Galaxy S III named Best Smartphone of 2012 at Mobile World Congress

The world of smartphones can essentially be divided into two camps: iPhone and Android. Sure there are some BlackBerry and Windows Phone users out there, but Apple and Google handsets make up most of the market.

And as in any situation where there are two dominant players, each platform has their own army of loyal fans. And I’m sure both sides have plenty to say about Samsung’s Galaxy S III being named the Best Smartphone of 2012…

That’s right, according to the 2013 Global Mobile Awards, which are the official awards of Mobile World Congress, the best smartphone of 2012 was the Galaxy S III. It beat out the iPhone 5, Nokia’s Lumia 920 and HTC’s Droid DNA.

The GSM Association appointed the panel of judges, which was made up of a group of a dozen global journalists and analysts. PC World’s Sascha Segan, who was part of said panel, explains how the group arrived at their decisions:

“The award selection process was a multi-tiered affair where we submitted lists through email and then narrowed it all down in a marathon, six-hour, three-continent conference call. The award will be supplemented on Thursday by a “best device at MWC” award – yes, I’ve already handed in my nominations, and no, I can’t tell you what they are.

In handing out the awards, we debated how innovative the devices were, the impact they made on the market and their commercial success. ”

And the smartphone category wasn’t the only award Apple missed out on. It also lost to Google’s Asus-built Nexus 7 for the Best Tablet of 2012 award. Admittedly, Apple may have shot itself in the foot here, releasing 3 tablets last year.

But the show belonged to Samsung. In addition to winning the best smartphone, it also took the ‘Best Mobile Enabled Consumer Electronics Device’ award for its Galaxy Camera, and was named Device Manufacturer of the Year.

I doubt that Apple cares much about these awards—especially since it sold a record number of iPhones last quarter, and the iPhone 5/4S are still the most popular smartphones in the world—but it still makes for an interesting debate.

So we’d love to hear what you think. Was the Galaxy S III really the best smartphone of 2012? Why or why not?

  • TesticularFortitude

My answer would obviously be biased as I don’t own nor have I even held any Samsung products. I own an iPhone 5 and love it, though.

    • Hyr3m

Good for you! That’s what matters ^^ No point in knowing what you’re missing until you’re able (or willing) to actually get it.

    • Kurt

Whatever you do, DON’T go to YouTube and watch videos on the S3 or Note 2. Man it’s torture having an iPhone and realizing how inferior it is to those devices.

      • TesticularFortitude

You remind me of my annoying brother-in-law. When we run, he’s always on me about how inferior Asics are to Nike. Somehow it eludes him that I just love Asics. It’s a brand I trust and love. To me, their comfort and feel are unmatched. Forgive me if I don’t hold Samsung and their products in the same esteem as you do. Regardless, life will go on.

      • Kurt

        Sorry TesticularCancer

      • TesticularFortitude

Hey, that’s funny!!! Sorry if I hurt your feelings.

      • http://twitter.com/HuchongLing Joey_Z

performance? efficiency? refinement? use of material that’s actually environmentally responsible? which is inferior? maybe that pixelated large screen with unrealistically eye hurting color saturation.

      • http://twitter.com/BryantAllred Bryant Allred

Did you just say pixelated? Please remove yourself from the internet and think about what you just said.

      • Kurt

the iphone has great whites. With my apps/websites utilizing white it looks really good. Downside? In general the chroma is too low on the iphone.

    • http://twitter.com/BryantAllred Bryant Allred

I realize most people just want a reliable phone that they are used to, but I would hope when choosing your next phone that you at least consider your options, rather than just automatically buying an iPhone.

      • TesticularFortitude

Apple isn’t the only show in town. I get that. However, it is the brand I love and trust. When I look at the smartphone landscape, all I see are different shades of gray. And a spec race to the bottom(similar to what has been done in the PC sphere). I love iOS and the grace it displays. I love its minimalist approach and its smoothness and attention to detail. I love the aesthetics of Apple’s devices. There’s an appeal that I get that’s unparalleled. When I look at a Galaxy phone, I see it as a thing. I see my iPhone as an extension of my body.

      • Kurt

attention to detail? have you seen the iphone 5 keyboard in landscape? they were too lazy to enlarge the keyboard for the iphone 5. so they just added gray to the left and right.

Galaxy Camera…………….. Apple won a few awards recently to

  • felixtaf

Its a good device and It may or may not be the best smartphone of 2012. But nothing can stop me from buying an iPhone!

    • MarcPhilippeB

The galaxy s3 is a piece plastic that (although it has a quad core processor!!) can’t even roll out the notification bar fluently. Don’t contradict me, I saw it more than enough.

    • GalaxyNoteFTW96

im selling my shitphone 5 once the s4 is announced. Samsung is WAY ahead of the competition. Keep wasting 200 bucks on the same shitty phone every year dude :P I bet switching from home screen to home screen hasnt bored you, given the fact the whole OS has remained the same since 2007 :P

      • http://www.facebook.com/anthony.rosado.777 Anthony Rosado

Man I will rather pay 200 dollar to get and iphone then a Samsung and u sound ridiculos I hope u dint mean an iPhone 5 cause other wise u are just a joke specially when u point out the same boring thing over and over

      • planetcoalition

If you pay attention to his previous comments, he has not been an iPhone user. You can gracefully ignore that imbecile.

      • GalaxyNoteFTW96

i have two phones btw :P One for business, obviously my Galaxy Note 2, and the shitphone 5 is for personal use (which i should say is extremely useless for any task i need to perform.

Shut the fuck up you retard. Whatever shitphone you have, don’t make it even dirtier with your hands.

      • Kurt

You can donate the iPhone 5 to a homeless person. but he may just not accept it and give it right back to you

Also, You said u r selling your shitphone 5 for a galaxy s4. Also, you pointed out the UI is same from 2007, then y the hell you bought it in first place… Dude, atleast learn to lie! BTW, Am wasting 200$ of my money every year (That I save) and not your money. So, mind your own business!

      • GalaxyNoteFTW96

Apple definitely succeeds because of useful idiots like you :)

      • felixtaf

Ya… We are idiots and you are a genius… that y u bought a phone that u r dont like to the core and trolling abt it….!

      • GalaxyNoteFTW96

that is why i made a username dedicated to my “crappy” smartphone?

      • FUCCDROIDSFTW

        Pussy ass kids nowadays.

      • felixtaf

And this is your previous comment. Pathetic liar! “Sadly I dont care… my galaxy note 2 will be beat any iphone they come out with. The fact that some random joe schmo is using an iphone for work doesnt matter to me at all :P. Iphone is easier to use. Android is for the more enlightened and advanced users and it is kinda obvious now since apple hasnt innovated at all since the iphone 4.”

      • GalaxyNoteFTW96

i have two phones btw :P One for business, obviously my Galaxy Note 2, and the shitphone 5 is for personal use (which i should say is extremely useless for any task i need to perform.

agreed. making things difficult to use does not make the users more skilled, it only makes them FEEL they are more advanced…

      • felixtaf

You are right! That was @GalaxyNoteFTW96′s comment for an old post. He claimed that he owns an iPhone 5 (with strange username). Suddenly he got two phones and i jus pointed out his old comment. Poor guy, dint know that we can track his comments in Disqus!

      • http://twitter.com/HuchongLing Joey_Z

I’m pretty sure you will waste 200 bucks on androids, not on iphones, and not every year, but every 6 month… (talking about OS support for older devices)

  • Joe Thomas

The GSM association appointed judges? I don’t suppose the fact that Apple products are still the only ones that don’t allow carrier bloat ware or logos on their devises had any influence on their decisions.

    • http://twitter.com/Konahamarue ElementalXTC

That thought definitely crossed my mind

    • http://twitter.com/zplit | zριit |

For sure u have no idea what u talking about.

    • felixtaf

They will sure go bankrupt bcoz Apple sold nearly 50 Million iDevices in Q4 of 2012! Poor soul.. read some news plz….

      • Hyr3m

You don’t know what cash flow is, do you ?

      • felixtaf

Whatever that is, 8 Billion profit and nearly 50 billion revenue is something most of the companies cant think off….

      • http://twitter.com/HuchongLing Joey_Z

I’d be curious how a cash cow can go bankrupt before it’s competitors

      • Hyr3m

Well for example if they keep losing value on the stock markets and maybe also start losing people’s trust and their sales decline, they will have to downsize and rethink their plan. If they fail to do so and persist in staying obnoxious dicks, they just might go down. Unfortunately, and as much as I would love it, I tend to think that’s not going to be the case although it’s theoretically possible. I think the future looks as bleak as it will be “futuristic”.

  • http://twitter.com/rigaritax rigaritax

Apple doesn’t pay for a booth there. Nuff said

    • http://www.idownloadblog.com Sebastien

      Spot on

      • globaloffensive

so you were ok when iPhone was given this award the last couple of years and the year someone else wins it, they should have paid for it! give credit where it’s due!! don’t be a blind fanboy

      • felixtaf

You mean the same someone who BOUGHT a JUDGE for themselves. If they can buy a judge, they can buy an award too!!!

      • Hyr3m

The law firm they contracted has HIRED an ex-judge. Please get your facts straight… if someone “bought” a judge it’s Apple and the judge is Jody Koh.

      • felixtaf

Whatever it is, a Judge who ruled against Apple is now working for Samsung… That sounds odd!

      • Hyr3m

He’s working for a firm that was contracted by Samsung… As far as both of us know, Samsung does not have the power to decide who gets hired by the firms that they do business with…

Also, the guy is an IP expert so I don’t see why that firm should not have hired him, he’s good and he’s fair; proof is he put Apple back in its place regarding all the BS-suing they’ve been doing, while still saying that Samsung’s products weren’t as good as Apple’s (or “cool”, whatever that means… I guess they don’t overheat as much? :P ).

      • felixtaf

He may be fair or good, as you said. But it sounds odd. And overheating is only in iPad 3 and its still less than a laptop!

      • Hyr3m

It sounds odd because people twist the facts… He’s no longer a judge and he doesn’t work as a Samsung employee or consultant but works for Samsung through a firm that was contracted by Samsung.

I was just kidding about the overheating because of the word “cool”… and the statement kinda goes the other way around ’cause the then-judge said Samsung’s tablets were not as cool… (so according to my joke the iPads don’t overheat as much as the galaxy tabs. But I don’t know about that… as I said I was only joking, and tablets are useless as fuck so I wouldn’t know the first thing about their level of heat).

      • felixtaf

Ok. You may be right. Am not convinced yet. Dont waste you time on me..lol…
And I own an iPad 3… Its hot, if u hold in lower left side and use it for about an hour or so. Mostly during gaming. Not so much for me, but some ppl dont like it. Hope it was fixed in iPad 4 (am not sure)

      • Hyr3m

Yeah I guess they can’t really help it… my S3 heats up quite a lot when it’s downloading torrents in the background and I play NFS or some other heavy games… No fan = less heat dissipation…

      • http://www.idownloadblog.com Sebastien

Again, no matter how you look at it, it’s a conflict of interest. The fact that he was hired by a company that was hired by Samsung, makes him indirectly hired by Samsung. I can’t see why it’s so hard for you to admit there is a conflict of interest here. It’s pretty obvious.

      • Hyr3m

I don’t mean to sound rude Sebastien but in your opinion it’s a conflict of interest between what and what exactly?

If he were still a judge then obviously there would be a conflict of interest between his position as a judge supposed to be impartial and his position as someone on the (indirect) payroll of Samsung. He no longer is a judge though, and he cannot change his prior decisions with retroactive effect or whatever.

If he had been on Samsung’s payroll while in his judge position (although that’s probably not legal but let’s say it is), then he would never have been given that Samsung v. Apple case (or was it “Apple v. Samsung”?) because it would have caused a conflict of interests… But right now he has no engagements to honor that might be conflictual with this “indirect” Samsung position.

One might think it’s unfair for someone having had this position to be working for one of the companies that he was supposed to judge impartially… However I would argue that the people on Samsung’s legal team during that trial probably have more experience than him on the subject of “bending” the rules and whatnot… after all they did convince him, did they not?

    • Tr1pTr0p

Wait, you seriously think that Apple would be able to compete with all the new and amazing smartphones being revealed there? Whatever you’re smoking, I want some.
Every year, Apple holds a keynote where they announce a new smartphone which is still not able to compete with smartphones that were announced a few months back during CES and MWC. That is why they don’t have a booth there. Apple is going to have to make a pretty big leap with their next iPhone if they would like to compete with the Galaxy S4, which is coming out in the following few weeks.
      Keeping it real.

      • felixtaf

With all the New smartphones available there, how Samsung won the award? What happened to HTC Droid DNA? LG Nexus 4? They r much better than S3… SO Samsung bought the award fr sure. And Nobodys going to buy iPhone or GS3, jus because it won an award in MWC!

      • Tr1pTr0p

I wouldn’t go as far as to say that Samsung bought the award, but still… It’s all subjective.
And I disagree about that last part. Samsung will definitely use this award in advertisements to attract new customers. They’d be crazy not to. But with or without the award, it’s still a great smartphone.

  • @dongiuj

I have an iPhone 5 and a galaxy S3. My S3 is doing all the work while my iPhone is sat around doing nothing but FaceTime and iMessage which is approx 3-4 times a month…

    • http://twitter.com/zplit | zριit |

The other way around for me. Always have my iPhone 5 in my hands and my gs3 sit in my closet.

      • outof

can i have your s3 please.

    • Raj

Did you pay the iPhone 5 for just FaceTime and iMessage which is approx 3-4 times a month? Don’t lie…

      • @dongiuj

To be honest I got the i5 (free from my network provider) cause I thought it would be as awesome as apple made it out to be… I made a mistake by getting it and made a decent move by cancelling my contract, getting a better phone, moving to a different provider, get cash back for moving to that provider and saving myself approx £800 over a 2 year period. BONUS!

  • Jay

Without a doubt, S3 is an excellent smart phone phone. Can’t wait S4 to come out. Samsung is a world class company around the world, minus the US. Wish Apple learns a thing or two about Samsung.

somany fan bois, so funi , samsung didnt really copy shit, apart from siri, and that wasnt even apple, apple just bought it. samsung didn’t invent android phones,

      • felixtaf

Apart from Siri, they copies nothing? they copied, Ipod touch design, Mac mini, iPhone n iPad, iPhone ads, iPhone n iPad Box, Data cable, charger, mac book pro, icon patterns, apple store (even the employees t-shirt s blue like apple) and the latest one is Passbook!

      • RarestName

        And Google didn’t invent Android.

you miss my point, i say nothing about google, what i mean is that its not like samsung is the only one making phones that bare resemblence to the iphone, and its not like they were the first to do it either,

Sorry, I’m too infatuated with my iPhone 5 to even consider using an Android device. People will just have to agree to disagree.

  • JT_CHITOWN

Last year it was the Galaxy SII that took best smartphone. The iPhone has not won since the iPhone 4 in 2011. Apple did win best tablet last year for the iPad 2, though. Me? I’m planning on upgrading to the next iPhone when it arrives, as my iPhone 4S has performed flawlessly. I wish I could say the same about its predecessor, a HTC Android. Complete nightmare.

    • GalaxyNoteFTW96

but you dont need to upgrade… the iPhone 5 is the exact replica of the 4s… Its just half and inch taller and “faster.” Arent you already tired of the same shitty phone? You Apple fans are somewhat strange. :P

      • felixtaf

Note 1 n Note 2 – Same Half inch taller… Faster and ICS VS Jellybean. Nothing new…

      • JT_CHITOWN

        Well said.

A well configured jailbroken iPhone will far outpass a Samsung any day….

    • http://twitter.com/BryantAllred Bryant Allred

Please enlighten me… Name a few things a jailbroken iPhone can do that the s3 cannot do? And just to be fair, a rooted s3.

  • Ernie Marin

im no a bit surpriced, i bet if Apple’s stock was still on the 700 mark it would have won the award, but since Samsung is the hot investor ticket now they will be getting awards, add to that the coming release of the S IV, and that Apple won’t release a phone this year, but let’s see who wins in 2014 after the iPhone 6 is released.

    • Kurt

But iphone 5 is noted as being an ugly phone (the back) and the front is old looking, looks like a cyclops of an iphone from 2007 so its quite outdated. And iOS 6 is known for being riddled with bugs and too similar to iOS 5. It’s been a bad release for Apple. Maybe this year they will step up and do something? But the problem is Jony Ivy is in charge and he doesn’t change things. Devices look identical year after year.

  • http://www.facebook.com/manny.aguil Manny Aguil

this year i turn to samsung s3 and thats the worst mistake. anybody wants to trade this phone sucks.

      lol yup

  • Hyr3m

Dafuq was Tim Minchin doing there? Also, do you think he was barefoot on the stage while wearing a suit?

Btw they’ll have to explain to me how the Note2 doesn’t beat the S3… Did they consider the practicality of the size in their evaluation or is it just ’cause it’s not a “phone” per say but a “phablet” ?

  • iNfAMOUS70702

as an owner of both an iphone 5 and SIII i gotta say the SIII is better…even jailbroken iOS is stale and boring as fuck…i do prefer the appstore and itunes
    however

    • http://twitter.com/BryantAllred Bryant Allred

I agree completely, although the iPhone 5 is a solid performing phone.. its lack of customization (even with a jailbreak) is sub par to android. Although touchwiz isn’t perfect by any means, it at least allows the user a little more control whereas the iPhone is perfect, but only with the limited things it can do. So really, if you want the very best phone possible.. I suggest getting an sgs3, rooting it, and installing solid custom roms like foxhound or cyanogen mod. Or wait for the s4.

  • http://twitter.com/Konahamarue ElementalXTC

I have a Galaxy Note 2 on ATT and about 20 apps came preloaded on the device, 12 from ATT that I will never use.
For all the things GNote and SGS3 can do… it sucks to put down $700 (off-contract because I will leave ATT the moment they piss me off) to get a phone that consistently reminds me that it is really a giant advertisement for the phone company. Sheesh!!

  • felixtaf

“Apple dint innovate anything after iPhone 4″. Stupid comment posted by these Shamesung fanboys. The iPhone 5 design is still a jawdropper for many cheap plastic users out there! Wat about iCloud backup (more like your nandroid backup which requires rooting)? Jus few examples. (326 ppi was introduced by Apple first, that inspired all others out there to bumpup the pixels. iPad 3 display resolution is jus now matched by Nexus 10). If u call Smart stay (which dont wrk in dim light), S-beam, S-Voice (Siri rip-off) and a stylus (S-pen) are innovations, you must be mad!

    • Tr1pTr0p

Why is this ppi pissing contest Apple started considered an innovation on Apple’s part, but this screen size pissing contest isn’t? Why so many double standards? Be realistic!

I’m one of those who say that Apple hasn’t really innovated in the past 3 years and all it takes is a comparison of what Apple did in the period from ˜2007 to 2009 or 2010, to what Apple has been doing in the past 3 years. I mean, they reimagined two product categories… And what did they do in the past 3 years? iCloud and iPhone 5? Who are you kidding?

According to you, Bigger screen n Better specs is an innovation? Its not innovation, its evolution (As mentioned by an iDB member before). Tired of this InNOvation shit!

      • Tr1pTr0p

I don’t consider bigger screens and better specs innovations, nor have I said that. I compared those two because I’d like to know how is Retina not an evolution? It’s a typical Apple marketing move of adopting something that is already happening on the market as their innovation.

      • felixtaf

Yes… Thats exactly it…. Invention and innovation are different. Here is a comparison. “Invention” can be defined as the creation of a product or introduction of a process for the first time. “Innovation,” on the other hand, occurs if someone improves on or makes a significant contribution to an existing product, process or service.” So, Retina is an INNOVATION! Thank u…

      • Tr1pTr0p

“…significant contribution to an existing product…” Well, according to that inaccurate definition, larger screens and better specs can also be classified as INNOVATIONS. You’re welcome, but you need better definitions.

And since you dont know, Dell Streak 5 was announced and released before Galaxy note. So, Samsung doesnt innovate. It rather copied Dell’s ideas (as usual).

      • Kurt

Streak was 5 inches and no stylus. Hardly a copy. As you call other people I will graciously call you it too, “Dumbass”

      • felixtaf

You are more than a dumbass…5 inches vs 5.3 inches (Big difference). 5″ Phablet was Streak… ans Note is 5.3 inch released nearly 15 months after Streak 5 release. Bumped up specs and a so-called S-pen (stylus). Is it a copy or not?.

      • Kurt

I’m more than a dumbass? What would that be, enlighten me. Best phone is the Note 2 and of course SIII, soon to be S4. Thats why you are trolling, because your feelings are hurt. We are both iphone/ipad users, neither of us are samsung/android users yet I’m honest about the goods and bads of each company/os. You lie and don’t accept truths. Be gone minion.

      • felixtaf

My feelings are hurt? Exactly your’s is hurt now. Because you ignore totally about the Streak 5 copy of Samsung and saying something about android n note 2. And you are more than a troll now, posting stupid responses for all the comments. And how good you know that i dont use android? I have used and using android devices too. And i never said they r shit, unlike you trashing on iPhone!

      • Tr1pTr0p

You’re unbelievable… Dell Streak? Are you fucking kidding me? The equivalent to that would be me saying how Apple ripped the iPad idea from Toshiba’s Portege M200. What the hell are you smoking?

When I ask about features Apple obviously ripped from their competition, notification center, for example, the number one answer I get is how Apple saw it and improved it. So why is it okay for Apple to rip others off, but when others do that exact same thing, they’re laughed at, ridiculed and mocked?

      • felixtaf

You still dint saw the link i posted yesterday about samsung… I have no time to argue with you…

      • Tr1pTr0p

Of course you don’t have time. Riiight.

  • speedy

I already shifted from iPhone to Nexus 4!!…Got tired of the same iOS for 3 years….But I really like apple’s build quality…If apple can come up with some revolutionary features I will be more than happy to come back to apple. The only reason I read this blog regularly is that I am still an APPLE FAN!1 m/

    • GalaxyNoteFTW96

      FUCK Yes!

So I moved from the iPhone 5 to the Samsung Galaxy S3 last week, I just wanted a bigger screen and in all honestly, I’m bored of iOS. Saying that, the iPhone was a great phone all round but so is the s3 and they both of equal hits and misses, I just miss VSCO Cam! haha :)
