Wallpapers of the week: parallax ready walls for iOS 7

We are all settled with our new devices after a grueling week of long lines and iOS 7 upgrades. It was a big week for Apple fans the world over and next week will continue to excite as customers who ordered iPhone 5s electronically begin receiving units on Monday and Tuesday.

To prep for my reviews, I purchased a green 5c and silver 5s, of which the 5c arrived Friday. Although I had access to iOS 7 since WWDC, I opted to remain with an iPhone 5 iOS 6 JB until my new device arrived in the mail. Consequently, I have only been running iOS 7 for the past 24 hours through my new device. I must say, it is quite the shocking experience, but I am getting used to the new interface.

As the self proclaimed wallpaper guy for iDB, one of the new features I am very excited about is the parallax effect. Utilizing the iPhone’s accelerometer, gyroscope, and a little coding magic, the wallpaper appears to move behind the icons when tilting the device. To enhance the effect, applying a wallpaper slightly larger than the iPhone’s screen resolution is important. Step inside to download our first featured post with parallax ready images…

Wallpapers

There are a few theories bouncing around the internet about the size for creating a parallax ready wallpaper. After speaking with several well touted graphic designers in the community, including @Sentry, @Surenix, and @AR7, there still seems to be a few different theories buzzing around the web. Are there 200 pixels added to each side? 640+200 to the right, 640+200 to the left, which equals a width of 1040? Some are claiming 744×1392, which is the exact image size of wallpapers built into iOS 7, all of which we previously posted. Please, feel free to weigh-in your thoughts in the comments section below.

Although the decision process is still in a heated debate, this week the featured graphic artist is Jordan Huxley, with whom I communicated over the past few weeks. Huxley is in the +200px-to-each-side-camp and created the following wallpapers as such. To keep up with his work, follow him on Twitter @jrdnhxly and visit his personal blog, which will be updated frequently with additional wallpapers, including iPad versions, over the next few days. Currently, we have access to the iPhone 5s versions.

For future wallpapers, we will try to feature parallax ready images. However, as the public continues to gather more information about the correct resolutions, future posts may or may not immediately include parallax options. Keep in mind, iOS 7 will still provide a parallax environment, regardless of image size, but full compatibility is dependent upon resolution. To submit images directly, get in touch via Twitter @jim_gresham or send them directly by embedding images in an email to jim@idownloadblog.com.

How is everyone loving the new parallax feature in iOS 7? Meet us in the comments below.

Seriously. Do u guys move your devices a lot? I just don’t see what the big hoo-ha is all about regarding the parallex feature.

    • Carlos Gomes

      Just read the article.
If you are a person who’s into wallpapers, this is something that should get your interest.

      • Tommy

I am. In fact I do like the wallpaper section of this blog. Just got annoyed at how much the parallex feature is often praised as “oh-so-awesome”.

      • ᎯᎡᎢᏌᎡᎦ ᎦᎥᎷᎯᏁᎤᏤᏚᏦᎥᎦ

Because it is “oh-so-awesome. Its the little things that put a smile on your face.

      Link fixed. Sorry about that.

        Nice, big thanks!

      • Rafagon

Seb, if I visit the site from my iPhone, view the picture using Mobile Safari, and save it to the camera roll… Will it save the sides, or shave them off? I don’t want to lose the sides because they’re the whole point of the parallax effect.

  • spyder0109

I dont know if anybody has tried – but try putting in on a panorama image as a wallapaper – thats total fun to watch in parallax view.

    • Andrew Roth

      It doesn’t work for me.

      • fl0manel

        What device do you have?

  • Vander

    can’t download :(

  • kayla

I CAN’T BELIEVE APPLE REMOVED PANORAMIC WALLPAPERS AS THE BACKGROUND TO MOVE :(

  • Tobias9413

Is it just me or did they get rid of panoramic wallpapers? I’m on ios7 on an iphone 5s and can’t do it.

    • Singed

Beta iOS 7 had it but public iOS7 removed it. Maybe it was too buggy.

  • Tsavo Walker

Cool, I am really liking these articals with wall papers!

    • Xavier Leveson-Gower

There are more on the website. Definitely worth a look :D

  • jabohn

I’ve been using 1040×1526 for my wallpaper. When I Googled it, that’s what most places said. Also when I downloaded the old built-in wallpaper (before they changed it in the GM) they were all that size too.

  • Phil

HATE the parallax. Just gimmicky crap. I want to be able to use my own pictures like I have been, and now that’s an unreal hassle to go back and resize them all manually. 12 pages of unhappy users on AppleForums in the first 48 hours. I’m not alone.

    • Andrew Roth

Settings > General > Accessibility > Reduce Motion > On = No more parallax effect. :-)

      • Phil

Incorrect. Still requires oversized, unshrinkable pics, that can only be slid left or right. Fail

  • Robert Mathews

I love them on my iphone 5s! They are fantastic looking!

    • Xavier Leveson-Gower

Have you see the other sets on the website? I really like them!

      • Robert Mathews

        Right?! They are great!

  • somaxd

remember when this was a thing like 3 or 4 years ago on jailbroken devices… (3-4 year old gimmick… lol)

love my 5s… but it makes me laugh so much at how many tweaks ive had for years on JB devices that apple is just now ripping off.

  • andyr354

    Eagerly awaiting the iPad versions!

  • Kogije

It looks like I’m going to have to batch process all my old wallpapers
with gimp in order to adjust them to the new parallex feature!

  • Lars Kristian Burchard Refsgaa

Try using the built-in filters with these.. All new photos!
