Live Battery Indicator merges battery percentage with a circular icon

Live Battery Indicator

I’ve received quite a few inquiries about my iPod touch’s battery over the last few days. More specifically, people want to know exactly how I got new battery icon with the battery percentage in the middle.

This is the result of an upcoming jailbreak tweak called Live Battery Icon. It ditches the standard battery icon for a new-fangled circular indicator with the battery percentage neatly situated in the center.

Live Battery Indicator 83 percent

Live Battery Icon is from developer, Philip Wong, and although he’s provided no ETA, he says it will be available in the near future. My experience thus far has been pretty good. It doesn’t provide any new functionality, but it’s an interesting departure from the stock battery icon. Even better, it provides iPod touch users with a battery percentage, which they otherwise don’t have.

What do you think?

    Cool tweak

  • http://twitter.com/imperiumSG Andy M.

This is one tweak I am now very excited for.

  • bloodshed

i think the circle indicator is a bit larger than it should. other than that it seems legit.

    • ReanimationXP

Yep, by like 1 pixel. Glad to see I’m not the only one OCD about HUD and icon placement :)

      • http://www.facebook.com/raaed.rizza.7 Raaed Rizza

        Well I actually have OCD… Fml…

      • Khalid Mehmood Awan

Probably it will be similar to orientation lock indicator.

    • http://twitter.com/ShidHappens Sunec

exaclty! two less pixel (1 top and 1 bottom) and it fits perfeclty fine.

      • http://twitter.com/pw5a29 Philip

I’ll get this fixed when I submit it

      • http://www.facebook.com/lance.baker87 Lance Baker

Awesome!! If that is fixed I will certainly use it. OCD really is annoying sometimes…

      • http://www.facebook.com/joe.jonsen Joe Jonsen

hey can you work on fixing backgrounder next????lolololo

      • http://twitter.com/xXR3H4NXx Rehan™

It is also very inaccurate. I went in safemode my battery was 85 but with the tweak it said 90%

  • http://www.facebook.com/sriram.varadarajulu Sriram Harvind Varadarajulu

I think it would be better to make this as a theme like science aperture signal bars theme it’be better that way

    • ReanimationXP

This isn’t possible with a theme as the number positioning has been changed and there aren’t 100 visual battery states to accurately represent the percentage using graphics.

Being able to theme the tweak would be nice though, yes.

      • http://www.facebook.com/sriram.varadarajulu Sriram Harvind Varadarajulu

How bout making it display images for each battery state? :P I’m sorry if I’m saying this without considering the capabilities of what can be used :P

      • RarestName

I’ve just checked and yes, this tweak used display images!

“iPhone Touch’s Battery”… On a whole ‘nother level there Jeff. Sell it to me

  • http://www.facebook.com/JaeZh Jae Zhuang

    Awesome

  • http://www.facebook.com/daxeno Dax Asetre

i have installed it already… bit buggy. you need to reboot to make it work after installing it on iPhone 5.

    • http://www.facebook.com/shingo.hoshino Shingo Hoshino

where do u get it from?

      • http://www.facebook.com/daxeno Dax Asetre

        add http : / / cydia . myrepospace . com/pw5a29ip4/ to your Cydia Sources

    • Arjan Vlek

That does not fix it for mee. Do you need to hard reboot (home + power 10secs) to make it work?

      • http://www.facebook.com/daxeno Dax Asetre

Yes. thats what i did. i always do hard reboot on everything that fails.

      • Arjan Vlek

Installing libstatusbar fixed it. The new version does this automatically

  • RarestName

    Google search pw5a29ip4 for a beta :)

    • http://twitter.com/rick5up Ricky

Not working for me installed and doesnt have any effect

    • http://twitter.com/_iJailbreakr_ iJailbreakr

      thanks, adding now!

  • Andeh

Conceptually a great idea (the more free space on the status bar the better), but imo it’s let down by uninspired and awkwardly sized visuals. It’s too hard to fit a 1 to 3 digit number inside a perfect circle with the bar size constraints.

If only it were possible to combine the existing battery shape with a number inside that was still readable at any percentage…

    • ReanimationXP

It’s perfectly possible on retina. I think even this looks ok if the circle was centered on the status bar and given a bit more padding.

  • http://twitter.com/rick5up Ricky

Even better if the circle glows like blue if full and red when lower then 20%

    • http://twitter.com/pw5a29 Philip

I’ve tried red when lower then 20, it isn’t working well

      • http://twitter.com/rick5up Ricky

Ooo have you seen the ipad clock stopwatch like that would be awsome hahaha

      • http://twitter.com/pw5a29 Philip

updated my own repo, with red lower than 20, you may like a try :p

  • http://twitter.com/pw5a29 Philip

    Thanks for reviewing :)

Had this idea for a long time, because I saw similar widgets for Android.

Then I think, there should be one for iPhone as well.

Some people would hide the battery icon, but that would make it weird. Having the battery itself only is not convenient, so maybe I should make one that combines.

So I came up with this idea a long time ago, I’ve submitted it to FillipoBiga, Rudolf A3Tweaks, Cocoanuts etc. But seems no response. And I have problem developing myself because I don’t know to modify the default battery.
But thanks to magn2o, his attempt inspired me to modify with custom pngs, so big kudos to him.

But there are currently some glitches, as its a custom indicator, it wouldn’t fix on the most right side, would sometimes swap with other custom icons. I’ll keep trying, I’ll still post it if I failed, along with the 1 pixel less amendment.

    • http://twitter.com/MikeeeeyJ Michael Jack

Would there be anyway for you to make it stick to the far rights side? If you could make that work then this’d be the quintessential battery icon!

    • RarestName

Imagine what this tweak would become with custom themes (Y)

      • http://twitter.com/pw5a29 Philip

I’ll include a guide in the next update

    • http://twitter.com/rick5up Ricky

      IPod touch not supported yet

    • Jose Gonzalez

I take it this isn’t optimized for the iPad/iPad mini yet? It’s very pixelated, but readable.

  • scotchedpommes

Interested to try this, but would also second a desire to see an aperture science version. Already using a version of the aperture logo for the lockscreen battery and portalWifi shows how something similar would hopefully be implemented.

As an aside on battery percentage on the iPod touch, I’ve found that SBSettings no longer adds the toggle to settings as it did in older iOS versions. I imagine most of you here know, but just in case, you can add that toggle to your usage settings by going into N78AP.plist and adding gas-gauge-battery.

  • http://www.facebook.com/prabhdeep.singh.779 Prabhdeep Singh

Is there any tweak like this which would just display the percentage without the battery icon or if battery icon is there, may be a very small vertical battery icon to free up a lil bit of status bar??

    • Jose Gonzalez

Bolt, free on the BigBoss repo in Cydia.

  • Devam

Make a new post after it releases so we do not forget! Thanks!

    • Lordthree

      Yep.

  • Gerard Hampton

    Old Android tweak, well done.
if you want it to look even better. make the circle a different colour. as it gets to certain levels ie fully charged green, 15% make it yellow, 10% make it red etc. Also have different default colour options for between 16-99%. Mines blue which looks good on top of the black background.

  • J M

I only display the percentage on my phone. I desperately want a tweak that will change the color of the percentage to green when charging. That is all :( Then I can turn off the battery on the lockscreen.

If this tweak did that, I’d be the happiest person ever :)

    • Fraz Someone

That’s an awesome idea. There is a tweak though, that displays a Bolt sign on the right of the battery percentage.

      • J M

What is the name of it? I’d prefer to limit the icons up there, so something that changes the color itself would be so super amazing!

      • Guest

        It’s called… wait for it… Bolt.

    • Lordthree

It’s fairly easy to mod these kinda tweaks yourself if you ssh in and mod the file yourself

      • J M

I wish I knew how…it seems like you know, yes?

      • Lordthree

I csn tell you how to get started but I don’t know the exact location of the battery icon- you’ll have to hunt for it or go see it it’s listed at modmyi or something.

1} download openSSH from cydia. Follow the instructions on how to change your password

2} download an SSH client on your computer, I use cyberduck on mac.

3} connect to the phone via the client on your computer by putting in the IP and the password you just set up in step one,

Now this is where you”ll have to hunt for it or ask around… You have access to the entire file system at this point and should be looking at a list of directories. like main, var, and others. In those you have subdirectories. The clock icon is in there, somewhere.

Copy it on to your computer, make the changes in photoshop or some other program, and then overwrite the existing file on the iPhone. make sure to remember and save a clean copy of the original just in case.

The circular battery is a concept from Android, and is built into CyanogenMod, for anyone looking for facts. Otherwise, I like how it was ported to iOS, I’ll definitely be using it.

  • Bob

Looks nasty as hell. Improve the way it looks, and add colour to the circle, this colour should change when the battery level lowers. Then I’ll buy it. Also fix the placement as size.

  • Guest

I don’t understand why don’t they release these apps. Would like to have this, badger, and velox. So just release it already.

  • batongxue

    =_=
No offense, but that is very Android actually.

  • rosssimpson

    already on android :’)

  • http://www.facebook.com/mikhail.streeter Mikhail Streeter

Circle needs to be smaller (as everyone else said lol)
Other than that would love to have it!

  • http://www.facebook.com/josh.hazard.733 Josh Hazard

Uh, something like this has already been done, and was released almost a month ago. It’s called “Custom Battery” and is found on repo.fortysixandtwo

You can read more about it on reddit, the dev is on reddit

  • Diego Gastón Milano

Nice, but I’m sticking to BatteryPeek as I’m keen to icons and not having to see a number permanently. I like simplicity and having a number sitting up there is not elegant in my opinion. :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/DefJamz Andre Kingpin

A couple of questions. Does it animate when charging so as to show that it is being charged? And would it be a standalone or requires winterboard. Some of us like myself prefer not to use winterboard.

  • Isa Altintas

Comes from Android themes. But looks so much better on an iPhone.

  • tariq haidari

    Is this an upcoming tweak?

  • Eugene Lim

I like the idea as it clears up space in the status bar. Look forward to the release of this tweak and props to the dev and you for teasing us.

  • http://twitter.com/ithangfriends ithang

i like use batterypeek, tap pin, % will appear later auto hide

  • inf3rn0

    Looking forward to this one.

Why the rotation symbol stay after it? Anyway to fix that?

work on ipod touch 5g! but others battery tweaks – is NOT
