Apple released iOS 6.1 beta to developers earlier today and we’ve been on the hunt for new interesting features ever since. iDB reader Darryl R. sent us an interesting find that isn’t life changing, but still deserves a little attention.

When playing a song from the Music app, if you are on the Lockscreen and double tap the Home button, you will notice the new music controls and layout that are now consistent with the controls you find inside the Music app itself…

As I said above, it’s probably not going to change your life, but it will certainly make your Music experience that much more pleasant.

As always, please make sure to let us know if you find anything interesting in iOS 6.1.

  • Daniel James

Was wondering why this wasn’t already implemented. Very unlike Apple to have an inconsistent interface.

    • Jonathan

It used to be very unlike Apple, but they’ve gotten a little lax recently. Hopefully Jonny Ive will bring back the very high standard.

  • Looks so much better

  • Schalkb

Seems like Apple are bored or something. Why not work on productive iOS tweaking….

    • 4p0c4lyps3

Ya. Rlly. Jesus Christ, is a grabber tab to access multitasking bar and a kill all button too gd much to ask for. Oh how I miss my Zephyr and kill all… Instead of wearing out my f’n home button constantly.

      • Johnathan Jennings

I used my iPhone 4’s home button so much it quit working. Thank god I have my iPhone 5 now, works perfect.

  • Sentry

So they pretty much nicked my concept mockup I did three months ago. Basically fixed what I was complaining about, great! :p

I wonder if the iPhone 5 album art still shows black bars, though.

  • Those controls look very similar to the ones in that exciting iOS switcher concept a month or so ago.
The switcher needs these controls too

    • Jonathan

I thought the concept music control icons were based off the controls from the music app, just like the new lockscreen ones are.

      • Sentry

They are. I actually mocked up a lock screen concept similar to this three months ago before I did the switcher idea, I posted a link in here but it’s awaiting moderation (link now below). :p Still, this is good change, and basically what I wanted to be fixed with the lock screen (spacing, streamlined info, etc). Though I still would like an option for the the playback buttons to be present without needing to double click the home button.

    • Sentry

Yeah, that was my concept. One of the developers working on the tweak with me now saw this news and basically sent me the same thing you just said. :p

    • sa

It wouldn’t really work with the grey linen background in the switcher.

If I’m being honest, I would like to see more UI updates than anything else, keeps iOS looking fresh and I wish there were toggles and music controls on the notification center natively,

  • Actually, the “Before” (iOS 6.0.1) looks like this –

    • This is what podcast controls look like. Not Music

      • my bad. i guess i never listten to music on my iPhone, that’s why i thought it’s the same ๐Ÿ™‚

  • ghulamsameer

That’s good. I might be the only OCD one, but the fragmented UI has bothered me.

    • iamnotfan

you mean Over the Counter Developer?

    • I preferred the clock being large and easy to read!!!! WTF!!!

      • Muktar Gazaloe

It still large and easy to read, this is only in case you double tap the home button and access the music controls so it doesn’t damage the album art.

  • Finally!!! I was surprised it wasn’t changed in 6.0 initially

  • i98111

Even battery percentage increased, see before and after ๐Ÿ˜‰ kidding ๐Ÿ™‚ but looks better.

  • I never understood why the volume slider had to look like the Apple logo.

    • Johnathan Jennings

    • Johnathan Jennings

That’s called a chrome look, buddy.

    • Johnathan Jennings

      Not the apple logo

  • So you mean now its without service? Lol

  • I really like this feature

  • 4p0c4lyps3

Shld of been implemented from the get go. More ios weak sauce.

  • @zausser would be proud

  • Gorgonphone

smaller and harder to press oh cool

    • Sentry

Umm, no. The target points would actually probably be the same, just given some breathing room by spacing the buttons out. That also helps in preventing accidentally hitting the wrong button.

  • yeah, yeah…. not worth a post, imho!

  • AK

I’m on iPhone 5 ios 6.0.1 and mine are still old style. Weird?!?

    • Johnathan Jennings

      It’s 6.1
      Not iOS 6.0.1

  • John Wickham

I don’t see this on my iPhone 4 (6.1 beta). I’ll check my iPhone 5 to see if it’s there.

  • hey maybe they will update the Videos app to look like it belongs in iOS6 and not the same app from iOS 5………..

  • Usama Ahmad

the moniker “Designed for humans” is ringing in my ears now ๐Ÿ™‚

  • chin2793

    Still no seek bar??

  • Kris

I updated to 6.0.1 but I still have the same old music controls and layout … Any ideas why ?

    • this is 6.1 not 6.0.1 you’ve update. this is a beta release.

  • Doesn’t work on my iPod Touch

  • My Iphone still the same it didn’t change at all

  • iamnotfan

    Apology OS 6.1

I don’t mean to start an Android-iOS war but seriously, Android has them since Ice Cream Sandwich. How about that Apple, isn’t that copying?

  • ghulamsameer

The news that I’ve heard is that Jony Ive is joining the group that will replace Scott Forstall, so hopefully there might be some “Ive-esque” UI changes.

    • Falk M.

      “joining the group”…?
He’s leader of Human Interface development now.
He’s in charge of hardware design AND all software interface design now.

Everything Apple you look at will be ‘ive’d at some point.

      • ghulamsameer

Yeah, I posted this a month ago, so that was all the information I knew then.

  • Thomas Gehman

    Looks tons better!

  • It’ll change my life! Besides texting and obviously talking, I use my iPhone for playing music the most. I would recommend iTunes Match to you, but I have been disappointed with the service since I upgrade to iOS 6.0.

  • I think the implementation of the music controls should already appear on the lockscreen, no matter if music is playing or not.

  • I found a bug, Panorama is messed up on the iPod Touch 5g

  • I found a new feature, on Game Centre, when you go to invite players to play with you, there’s a new “New By Players toggle witch lets you play with players via Bluetooth

And yet when you double tap the home button from anywhere but the lock screen and swipe to the right twice the slider is the chrome one. Very unlike Apple to be this inconsistent with the UI.

  • iPad too!

  • Marcus2012

Ugh, they keep trying to Andorid-ify the UI.

  • pepe

ever since i updated to 6.1 my music app keeps skipping random songs and crashing on some cases… i tried removing all songs, turning iphone off and on again, and adding all songs again and it doesnt help… i dont want to have to restore my phone because of this issue.. anyone knows how to fix it?
