Yesterday, 9to5Mac reported that it had heard from reliable sources that Apple was on the verge of releasing a new Apple TV. The site claimed that there’s a good chance that we could see the product unveiled alongside the new iPad next week.

The report makes sense, considering the previous proof we’ve seen that an ATV refresh was on the way. But in case you needed any more convincing, AppleInsider has uncovered some new evidence…

“For three consecutive weeks, the Cupertino-based company has failed to make good on its promissory to restock indirect channel partners with fresh inventory of the existing $99 Apple TV product, say people familiar with matter.

Instead, partners and channel members have seen Apple push back deliveries each consecutive week by one additional week — a practice that almost always foreshadows a formal discontinuation of a product ahead of new models.”

The new Apple TV is expected to feature a new processor (possibly the A5 or the A5X) and Bluetooth 4.0 technology. The upgraded components would allow the device to stream 1080p content and play fullscreen HD games.

The jury is still out on Apple’s full-scale television set. It’s starting to seem more likely that we won’t see it until sometime next year. But don’t dismiss what the company is doing with its set top box. It still has to convince people that Apple belongs in the living room.

  • Can’t wait to see what it is! I would love a convergence of AppleTV 1 and 2. I’d love an updated ATV2 w/ a hard drive to store movies that I transfer to it.

    • Yea, I don’t want to use the Media Player from ATV Flash black all the time because it’s pretty slow :/. But a hard drive would be good! And really, who cares about such a small product? I would sacrifice the 4 cubic inches for a hard drive! But ya know what would be cool? A Blu-Ray player in the Apple TV! But I don’t think it’ll happen any time soon. I think they’ll just try to copy the Roku box. We’ll have to see!

  • So what can we expect to see on this new ATV? Just the new chip and Bluetooth? I’ll be honest I’m not that impressed… 🙁

    • Have you tried to play Real Racing 2 with AirPlay? It’s extremely laggy (for me atleast. It may also be my network, but I highly doubt it). So if it gets upgraded, it’ll be completely re-made for AirPlay. AirPlay still has a far way to go. And especially with Mountain Lion coming with AirPlay Mirroring, we’ll need an Apple TV refresh.

      • Trust me its your network this game runs so smooth on my Time Capsule. I also have ethernet going in the Apple TV 2.

  • Patrick Brusell

    I want the 1080P

  • I purchased one from Apple in Spain on the 15th Feb and it arrived within two days. I kind of new I should wait But went ahead anyhow. I love it but the 1080p would have been nice!!!!

    • Unless you have a big screen it isn’t noticeable, even then

  • They wouldn’t go backwards, the Majority didn’t like the syncing aspect
