A few weeks ago we brought you info on how to get the iOS 86 WinterBoard theme for the iPhone.

I think it’s safe to say that the reaction to the theme was mixed, but perhaps that may change once you see it in action.

iOS 86 brings you a cell shaded looking theme similar to the classic Dreamcast game Jet Set Radio. Be sure to check out our previous coverage on iOS 86 if you’re interested in trying it yourself.

I know sebestien is strongly against winter board are you too, Jeff?

I haven’t really done any themes because most require winter board and it seems like iDB treats winter board like a bad past relationship.

    • It’s not horrible on the iPhone 4S. On older devices there is a noticeable drop in performance in my opinion, especially on the 3GS or 3G. With the iPhone 4, iPad 2, and especially iPhone 4S, the drop is minimal at best.

      • The drop in slide transition smoothness, I think, is pretty noticeable

      • I’m not sure why homescreen transitions get laggy on some devices, but a workaround for now that some people have discovered is to install Barrel, oddly enough. Even in “normal (no effects)” mode, it makes scrolling through pages normally fast again.

Thanks for the info. Not sure if ‘not horrible’ is enough to convince me though.

is the fade in after the respring part of the theme?

    • Anonymous

Resprings aren’t that quick, so, no. It was just a cut in the video to reduce time.

  • It’s not “cell shaded” you goof. It’s meant to replicate the look of the old Macintosh computers and that has nothing to do with “cell shading” whatsoever. /facepalm

I believe you are looking for such phrases as “retro look” and “pixel based”

    Kids…pfft

    • I know it’s /not/ cell shaded, I was implying that it looks similar. If you can’t see the resemblance then I’m sorry, but I do. Obviously the intention was to go old school OS X with this theme. I was just trying to convey the look to readers and viewers. And hey, if 30’s a kid, then that’s fine by me 😛

  • George Villacres

Winterboard slows down my iPhone (n), but your iPhone has his normal speed. How?

  • Thanks for the video. Quick question though – there are several icons out there that do not install when the theme is selected. I’ve tried replacing the icons that didn’t change, as well as creating new directories in Bundles with the com.apple.appname to no avail. Any suggestions on howto rectify this? Thanks!

  • Theme looks awesome! Used springtomize 2 to make all the none themed icons grayscaled 🙂
