Isn’t it weird that the stock Messages app doesn’t automatically convert ASCII smiley faces into Emoji icons?

I never understood why Apple neglected to include this feature; I think they should have at least made it an option.

Thanks to the jailbreak community, now it is an option, and that option is called SMSmileys

SMSmileys is a tweak that’s simple and straightforward. When you install it, it will automatically convert all textual renditions of smiley characters into Emoji icons.

So, ‘;)’ will look like a real winky face, and ‘:D’ will genuinely look happy.

SMSmileys is a free download on Cydia’s BigBoss repo. Try it out for yourself and let us know what you think about it in the comments below.

  • BiteSMS has had that feature forever and I never use it. I prefer to see exactly what I’m doing and the other person is doing. If the other person is taking the time to use an emoji vs an emoticon, I wanna know it. And it got really annoying when it would try to change what it thought was an emoticon to an emoji when it was just normal characters close together. Or take the angry emoticon >:( and turn it into a sad face with a greater than sign coming out of his ear. >

    • if Apple does this, they’re gonna do it the right way. if ‘>:(‘ doesn’t translate as whole to an icon, then it won’t work.

And what happens if the person on the receiving end doesn’t have emoticons? Will they see the normal text?

    • iOS and OSX has emoji icons built in.
so as long as you send it to either one, they should see what you see.

    • It doesn’t replace your text with emoji, it only changes the way you see them, so the person you are sending a text to see’s it as you wrote it.

    Finally…!! I love it.
Hope there will be a tweak that wil work with app.

  • Ameer Naqvi

the person seeing the text wont see it as an emoticon

  • working only with imessage, not working with whatsapp

  • yes! finally!!! i’ve been waiting foe thisw kind of tweak!

This is presumably only useful if you’re texting to another iOS/OSX device? Does Android or any other OS’s support Emoji?

  • I used to do that using Xpander.. hehe

If non iOS devices can not view them, then it’s a waste of time imo. 🙁

  • no they’ll see a square symbol that looks like nothing.

  • Beto

Doesn’t work anymore with 6.1 :/ anything else that can?
