foursquare on their iPhone (and expanding to more every day). It’s been live for some people on Android for a bit, and we can’t wait to put it in everyone’s hands.”

I’m actually really digging the new UI that shows only the latest check-ins from your friends, and the Nearby button is cool. But I’m really looking forward to trying out this Real-time recommendations feature.

I’m sure there are other apps that offer a similar service, but I don’t think anyone has the data to pull this off like Foursquare. Imagine walking into a pub and getting instantly notified of the current drink specials.

As it says above, the Real-time recommendations feature isn’t available to everyone just yet. But you’ll still need version 6.4 of this app to get it. So be sure that you update or grab the latest Foursquare release here.
