Chrome for iOS with Messages sharing and back button history now available

Google Chrome for iOS (iPad screenshot 004)

Google on Monday announced a new version of Chrome for the iPhone and iPad containing two new features. In addition to the obligatory stability and security improvements and bug fixes, Chrome build 25.0.1364.86 has brought out the ability to re-visit previously visited web pages by long-taping the back button.

This invokes a drop-down menu listing a history of the web pages you visited in the current session. The feature is also available on the desktop version of Chrome as well as on desktop and mobile version of Apple’s Safari browser. Another nice-to-have enhances Chrome’s Sharing menu with a new option for sending a web page via Messages…

Google also revealed in a blog post that searching on Google using Chrome for iOS will be tweaked “over the coming days.”

The improvement involves seeing your search term right in Chrome’s Omnibox. Previously, the Omnibox only displayed the search query URL, as depicted in the screenshot above.

Here’s a comparison screenshot of how Chrome handled Omnibox search URLs before and after the change, via The Next Web.

Chrome 25 for iPhone (before and after)

Notice how a query is now kept in the Omnibox after a search is performed. This capability has yet to make its way into the desktop version of Chrome.

You will also be able to easily refine your search queries and view more results on the search results page, Google promised.

With these changes, Google is bringing mobile and desktop builds of Chrome closer together in terms of feature parity for a seamless and unified experience no matter what device folks happen to be using.

Chrome 25 is a free download for the iPhone and iPad from the App Store.

If the new version is not yet available on your local App Store, wait a little as Google says Chrome 25 will be rolling out over the next few hours.

Having the same issues. Plus, it put Zephyr out of whack until I rebooted.

    • pauleebe

Same here .. saved the Chrome 23 .ipad and am reverting.

  • Eric Armstrong

My springboard crashed when I hit the update button on both my iPad and iPhone. Now chrome crashes about 5 seconds after launching. Anyone else having this issue? Obviously I’m jailbroken, maybe browser changer has something to do with it?

Do you have chrome download manager installed?

      • http://twitter.com/marnuc marcelo nunez

I erased chrome download manager and now it doesn’t crash anymore.

    • Eric Armstrong

I don’t have and download managers, and browser changer doesn’t seem to be the problem

  • http://twitter.com/dgsigala David Sigala

after the download, google chrome is having many problems like randomnly crashing and a noticeable lag when typing.

yes! Safari in iOS 6.1.2 is fast and had the native hability to share on twitter and fb, don’t forget his great fullscreen feature (I mean as iPhone user).

I’ve solved the crashing issue by deleting and re-downloading the app.

    • Eric Armstrong

      This worked for me too

    • http://www.idownloadblog.com Sebastien

That worked for my iPhone but not for my iPad

      • http://lessthan160.tumblr.com/ pieromod

yes, as i told you on your post, i’ve managed to stop the crashes on my iPad, but still some weird keyboard bugs (it doesn’t recognize rotations)

      • Ben Davis

Weird, a delete and reinstall didn’t work on my iphone 5 on 6.0.1

    • ringsgeek

Did the same thing. Doesn’t fix anything.

This update broke Chrome entirely for me!

Previously, Chromed worked well for me, but since this update, whenever I type something into the address bar, the app crashes the instant I press ‘return’… every. single. time.

This means Chrome is currently totally unusable for me, so I’m forced to reluctantly switch back to Safari.

For what it’s worth, I’m running iOS 6.1 on an iPhone 5. I’m also jailbroken, however I do not have any browser-related tweaks installed, and Crash Reporter is pointing directly at Chrome for the 20+ crash reports logged for Chrome in the past half hour.

I really hope this is fixed asap.

    • Eric Armstrong

Try deleting and redownloading, that worked for me.

      • Jahan

        Doesn’t work for me

“As far as the Chrome crashing, I was browsing through Google Groups, apparently Chrome 25 crashes on jailbroken phones. An update is on the way.

In the meantime you can fix it this way:
      1) Uninstall Chrome and any Chrome 3rd-party hacks (Chrome Customization, Chrome Download Manager, etc.)
      2) When you re-install Chrome and make sure you check the option to send anonymous statistics. Apparently having that option off is causing the crash.

Alternatively, if you don’t want to re-install Chrome, you can also open “Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Local State” file and change the “reporting_enabled” flag to “true”.”

      — this was posted by the dude up there ^^^. it worked for me after i checked the option to send anonymous statistics. try it out.

Worked here but the Local State file is in var/mobile/Applications/Chrome directory/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome

Chrome keeps crashing on my jailbroken iPad mini and iPhone 5 after updating to this version. I deleted the app and downloaded it again, which worked for my iPhone but not for my iPad. I’m not sure but from what I’ve seen so far, it only seems to affect jailbroken devices. Can you confirm?

    • deepdvd

I can confirm. iPhone 4S jailbroken on 6.1.2 . I’m going to revert. This is why I keep all my old .ipa files. I tried deleting and reinstalling Chrome to no avail. I have now even tried in Safe Mode. Chrome keeps crashing.

    • DanielMaciasJr

I have a jailbroken iPhone 5. Uninstalled it and installed again but it didn’t work. Still continued to crash.

    • http://lessthan160.tumblr.com/ pieromod

i can confirm this: on iPhone is ok, on iPad i managed to stabilize the crashes by removing and re-installing it but still some weird bugs like, when typing, the keyboard doesn’t recognize rotation and stays in portrait mode :

  • John

Hey guys i have some errors with chrome like you after update, but i found another great browser that in my view is a combination between safari and chrome, mercury browser, you should give a try. It is really awseome.

  • andyr354

I reloaded on my iPad and still no go. reloaded the old one from itunes.

  • http://twitter.com/MichaelJDelaney Michael Jay Delaney

I can’t even get into the Updates page on my phone so I’ll just sit this one out for now.

  • Lawrence

  • http://twitter.com/monster_hazardo Roger Riekki

I updated, and then it started crashing so I just reverted back to Chrome 23 on my iPod Touch and working like a charm again. The new crashing on Chrome 25 is annoying though.

I’ve done this on three iPhones 4S/5 iOS 6.1.0 & 6.1.2 and its works.

    • brooklynbrooklyn

Dude thank you for this post. After reinstalling i took too long to check the box to send statistics and it crashed. But after opening the app again and making sure i click it before it crashed it stayed on. I hate using Safari. It’s so boring looking and not as pleasing to use. thanks again

I can confirm this works. I did not delete anything prior to changing my chrome settings however (#1 above).

As quickly as you can launch chrome, click the three vertical bars in the upper right corner. Click on “Settings->Privacy->Send Usage Data->Change option to ‘Always’->Click ‘Done’”

Chrome should remain open. It looks like a lot but its not.

Once chrome is stable you can change the settings back. For example, I changed the “Send Usage Data” back to “Never” just to see if it would effect anything and it did NOT. So feel free to change it back once you can get chrome to stay open. I did at least.*

Edit*: I actually killed the process after changing the “Send Usage Data” back to “Never” and then relaunched chrome. Chrome crashed like before. So changing this option is for that process only. Future processes do not retain the “Send Usage Data” toggle fix.

(Posting from my iPad 2, ios 6.0, jailbroken)

I can confirm that this worked. Thank you

Fixed the crashes by reinstalling the app and removing chrome download manager
