How to jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 using Absinthe 2.0 on Windows

Fret not Windows users, you can now download Absinthe 2.0 in order to perform an untethered jailbreak on your iOS device running iOS 5.1.1. The procedure is pretty much exactly the same as it was for Mac users, beside a few minor details like running Absinthe as an administrator, and the self extracting zip file. Outside of that, if you can follow the steps from our Mac tutorial, you should be fine to use our Windows tutorial as well.

Check inside for the full dedicated tutorial for jailbreak your iOS 5.1.1 device on Windows, because hey, we love our Windows readers and viewers!

Step 1: Download Absinthe 2.0 for Windows from our dedicated downloads page.

Step 2: Extract, and right click on the absinthe-win-2.0.exe icon and select Run as Administrator. This first file is a self extracting zip file. Once you do this, a new folder will be created on your desktop called absinthe-win-2.0 with the necessary files.

Step 3: Open the absinthe-win-2.0 and right click on the absinthe.exe icon and select Run as Administrator.

Step 4: Connect your eligible iOS 5.1.1 device, and verify that Absinthe recognizes the correct name of your device.

Step 5: Click the jailbreak button on Absinthe, and let it run. You should see a progress bar.

Step 6: Eventually your device will appear as if it’s performing a restore, this is normal.

Step 7: Once the device has completed the “restore”, you should notice the Cydia icon on your Home screen.

Step 8: Once Absinthe reports that the process is complete, you can close Absinthe and disconnect your device.

Step 9: Open Cydia and let it configure itself for the first time. Congratulations, your iOS 5.1.1 device is now jailbroken untethered!

    My iPhone 4 (CDMA) was seriously out of date (iOS 4.2.8 and jailbroken) and I needed to update because I was missing out on a lot of functionality – I couldn’t update certain apps, couldn’t download certain apps, could purchase music from iTunes on my phone…and it was really starting to act buggy.

    I managed to get the JB to work, after trying a few things. I first tried using absinth 2.0 – I erased my phone, ran the program as admin, and it still wouldn’t work.

    Then, I upgraded to absinthe 2.0.1. It worked. As said before, it was JB on 4.2.8. I upgrade to 5.1.1 – which nearly gave me a heart attack, since I can not live without some of my JB apps (MyWi, anyone?). Then, for some reason, iTunes restored all my data – kinda. For example, my texts were there, but my contact names didn’t show, just their phone numbers. I ran absinthe 2.0.1 as admin and it worked like a charm. (*Note: It detected my phone wrong as well – iPhone 3,3 with 5.1.1) Then, I restored using iTunes. Now, I’m using my backup created with pkgbackup to restore my JB files from my previous JB.

    Also – if you erase all contents from your phone before using absinthe, it goes A LOT faster. I tried to JB before erasing everything and it took forever before I got the stupid error.

    For those of you who are new to JBing – I seriously suggest investing in pkgbackup – it backs up all your tweaks, apps, repositories, etc that you added via Cydia. It adds the backup to your address book (so it syncs with iTunes) or you can save your backup via DropBox as well.

      But if your on iOS 5 or higher I recommend OpenBackup, as it uses iCloud to back up your jailbreak apps/tweaks

    I’m getting a different kind of issue. Cydia is on Springboard and the jailbreak (supposedly) completed fine, but Cydia will not load. Goes to a black screen then back to Springboard. Reboot helps none. Any ideas? Please?

    He’s making plenty of sense actually. a lot of previous jailbreak utilities would have to update the .hosts file under c:windowssystem32driversetc to point the apple address to one of saurik’s signing servers or some other server. if you put a # in front of the line with this in that file it basicallyd isables that change in the file. It can be a pain to edit the file though. best bet is to run notepad as admin and browse for it so you can actually see and edit the file. there’s likely lots more descriptive info on this in the forums. I’m much too tired to describe further without possibly confusing people more. :)

    waiting on restore number 2 after it failed to JB on my restored device. d’oh. interesting how we are now restoring on top of the JB now though. hmmmmm

    Jailbroke. then opened cydia. said it would close after it needed to do for opening for the first time. it closed and shut off. i turned it back on and cydia was gone. internet was gone. setting was gone. all of the important stuff was gone….what do i do?

      Used itunes to restore to factory settings. jailbroke with absinthe 2.0.1. worked this time. everything seems to be working so far. will let you know if anything else happens. thanks for the jailbreak though. have been anticipating to do mine for a while now :)

    apparently I have totally screwed up my jailbreak and desperately need help. Here’s the path of my stupidity:

    - did a back up of the phone first
    - have an iPhone 4 (NOT S) on AT&T, and it was already jailbroken and working fine on untethered 5.01. been waiting for 5.1.1
    - attempted to run Absinthe 2.0 this morning and it says that the device is already jailbroken. (i’m new to this, i knew i was jailbroken but i thought i still had to run this app if i wanted to go to 5.1.1).
    - when that didn’t work i made the assumption that i just needed to do a firmware update. so i went to the idb download page and downloaded the newest 5.1.1(build 9B208), then i option-clicked the “update” button (not “restore”, i specifically used “update”) and it seemed to install it just fine
    - phone came back up working perfectly except not jailbroken (or at least there’s no cydia or any of my jailbroken apps)
    - tried to run Absinthe 2.0 again but now says the device is not supported anymore
    - tried to run Absinthe 2.01 and same error
    - put it in dfu mode and tried redsn0w, starts the process of jail breaking but fails half way through. phone resets and it’s back to the main screen and works fine but not jail broken.

    what did i do? what can i do to get myself jailbroken again?

    please help!

    I HAVE NO SERVICE! :( I have an IPhone 4s through sprint(dont know if that matters or not)and the jailbreak went smoothly, I backed it up on iTunes, reset all, extracted and ran absinthe 2.0.1.exe, it identified my Phone correctly, I let it run until it was finished, went back and restored the back up. I can asses Cydia no problem but now I have no service on my phone and I’ve reset all again and reset network as well in settings. Anyone else have this problem or know a solution?!!

    I got a lockdown error when it was rebooting after uploading all the payload data. The iPad came up to the lock screen and Absinthe reported a lockdown error, however when I looked… There was cydia and all seems well.

    I have a new iPhone 4s, 64g that ran the jailbreak just fine with Absinthe 2.0.1, but my iPhone 4, 8g shows as an unsupported device.
    FYI – Since I upgraded to the 4s, my iPhone 4 is not connected to my carrier network. (AT&T) I’m just keeping it more or less as an iPod/spare “iDevice.”
    Any thoughts on maybe fixing this?

    I attempted to jailbreak my Verizon iPhone 4s a few times and I continued to get the “Hmm…something went wrong” message about 6 times. So, I did a iTunes restore (about 3 times now) and now Absinthe, both 2.0 and 2.1, says my device is not supported? It was supported just before the iTunes restore so I don’t get it!

    I Mean I think I’m a pretty smart guy. BUT!!! This information and video is usless.
    I can’t even find where to download it so it goes to mly desktop. The video starts off with it on the desktop. How about telling us how to get it to the desktop?

    I jail broke my 4s with no problems at all it’s running fine, had a few problems installing apps but I found a fix for that. Anyway my IPad 2 is where I have my problems. I connect my iPad to my windows laptop run the Absinthe app it recognizes my iPad 2 press jailbreak the bar goes up a third of the way then nothing for 5 mins. Then a window pops up saying Absinthe has stopped working windows is looking for a solution for this problem. What should I do:( I backed up my stuff on the cloud should I do a hard reset and wipe my iPad clean then do the jailbreak process? Please help

    Some packages aren’t working… I can’t download them, it says that I need to download other packages as MobileSubstrate but I can’t fount them.
    It “depends” on these packages, what to do?

    I just tried to do the jail break. When I right click the file “run as administrator” is not an option so I clicked “open” and instead of it running or doing the extraction iTunes opened up.

      When I right click it the only thing that happens is a flashing black line inside the document. I can’t get the “run administrator option chose whatever I do I am at a lose what to do and there is no help regarding this from the Dev team

This may also take a while… A message pop up and say absinthe.exe has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

    I have downloaded the absinthe exe zip file but don’t know how to extract the file to run it as administrator. I cut to Documents from Downloads cos I was told to put the file either in documents or the Desktop this would allow me to open the file and extract the actual absinthe 2.0 so that I could run it but nothing is working whether I right click or left click on the file. I have opened it with Notepad and got all the writing codes or whatever they are but that’s as far as I can get, can you please help me, the tutorials don’t actually explain how to do this.
