9to5Mac is reporting this weekend that Apple is experiencing “atypical inventory shortages” of white 16GB iPhone 4 replacement units. As a result, it seems like [at least] some iPhone 4 users seeking hardware replacements could be in for a nice surprise.

According to the report, Apple has instructed some of its Apple Store Genius Bars to start replacing problematic white 16GB iPhone 4 models with compatible iPhone 4S units…

“This iPhone 4S would be a refurbished white iphone 4S 16GB. This situation will not affect all customers and Apple Stores, but it seems like many white iPhone 4 16GB owners seeking hardware replacements may get Siri, an A5 chip, and an eight megapixel camera out of their next Genius Bar appointment.”

It’s worth noting that this exception only applies to white 16GB iPhone 4 models that are still under their AppleCare warranties. And at this point, only Apple Stores in Canada and the United States appear to be making the exchanges.

But if you meet the above-criteria, and your iPhone 4 has been acting up, it seems like there’s a fair chance that Apple will replace it with a 4S model. Cool.

Have you received a 4S replacement for your iPhone 4?

  • Yea, my uncle had his iPhone 4 replaced to an iPhone 4s. I think his was black and without warranty. I never had warranty and apple was nice enough to replace my iPhone 4s when the screen was broke.

  • Anyone planning on selling their 16gb white iPhone 4..:P…btw will terrible battery life claims do the trick..lol…

I had to laugh earlier, some tool on another blog seemed to be under the illusion that they could basically walk into an Apple store and swap their white iPhone 4 for a 4S … The punch line was that their iPhone 4 had no problems whatsoever, they just thought that Apple were going to upgrade white iPhone 4’s for the good of their health.

How can you make your iPhone 4 problematic?

    • throw it in the air and let it hit concrete a couple of times.

  • Went into the Apple Store today with my girlfriend to get her white iPhone 4 replaced. She’s been complaining about the power button not being responsive, which I found out is a common issue with the iPhone 4. They replaced it almost immediately, but unfortunately they had 2 white iPhone 4’s left. If only there was a way to check inventory before going in. Hah.

was her iphone 4 still under the 1 year warranty? my iphone 4 just started having this yellow ring tint on the right side of the screen but its been over a year since I’ve had the phone now. Should i bring it in the store to try and get a replacement?

      • Yes, she had about a month left on her warranty. I wouldn’t be surprised if you brought yours in and they replaced it for free. Try it. It couldn’t hurt.

I am considering going in with my white iphone 4 16gb (1 year warranty is up at end of month) I have an AT&T unlocked white iphone 4 currently with tmobile carrier with some probs (yeah right). My question is do you think Apple will unlock the 4S as well if they replace my 4? only other solution I can think of is get a Gevey for the 4S I have on 5.0.1 and use the new 4S with 5.1 with my current At&t plan, because I know they will update the new device before handing it over any thoughts?
